Simone Biles Accepts TIME100 Impact Award at 2025 TIME100 Gala
TIME100 Impact Awards recognize global leaders who have gone above and beyond to move their industries—and the world—forward.
Biles attended the star-studded ceremony with her mother. Actor Kristen Bell, who is 5'1, jokingly explained why she was presenting an award to Biles, who is 4'8: 'I wanted to give her this award tonight because for once, I wanted to tower over someone while also feeling super weak.' Biles boasts 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals.
But on a more serious note, Bell said Biles deserves the award because she doesn't just rest on her laurels. 'She continues to use her achievements and her example to lift others up.'
Practices can be stressful, but Biles tries to make them fun. She spoke about being true to herself. As she explained onstage, 'I was expected to be robotic and compartmentalize my feelings in order to achieve what might otherwise be an overwhelming goal. But that just wasn't me. I needed to smile, to laugh, to occasionally play practical jokes. I found ways to keep competition and training environments polite and fun, and it allowed me to succeed.'
In addition to her balancing acts in the gymnasium, Biles speaks openly about the need for balance in life. She made a historic comeback this summer, racking up four medals (three of them gold) in the 2024 Paris summer Olympics after withdrawing from the Tokyo games in 2021 to preserve her mental health. Her recovery is documented in the Netflix series Simone Biles Rising.
In a tribute to Biles for the 2025 TIME100 list, Aly Raisman, three-time Olympic gold gymnast, called her fellow Olympian both 'deeply human and undeniably superhuman,' so much so that 'my teammates and I used to joke that we were all competing for second place.'
But at the gala, Biles said you don't need medals to have confidence or make a difference. As she put it, 'You don't need to stand on an Olympic stage in order to have an impact, and you certainly don't need to win medals. You just need to show up and stay true to who you are.'
Past TIME100 Impact Award recipients include Steven Spielberg and Michael J. Fox.

Luke Bryan Speaks on Whether He and Carrie Underwood Will Return to ‘American Idol'
American Idol will return for its 24th season in 2026, but Luke Bryan isn't sure if he'll be along for the ride. The country music star recently spoke with Taste of Country Nights, where he opened up about the future of Idol and whether he and his fellow judge Carrie Underwood will be back next season. Underwood joined Bryan and Lionel Richie for Season 23, replacing Katy Perry. '[She] really enjoyed it,' Bryan said of Underwood's first season as a judge. 'I know she had a great time in the role.' As for whether that means she will be back for another go-around next year, Bryan shared, 'My prediction would be highly favorable.' However, when it comes to his own future with the show, the 'Buy Dirt' singer was more apprehensive. 'Idol is kind of a year-by-year, 'Do we do it or not?'' he stated. Bryan and Richie joined the ABC singing competition series in 2018 and have completed eight seasons behind the table. They served alongside Perry for Seasons 16 to 22 before Underwood joined the panel earlier this year. Lionel Richie, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan; Disney/Eric McCandless Despite his apprehension over returning, Bryan emphasized that he loves the show and had a great time on Season 23. 'Last year was really, really incredible with Carrie and Lionel and Ryan [Seacrest],' he said. 'And the main thing is just, have fun with American Idol and have fun with the kids [contestants].' As for his future, he simply added, 'We'll see what happens.' Bryan has spoken in the past about how he and Richie are on one-year contracts that are re-upped ahead of the new season. He admitted that Disney, ABC's parent company, are often 'tightlipped' about its decisions, so he often doesn't know until late-on whether or not he'll be back. In July 2024, ahead of Season 23, he told Billboard, 'We currently haven't heard what the story is on who's coming back, and if Lionel and I are coming back. I think Disney is just trying to figure out what they want to do and we're just kind of sitting back and waiting until they decide.' Would you like to see Bryan back for another season of Idol? Or should the show change up its judging panel? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. Solve the daily Crossword

The dream lives on for Australian swim champ
Cam McEvoy, now an Olympic and world champion, doesn't know when he'll swim again. "But I'm not stopping," McEvoy said. "Imagine telling myself in 2022 this is where I'd be - you couldn't write a script like that. "The dream lives on, right? My story just goes for a while." McEvoy almost quit the sport in 2022. After much soul-searching he continued, vowed to do things his way, and created his own revolutionary training regime. Now, he's the Olympic and world champion in the 50m freestyle. In Singapore on Saturday night, the 31-year-old became Australia's oldest gold medallist at a world championships - three weeks after becoming a dad for the first time. "Shoutout to (wife) Maddi at home, I couldn't be here without her; shoutout to Hartley, my three-week-old son," he said. "I'm going straight to the newborn trenches. "I'll start to do the night routines, help Maddi, and just enjoy the bubble, really. "It sounds cliche, but win or lose, I'm going home a winner. "It has given me a new light on the sport, on life, something new to navigate. "And I'll see where it takes me in the future." McEvoy's latest success came as Kaylee McKeown captured another gold on Saturday night, in the women's 200m backstroke. McKeown has now completed 100-200 backstroke golden doubles at her past two world championships, and also at last year's Olympics. "I wasn't feeling too great heading in, a bit of illness and stuff going around, dealing with a bit of a shoulder (injury)," said McKeown, who dislocated a shoulder leading into the titles. "I dug really deep." Australia's Lani Pallister (women's 800m freestyle) and Alexandria Perkins (women's 50m butterfly) also collected silver on Saturday night. Australia, with seven gold, four silver and six bronze medals, enter Sunday's final night of competition behind only the United States (seven, 11, seven) on the medal tally.
