Sarawak In Need Of More Skilled Workforce To Drive Solar Industry

GENERAL SIBU, June 30 (Bernama) -- Sarawak must step up efforts to produce more skilled workers in solar energy in line with the state government's commitment to strengthening the renewable energy sector, said Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi. The Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister said the move was crucial to meet the growing demand for skilled manpower, in line with the state's target of increasing power generation capacity to 10,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and 15,000 MW by 2035. 'At least 60 per cent of this amount will be contributed by renewable sources, including solar energy,' he told reporters after witnessing the presentation of the Accreditation Certificate to Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) by the Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry (MUTS) here today. MUTS Electricity Supply director Muhammad Randi Abdullah presented the certificate to UTS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid. According to Julaihi, Sarawak had initiated the development of a floating solar power plant, including a 50 MW facility at the Batang Ai Dam, which began operations in December last year. 'This plant only utilises three per cent of the dam's surface and has the potential to be expanded to other locations such as Murum and Bakun. We have also identified several interested investors,' he said. Julaihi said that the demand for skilled technicians and engineers in solar photovoltaic (PV) system design and installation would continue to rise, describing the collaboration between UTS and Entera Technology Academy as a proactive and strategic initiative. 'Training skilled workers is essential to developing the entire renewable energy ecosystem across Sarawak,' he said. Julaihi said the initiative also supports the implementation of the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which positions renewable energy as a key sector in driving Sarawak towards becoming a high-income economy.

Sarawak's electricity capacity higher than current demand

KUCHING: Sarawak now has sufficient electricity generation capacity to meet domestic needs, including supply to rural areas, with a current total capacity of 5,898 Megawatts (MW), compared to the current demand of 4,887 MW. Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said this capacity enables Sarawak to plan energy generation strategically for the future, including targeting an electricity supply capacity of 10,000 MW by 2030 to meet a projected demand increase of 7,074 MW. 'By 2035, Sarawak has set a target of achieving a generation capacity of 15,000 MW through various energy sources, including renewable energy such as solar, cascading power sources and pumped hydro energy storage systems. 'As part of the efforts towards establishing the Borneo Power Grid (BPG) and the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), Sarawak is also intensifying cross-border energy exports to realise its vision as the Battery of ASEAN,' he said during the winding-up session for his ministry at the State Assembly (DUN) sitting here, today. Julaihi said that among the additional renewable energy potentials being considered are the development of large-scale solar farms and pumped hydro energy storage systems 'Several private companies have also submitted proposals for renewable energy generation projects, which are currently in the feasibility study stage at locations such as the Bengoh, Batang Ai, Bakun and Murum dams. 'For cascading energy sources, the ministry and Sarawak Energy have held 24 engagement sessions with the communities involved in the Sungai Gaat and Sungai Tutoh areas, including the implementation of the Muja Menua Ceremony in Sungai Gaat last April 4 as part of an inclusive approach with the local community,' he said. Julaihi said that date, Sarawak has exported around 100 MW of energy to West Kalimantan since 2016, while exports to Sabah are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025 with a total of between 30 and 50 MW. 'At the same time, plans are being made to export no less than 1,000 MW of energy to Peninsular Malaysia, up to 1,000 MW to Singapore and Brunei,' he said. The move, he said, is expected to strengthen Sarawak's position as a leader in sustainable energy in the region and support ASEAN's aspirations for a green and clean energy transition.

Sarawak's Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi confirmed that the grid project is nearing completion, with the final phase expected to be finished by the end of this year. 'We have signed a power exchange agreement with Sabah, and initially, we agreed to supply 30 MW of electricity, depending on the completion of the northern Sarawak grid. 'Once completed, we could increase the supply to 50 or 80 MW, depending on demand,' he noted. Julaihi was speaking to reporters after attending a memorandum of understanding signing ceremony between the Sabah Energy Commission and Sarawak's Utilities and Telecommunications Ministry, aimed at standardising the regulation of electrical equipment and gas appliances. He also explained that Sarawak intends to complete the Borneo Grid project before exploring the possibility of supplying electricity to the Philippines, a long-term plan that will require a feasibility study. Sarawak, he said, aims to become a key energy hub for Borneo, Malaysia and Southeast Asia in the future. On Feb 17, it was reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had asked Sarawak to supply its excess electricity to the southern Philippines via Sabah starting next year.
