
Ghosting and gaslighting could trigger depression and paranoia, study finds
Ghosting is the act of cutting off all contact, while gaslighting is a term used when someone is made to question their perception of reality.
The psychological effects and mental health toll of these actions in romantic relationships have now been studied by researchers at the University of Brighton and the University of Coimbra in Portugal.
Researchers surveyed 544 adults aged 18 to 40 in the UK, to explore how these subtle but damaging behaviours - such as suddenly cutting off all contact, manipulating someone to question their own reality, or attempting to control a partner's routine - are connected to mental health issues like depression and paranoid thinking.
'The digital age has provided enormous opportunity for social connections but also comes with some risks. Ghosting, in particular, is almost exclusively enacted in online settings,' Professor Rusi Jaspal, co-author and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Brighton, said.
'As the use of social media and dating apps grows, so too does the risk of encountering harmful behaviours like ghosting, which our research links to poorer mental health outcomes.'
The survey revealed there are clear links between these behaviours and poor mental health.
Researchers found ghosting and coercive control were both linked to increased feelings of paranoia. Similarly, gaslighting was linked to symptoms of depression.
Study authors accounted for people's age, income and personality traits like how sensitive they are to rejection and uncertainty - two traits researchers explain are also associated with poor mental health.
Younger people and those with lower incomes were particularly at risk of experiencing poor mental health as a result of gaslighting or ghosting.
Researchers suggested this added to the growing concern that dating app culture may be contributing to a mental health crisis.
The study highlights how romantic relationships, even those that do not involve physical violence, can still affect mental wellbeing.
Study authors concluded there is a need for effective psychological interventions that support victims of abusive relationship behaviours to cope with the 'distress' associated with gaslighting and ghosting. They hope that this could 'prevent the onset of depression and paranoid ideation'.
Researchers suggested cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) could help individuals manage the distress associated with experiences like ghosting or gaslighting, by building resilience, self-esteem and coping strategies.

Drinking just two shots of beetroot juice a day could help to lower blood pressure—a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. An intriguing new study found that people in their 70s who added the vibrant juice to their daily diet for a period of two weeks saw their originally high blood pressure drop to within the healthy range. The researchers, from the University of Exeter, also found that the nitrate-rich shots were beneficial for young people too, boosting levels of healthy bacteria in the mouth in under-30s. Speaking of the findings, study lead Professor Anni Vanhatalo urged older adults to incorporate more nitrate-rich vegetables into their diet—whether that's beetroot, spinach, rocket, celery or kale. 'We know that a nitrate-rich diet has health benefits and older people produce less of their own nitric oxide as they age. 'Encouraging older adults to consume more nitrate-rich vegetables could have significant long-term health benefits.' The researchers believe nitrate-rich vegetables like beetroot may help boost the levels of beneficial bacteria in the mouth and gut, which are thought to be helpful in clearing harmful cholesterol from the blood, lowering blood pressure. When nitrates enter the body they are converted into nitric oxide—a compound which can relax blood vessels, reducing the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that is essential for various bodily functions. An excess of 'bad' cholesterol—known as LDL—has long been linked with serious health problems including heart attacks and strokes. This is because LDL can form plaques that build up and block arteries, limiting the supply of blood to and from the heart. An estimated 6.3 million people in the UK are thought to suffer from the condition, which left untreated can increase the risk of heart disease. In the six-week study, nine adults in their 70s and nine young adults under 22 were analysed to see how introducing concentrated beetroot juice to their daily diets affected their health. Participants underwent two 10-day dietary supplementation periods where they were randomly assigned either beetroot shots or a placebo supplement. Blood samples and blood pressure was measured at the start of the study and on days eight to ten of each trial to track nitric oxide levels. On one of these days, researchers also assessed arterial stiffness, a key indicator of low nitric oxide levels. Saliva samples were also collected on each visit. At the end of the study, the older adults experienced a significant drop in blood pressure, but the same effect was not observed in the younger cohort. Drinking beetroot juice was also associated with a reduction of harmful bacteria, called prevotella, which have been linked with an increased risk of death in older people. Results also showed an increase of healthy bacteria belonging to Neisseria, which help to produce nitrites, boosting heart health. Dr Lee Beniston, from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, who was not involved in the current study, said the study opens up new opportunities for improving heart health through nutrition. He added: 'This research is a great example of how bioscience can help us better understand the complex links between diet, the microbiome and healthy ageing.' An estimated 270 people are admitted to hospital with a heart attack each day in the UK according to the British Heart Foundation. About 175,000 Britons die from heart and circulatory diseases each year in the UK, equivalent to 480 per day and more than the city of Oxford. It comes as promising new research has suggested that the nutrient packed shot could help reduce dementia risk, by boosting blood supply to the brain. Researchers also from the University of Exeter, found that adults with 'healthy brain function' had higher levels of the ion nitrite in their mouths. Bacteria in the mouth convert nitrates into nitrites — meaning nitrate-rich beetroot could help raise levels of nitrites. Research has also previously suggested beetroot can both lower blood pressure and even inhibit certain chemical reactions in the brain that are involved in the progression of Alzheimer's disease.

Dietitian warns against eating this fruit in the morning
By A food expert has ranked Britons' favourite fruits based upon their nutritional value—and the ones you'd typically have for breakfast haven't fared too strongly. Nichola Ludlam-Raine, a registered dietitian and the author of How Not to Eat Ultra-Processed, was asked to assess eighteen of Britain's best-loved fruits—from grapes to oranges, strawberries to pineapple—and give them a nutritional value out of five. Ms Ludlam-Raine made her ratings based on what vitamins and minerals each fruit naturally contains, how much fibre it has, and its natural sugar levels. Speaking to The Telegraph, she said: 'Fruit does contain carbohydrates, mainly in the form of natural sugars like fructose, along with fibre. 'The fibre slows down digestion and helps prevent spikes in blood sugar,' she explains. 'However, people with diabetes or insulin resistance may need to be mindful of portion sizes [eating a handful or 80g as a serving]. Whole fruit is not the same as added sugar and is a healthy part of a balanced diet.' Ms Ludlam-Raine then shared the best fruits to enjoy regularly, and named the ones which should be seen more as a treat due to their high sugar content, rather than a daily staple. And it's bad news for people who like to start their day with a platter of tropical fruit, or enjoy a pot of supermarket fruit salad stirred in to their yogurt, or mix chopped banana in to their porridge. Coming in last with a score of just 1 out of 5 was melon, with all varieties— watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and galia—languishing at the bottom of the list. Melons are mostly made up of water, are packed with vitamin C, and in some varieties, vitamin A. However, they are as low in calories as they are in overall nutritional value. Ms Ludlam-Raine said: 'Melon is low in fibre and overall nutrients compared with other fruits', adding that they contain a ' moderate amount of natural sugar'. Second from bottom on the list was pineapple, which scored 2 out of 5. This was because it is high in natural sugars, and it's acidic juices can cause irritation to gums. 'Pineapple is rich in vitamin C and contains bromelain, an enzyme that may aid digestion and reduce inflammation,' Ms Ludlam-Raine explained, adding that the spiky yellow fruit is also rich in manganese, 'which supports metabolism and antioxidant function.' Scoring 3 out of 5, and tying with grapes, were bananas, a go-to breakfast choice of millions of people across the world. Ms Ludlam-Raine said the fruits, which are so rich in natural sugar they were once described as 'Mars bars in yellow skin' do still have lots of health benefits, however. She said: 'They are a good source of potassium, vitamin B6 and energy and support heart health.' So what fruits should you be piling high on your plate? The dietician placed oranges, kiwis and berries at the top of her list, giving the colourful, anti-oxidant rich choices 5 out of 5. In the middle, with 4 out of 5 stars, were pears, apples, grapefruits and mangoes. Berries have long been heralded as a super food. Earlier this year, Dr Nadeem—a healthcare professional at Wellness Drip—told You Magazine that by upping our intake of three vitamin C rich foods, we could cut the amount of sick days we take per year in half. These are oranges, kiwis and strawberries, which were all hovering around the top of Ms Ludlam-Raine's chart.

Graham Thorpe asked his wife to help him end his life after his mental health 'spiralled' following Covid lockdowns and being sacked from his England coaching job, inquest hears
England cricket legend Graham Thorpe's mental health was 'spiralling down' after a combination of Covid lockdowns and being sacked from the English Cricket Board (ECB), his heartbroken widow said today. Amanda Thorpe described how the Surrey lefthander begged her to help him to die as he struggled to cope with anxiety and depression. He attempted to take his own life in a hotel in 2022, after losing his coaching job with the ECB after a video involving the England Ashes players on tour in Australia – which Thorpe filmed – was leaked. The former Surrey lefthander, who dazzled with the bat during a glittering career for club and country, was killed when he was struck by a train near his home on August 4 last year. He was 55 years old. Mrs Thorpe told her husband's inquest in Woking: 'He asked me to help him end his life. 'He said he wants to go to Switzerland. I was in turmoil. 'Then we get a letter for an appointment (with the medical team) in a month's time. 'How ill do you have to be?' Thorpe's wife, his father Geoff, and brothers Alan and Ian were all present for the hearing. Addressing them, assistant coroner Jonathan Stevens said: 'I appreciate this is an incredibly difficult time for you as a family.' The coroner, referring to Mrs Thorpe's witness statement, described how 'up until the time of Covid there were no psychological issues'. He said: 'You explain Graham found lockdown and Covid very difficult, very stressful for him.' Mrs Thorpe said: 'Up until 2020, no there wasnt anything in particular. 'Maybe in 2018 he had a bout of depression but he got through that, it didn't affect his job.' Thorpe's father Geoff, 83, agreed, adding: 'Everything was fine until Covid.' He told the inquest: 'What you've got to realise is sometimes us chaps are a little bit macho – we can cope. 'In fact, we can't.' Referring to the Covid restrictions, he said: 'He's not a fella who likes to be couped up.' Mr Thorpe senior described how his son's 'life came crashing down' when he lost his job with the ECB. The coroner described how Thorpe 'had his ups and downs with stress and anxiety' in 2021, but then there was the prospect of the Ashes tour in 2021/2 where the Covid restrictions in Australia were much stricter than in the UK. Referring to Mrs Thorpe's statement, he said: 'You say the environment of Covid was not good for him, would make his psychological condition worse. 'You mention on that Tour there was an incident involving a video that was taken that drew a lot of adverse publicity. 'You make the observation that he shouldn't have been allowed to go to Australia, and it was inevitable there was going to be a deterioration in his mental health.' Mrs Thorpe said: 'Thinking about it, because he went on that Tour, he was dismissed. 'If he hadn't been on that Tour, then he wouldn't be dismissed and that was ultimately what he couldn't deal with.' The coroner said Thorpe tried to take his own life with a cocktail of medication and alcohol in the middle of 2022. He said: 'Things continued to go downhill, he was really struggling, had anxiety and insomnia and it was all really dark.' Thorpe spent three weeks unconscious in hospital after the suicide attempt. He suffered a stroke, and was in intensive care for five weeks. He went to a private hospital, paid for by the ECB, but his mental health did not improve. He was offered a coaching role with the Afghanistan national team but could not go because of his mental health issues. Mrs Thorpe told the inquest: 'He tried to do it but he was spiralling down. 'He signed a contract and I had to tell them he was too unwell to do that job.' Thorpe tried various types of therapy including electro-compulsive therapy, but that 'didn't seem to work', the inquest heard. He made repeated threats to kill himself, including throwing himself in front of a train, his father said. Mrs Thorpe said: 'He told me he was scared, and I told him I was scared too because I didn't know how to help him.' By June 2024, Thorpe 'had no interest in food, he wanted to hide away, totally isolated, in real crisis and despair', the inquest heard. The coroner described how Thorpe left the family home on the morning of August 4 2024 and was not seen alive again. Referring to Mrs Thorpe's witness statement, he said: 'You had been upstairs on the phone and Graham had gone out. 'You thought he had gone to walk the dog but then you saw the dog. 'You tried to locate him using your phone but weren't able to do that. 'Then you got a call from Geoff telling you: he's gone.' Mrs Thorpe said: 'He never really recovered from (his first suicide) attempt. 'He came back from the tour of Australia in a terrible state - lots of things, the video, the environment, the set-up. 'To be sacked after that I think it was foreseeable that it would be really really hard on him. 'The weeks leading up to his death, he told me he doesn't want to be here any more. 'He asked me to help him end his life. 'He said he wants to go to Switzerland. I was in turmoil. 'Then we get a letter for an appointment (with the medical team) in a month's time. 'How ill do you have to be? I just wish he could have been kept safe. If you're not here, there's no hope.' The father-of-four was considered a talisman for England, and was a veteran of 100 Test matches between 1993 and 2005. But he also spent years battling anxiety and depression, and believed his wife Amanda and children Henry, Amelia, Kitty and Emma were better off without him. Thorpe was born in Farnham, Surrey, and showed early promise as a footballer - even being offered trials at Brentford - but was already involved in the under-11s set-up at his home county cricket club. He did not look back. Thorpe would go on to become one of the most revered batsmen of his generation, a rare bright spark in an England team which often failed to deliver. His swashbuckling style and distinctive headband made him popular with fans new and old. And he set records along the way - becoming the first England batter for 20 years to score 100 runs on his Test debut, doing so against a Shane Warne-inspired Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottinghamshire in 1993. He would become only the eight man to reach 100 Test caps for England, scoring 6,744 runs at an average of 44.66. But he was also plagued by demons. In 2002, the year he scored the third fastest double-century in Test history, Thorpe took a 12-month break from cricket as he left a tour of India amid turmoil in his first marriage due to his cheating that led to a bitter divorce and a battle with suicidal depression and alcoholism. Thorpe admitted later after he flew back from touring India to try to save his first marriage: 'There came a time when I would have given back all my Test runs and Test caps just to be happy again.' Mrs Thorpe said in an interview after his death that despite having a wife and children whom he loved and who loved him, 'he did not get better'. His wife said: 'He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.' Thorpe will be honoured during the final Test match against India at The Oval next month to raise awareness of mental health. Day two of the fifth Test will be called 'A Day for Thorpey' in support of charity Mind. It falls on August 1, which would have been Thorpe's 56th birthday. Thorpe's inquest is due to last until Friday.
