Hamas, Islamic Jihad demand full 'Israeli' withdrawal in any Gaza ceasefire deal

Roya News2 days ago
Hamas and Islamic Jihad said Sunday that any negotiations to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip must result in a complete end to the war, the full withdrawal of 'Israeli' forces, the reopening of border crossings, and the start of reconstruction efforts.
In a joint statement, Hamas said a delegation led by Mohamed Darwish, head of the movement's leadership council, met with Islamic Jihad Secretary-General Ziyad al-Nakhalah to discuss the latest 'Israeli' responses to proposals put forward by mediators and how to respond to them.
The statement reaffirmed the two factions' unified position that any agreement must end the ongoing war and address the humanitarian and political consequences of 'Israel's' continued assault on the enclave.
Earlier Sunday, 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to criticism over the captives deal negotiations. In comments to Israeli media, Netanyahu denied claims that his government rejected a proposed agreement, saying, 'They [the media] always echo Hamas propaganda, and they are always wrong. We accepted the deal—the one from US envoy Steve Witkoff, and then the revised version proposed by the mediators. We accepted it. Hamas rejected it.'
Netanyahu claimed Hamas's goal is to stay in Gaza and wait for 'Israeli' forces to withdraw so it can rearm and launch further attacks. 'I will not accept this,' he said. 'I'm doing everything I can to bring our hostages home. I meet with their families, I know their pain and suffering, and I'm determined to bring them back and eliminate Hamas.'

Unearthed 2014 article shows Zohran Mamdani's early advocacy for Palestinian rights

A resurfaced college article has shed light on Zohran Mamdani's long-standing support for the Palestinian cause, years before he became a leading figure in New York politics. Mamdani, now 33 and the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor, co-authored the piece as an undergraduate at Bowdoin College, where he co-founded the school's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). Published on January 10, 2014, in Bowdoin's student paper, The Bowdoin Orient, Mamdani's article strongly endorsed the American Studies Association's (ASA) decision to join the academic boycott of 'Israeli' institutions, a move aimed at pressuring 'Israel' to end its occupation of Palestinian territories. 'The American Studies Association, a group of scholars on American culture and history, recently decided to honor the call of Palestinian civil society to boycott Israeli institutions,' Mamdani wrote. 'This academic and cultural boycott aims to bring under scrutiny the actions of the Israeli government and to put pressure on Israeli institutions to end the oppressive occupation and racist policies within both Israel and occupied Palestine.' The piece criticized 'Israeli' universities for what Mamdani described as active and passive complicity in 'Israel's' military occupation. He accused them of prioritizing soldiers in admissions, discriminating against Palestinian students, developing remote-controlled bulldozers for home demolitions, and conducting research for the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), with some institutions operating from illegal settlements built on occupied land. Mamdani rejected claims that the boycott stifled free speech, arguing instead that it had sparked wider debate about 'Israeli' human rights abuses. He specifically challenged then-Bowdoin College President Barry Mills, who opposed the boycott, accusing him of ignoring Palestinian suffering: 'Mills regrettably makes no mention of Palestinians or Palestine… When Mills speaks of the 'free exchange of knowledge, ideas, and research,' he does so while privileging partnerships with Israeli institutions over basic freedoms for Palestinians, including the rights to food, water, shelter and education.' The mayoral nominee praised Bowdoin professors who supported the ASA resolution and urged students and faculty to sign a pro-boycott petition.

Syria condemns 'Israeli' strikes on Suwayda, vows to defend its sovereignty

Syria's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday strongly condemned what it called a 'treacherous Israeli aggression' following a series of coordinated airstrikes and attacks on southern Syrian territory, accusing 'Israel' of deliberately escalating tensions in the region and pledging to defend the country through all legal means. In an official statement, the ministry said the strikes had resulted in the deaths of both military personnel and civilians. 'This aggression represents a new escalation, carried out through deliberate air raids and coordinated attacks on Syrian land,' the ministry said, calling it part of a continued pattern of 'Israeli' violations of Syrian sovereignty. 'The attacks occurred at a calculated time and within a suspicious context aimed at undermining Syria's national stability and increasing tensions in the region,' the statement added. The Foreign Ministry stressed that Syria reserves its full right to defend its land and people, affirming that it will use all tools guaranteed by international law to confront aggression and protect national security. It also reaffirmed the government's commitment to safeguarding all Syrians, including members of the Druze community, who it said are now facing direct threats as a result of 'Israeli' attacks. The strikes come amid ongoing violence in the southern governorate of Suwayda, home to Syria's Druze minority, where deadly clashes between Druze fighters and Bedouin tribes erupted over the weekend. On Tuesday, Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra announced a complete ceasefire in the city following talks with local leaders. Government forces had entered Suwayda earlier in the day and raised the Syrian flag at key checkpoints. Shortly afterward, 'Israel' announced that its military had begun striking Syrian regime positions in the Suwayda region, citing the need to protect the Druze minority and ensure the demilitarization of the border zone. In a joint statement, 'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the strikes targeted forces and weapons 'brought into Suwayda to carry out operations against the Druze.' 'We are acting to prevent the Syrian regime from harming them,' the statement read. The 'Israeli' military claimed it struck several vehicles in the area, and Syrian state media confirmed the attacks. The Syrian government, however, rejected 'Israel's' stated justification. The Foreign Ministry's statement denounced the attempt to use the Druze as a pretext for foreign interference and stressed Damascus' commitment to protecting all of its citizens. The recent clashes in Suwayda have left more than 100 people dead, including Druze fighters, civilians, and members of the Bedouin community, according to war monitors and Syrian officials. Government forces were deployed to restore order but quickly became entangled in the fighting.

'Israel': We are working to return Druze who crossed into Syria from Golan Heights

The Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) announced on Tuesday that dozens of Druze crossed the border fence into Syrian territory near the Majdal Shams area in the occupied Golan Heights. לפני זמן קצר, עשרות אזרחים ישראלים חצו את גדר הגבול לתוך שטח סוריה במרחב מג׳דל שמס. — צבא ההגנה לישראל (@idfonline) July 15, 2025 The IOF stated that it is currently working to return those who crossed the border safely, though no details were provided on the circumstances of the crossing or whether arrests would be made. The incident comes amid heightened tensions in southern Syria following 'Israeli' airstrikes on Suwayda province. A source in Tel Aviv, speaking to local media, confirmed that the strikes were carried out in full coordination with the United States.
