Broadway Sees Highest Grossing Season on Record
The gross totals are up 23 percent from last season, and, significantly, the numbers also come in above Broadway's 2018-2019 season, which had held the record for $1.83 billion in gross revenue and had been the benchmark against which Broadway was measuring its post-pandemic recovery. Broadway first overtook the 2018-2019 season grosses in early May.

In the prior two seasons, Broadway grossed $1.54 billion and $1.58 billion respectively. The 2019-2020 and 2021-2022 seasons were both shortened due to the pandemic. The 2024-2025 season began May 20, 2024 and ended May 25, 2025.
Attendance for the 2024-2025 season came in at 14.66 million, below the 14.77 million from the 2018-2019 season, suggesting that increased ticket prices played a part in the higher grosses this past season. Average ticket prices were up 3 percent from last season and up 4 percent from the 2018-2019 season. While Broadway League president Jason Laks celebrated the grosses achievement, he also underlined the trend.
'As we look to next season, we have to be sober about the challenges Broadway faces. We can't be satisfied with 2019's definition of success anymore. With rising costs hitting every facet of production, it is becoming harder and harder to bring live theatre to the stage. Shows today have an ever-shorter window to get on their feet. The investment that fuels Broadway is something we can't ever take for granted,' Laks said in a statement.
Among the high earners this season, Good Night, and Good Luck yet again broke its own record for highest weekly gross for a play on Broadway, bringing in $4.2 million last week and playing to more than 100 percent capacity at the Winter Garden Theater. The average ticket price for the play was $337.59. The play is currently scheduled to end its run June 8.
The next highest earners last week were Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, with $3.3 million and the highest average ticket price of $398, and Glengarry Glen Ross, starring Kieran Culkin, Bob Odenkirk and Bill Burr, which earned $2.7 million across a nine-performance week. Wicked and The Lion King rounded out the top five, with $2.3 million and $2 million respectively.
Overall, Broadway grosses were up 7 percent over the prior week, as the industry races toward the June 9 Tony Awards ceremony and as many shows, including several best musical nominees Death Becomes Her (up $229,324) Maybe Happy Ending (up $87,044), Dead Outlaw (up $62,530) and more saw boosts in their grosses over the prior week.
Call Me Izzy, a one-woman show starring Jean Smart, also joined the boards last week, playing two previews at Studio 54 and playing to 94 percent capacity.

Drinking Tequila And Tuscan Wine With Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas Courtesy of Nick Jonas Nick Jonas rose to fame with his siblings in the Jonas Brothers, but has since carved out an impressive solo and acting career, recently ending a Broadway run of ' The Last Five Years .' Along with his demanding performance schedule Jonas has also been managing Type 1 diabetes, founding his own organization Beyond Type One to raise awareness and funds for research and working with Dexcom (a glucose monitoring system) to inspire other young performers to continue their own dreams while living with diabetes. I spoke with Jonas about the his favorite drinks, his best moments from the show and the upcoming reunion tour with his brothers. What are your favorite wines and spirits? I'm a big fan of tequila, that's always been my go-to. I've had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about the process of making tequila over the years and it's just made me more and more of a fan of it. We also love a great bottle of wine in our house. I'm a big fan of California cabs and French Bordeaux. And you can't go wrong with an Aperol Spritz. What's your favorite way of enjoying tequila? My friends and I have a simple cocktail that we drink called the 'Especial.' It's basically just tequila on the rocks with soda water and an orange wedge. And it is quite deliciously refreshing. My most recent trip to Barcelona (on tour with the Jonas Brothers) was incredible. I tried an oxtail paella that was pretty exceptional. My brother Joe is always in charge of picking the restaurants. And then, of course, Tuscany. The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is one of our favorite places to visit. A wine/food day in Italy is always amazing. You just wrapped up performing on Broadway in 'The Last Five Years.' What drew you to the show? It's a score that I've loved for a long time. And to be able to be in the first ever Broadway production of the show was a dream come true. I was first introduced to the music back in 2002 when I was in 'Beauty and the Beast' on Broadway. All my adult cast mates were were obsessed — I didn't fully understand all the themes — but I got to know it better as I got older. You're a strong advocate for people managing diabetes and recently hosted a group of performers backstage at the show. What advice did you give them? For any person living with diabetes, the challenge is how many more decisions you have to make daily and having the information to make those decisions. That includes the rest you get and keeping tracking of your glucose. And beyond the numbers it's about tracking your time and understanding your trends so you can give your best performance each night. The group that I met was amazing. I work with Dexcom to do advocacy work and empower others who are living with this disease to share their stories and make that web of connection just that much greater. We talked after the show and I answered their questions about what my experience has been living with type 1, and what things to expect and prepare themselves for as they step into careers in the entertainment industry. Nick Jonas meets with young performers managing diabetes. Carrington Spires What were your favorite moments in 'The Last Five Years?' One of my favorite songs of all time is the opening song from the show, 'Still Hurting.' It's Adrienne Warren's song, but it's just beautiful. Hearing that every night on the Broadway stage is kind of magical. My favorite song to sing is 'Nobody Needs to Know.' It's my character's last song and just a beautiful ballad. Heartbreaking and really personifies the feeling that you've made decisions that are going to complicate your life. And Jason Robert Brown's writing is really exceptional. I was honored to get to be a part of it. Who are some of your own idols you've gotten to have drinks and dinner with? Tiger Woods. I was able to play a few holes alongside him at a celebrity invitational some years ago. Tiger and Freddie Couples each had a team, and as an avid golfer growing up it was pretty magical to walk alongside the and hear their stories. Our family has gotten to know Jim Nantz quite well over the years as well. I had the chance to see him a few times at Augusta during The Masters — and he's brought his daughter to shows of ours over the years. What is your favorite guitar that you own? I've got a Gibson B-25 Natural acoustic that my wife got me. It's from 1964 or so — the shop didn't know the exact date. Then there's a beautiful green Gibson SG that I found at Mike's Music in Cincinnati. It's got this beautiful look to it and the sound is is unlike any Gibson SG I've ever played. It's really full and robust, but I can also play things that are more nuanced — sort of in The Edge from U2 space — which is really fun. I've got a movie coming out with Paul Rudd called 'Power Ballads.' And my brothers and I shot a holiday movie for Disney+ that comes later this year for the holiday season. So after I finish 'The Last Five Years' I'm looking forward to some downtime with my family and some resting and recharging. And then it's right back to work. Toddler Mom Says She Struggles With Pretend Play—Here's Why She's Not Alone
"I love playing pretend school, stuffed animal zoo, police chase, dolly daycare (fill in the blank) with my kids every day, all the time," said no parent ever. Because, shockingly, sometimes we have things to do other than roar like a dino for seven hours straight. It's well known that being a mom of a toddler can be exhausting, there's a million things to remember from keeping them safe, well-fed, and (of course) entertained. With all the pressure, it's normal to feel like your thoughts are scattered when trying to focus. For one toddler mom the pressure of having to make up scenarios during playtime left her feeling frustrated. She turned to Reddit to explain how she struggles to play with her toddler, saying that while her husband is great at playing with their child, she forgot how to. In her post, mom explains that her daughter waits for her to come up with scenarios and often times she can't conjure anything up. "I was so good at this as a kid but my mind like shoes away from it now as an adult," she writes. Now, she says she no longer looks forward to her daughter asking to play together. "I hate feeling like I have no idea what to do and I am just disappointing her." When it comes to my own kids, I can relate to feeling like I'm disappointing them during playtime. It seems I'm never quite doing it right when it comes to imagining how a My Little Pony restaurant might function. Go figure! Thankfully, some parents on the Reddit thread are right there with us who have had enough of pretending the floor is lava. First, all hail a Reddit parent who bravely confessed, "I'm the same way. I really struggle with imaginary play with my kids. It's not fun for me at all, and I just find it mentally exhausting." But some parents believe that it doesn't require much effort to pretend play, they say that the real issue is the mom's inability to connect with her inner child and tap into a sense of whimsy. While how seriously your child takes pretend play depends on them, it's also OK to not force yourself to dream up scenarios that please your child. Independent play offers many benefits to children, so stop beating yourself up if you find yourself longing to exit the sofa bus. For many parents, with pretend play comes a lot of pressure to remember details. While most of us love how creative our kids are, it's exhausting having to remember all the rules of their pretend world. Moreover, some toddlers can also be quite bossy and demand that pretend play reaches their standards of entertainment and originality, instructing parents on the intricacies of the backstory and dialogue. In another Reddit thread about hating pretend play, one parent wrote, "My daughter used to get mad at me for not saying my lines right. You know, the lines she never gave me. It was always like walking on stage for a Broadway play on opening night without ever having seen the script." Although many parents admitted to being so over the bossiness, others voiced what so many of us feel when we become disengaged from fairy hair salon or T-Rex swim lessons: The guilt can be tough. Are we really in the wrong when a tea party with a toddler leaves us near tears (of boredom)? No. In fact, experts say that a kiddo playing alone is beneficial for their development. "Sometimes it's good for children to play alone or independently because they can be more creative when they are playing by themselves," child development expert Ferdousi Khanom told UNICEF. Another advantage of independent play is a child being able to sharpen their problem-solving skills. Nancy Olsen-Harbich, the Program Director and a Human Development Specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County's Family Health and Wellness Program, shared in a blog post that solitary play also helps kids learn to take initiative and build their self-esteem, because, hey, now they know they don't need a caregiver to pull off an impressive kitchen chair train. Bottom line: Pretend play is a challenge for many caregivers. If you're pretty sure your imagination died along with your ability to stay up past 9 p.m., don't chalk that feeling up to being the worst parent ever. Instead, know you are far from alone (mom over here who just totally screwed up my son's reenactment of The Little Mermaid because I couldn't get the mermaid tail on right). And, the next time you'd rather run out the door than pretend to "be the mommy velociraptor," remind yourself it's OK to say "no". The Picture of Dorian Gray has officially recouped its investment, producers announced. The play starring Succession's Sarah Snook in a solo performance was reportedly capitalized at more than $8 million. Producers have not confirmed the capitalization amount.
