NEW DELHI: Even as the India-US relationship comes under strain because of President Donald Trump's trade weaponisation, the Indian govt reposed hope in bilateral ties, with the ministry of external affairs (MEA) saying on Friday that the partnership has weathered several transitions and challenges, and that India is confident the relationship will continue to move forward. At the same time, the govt underlined the significance of the relationship with Russia calling it steady and time-tested. On crude imports from Russia, govt reiterated India's position that it's guided by what is on offer in the markets, and by the prevailing global circumstances, in securing its energy needs. On defence procurements, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said sourcing of India's defence requirements is determined solely by its national security imperatives and strategic assessments. On defence cooperation, Jaiswal said India has a strong defence partnership with the US that has been strengthening over the past several years. There is potential for this partnership to grow further under the India-US COMPACT for the 21st century. In Feb this year, Trump and PM Modi launched a new initiative — the 'US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century' — to drive 'transformative change' across key pillars of cooperation. Asked about ties with Russia, the official said India's bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country. Sugar export quota of 5,841 tonne for EU
India on Friday notified sugar exports of 5,841 tonnes to the EU under the tariff-rate quota scheme for 2025-26. "The quantity of 5,841 mt sugar to be exported to the EU from India under TRQ for the year 2025-26 (October 2025 to September 2026) has been notified," the Director General of Foreign Trade said in a public notice. It said a Certificate of Origin, if required, for preferential export of sugar to the EU, shall be issued by the Additional DGFT, Mumbai, on recommendation of APEDA regarding the entity and quantity for which it is eligible. Threats to India have exposed US as unreliable partner: Russia
NEW DELHI: The West is undermining its relations with India by issuing threats and sanctions connected to New Delhi's relationship with Moscow, Russian ambassador to India Denis Alipov said, according to Russia's RT news network. The ambassador said that US and EU with their sanction threats had exposed themselves as unreliable actors. "Through these threats and measures, the West is planting a time bomb under its own relations with India, deliberately demonstrating its unreliability... The threats coming from US certainly do not inspire trust... They only further highlight the unreliability of US as a partner," he said. According to the report, Alipov said Moscow has never built its ties with New Delhi at the expense of others, while Washington, in pursuit of its own economic gains, is undermining not only Russia's interests but also those of India. "No one considers these actions legitimate, and they're being roundly condemned," Alipov said, adding that India's energy security will drive its foreign policy decisions.
