US travel advisory linking Meghalaya with terrorism and violence not correct: CM
The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to terrorism and violence.

Shillong, Jun 24 (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday asserted that the travel advisory issued by the United States linking the state and the northeastern region with terrorism and violence is incorrect, and he would take up the matter with the US Ambassador to India.
Permission is not required if employees are travelling only to the capital cities of these states, it said.
'The US Embassy has given a completely wrong status to Meghalaya and the North East as a whole. I do not think the notification is correct,' Sangma told PTI.
The chief minister said he would be meeting the US Ambassador to India in this regard.
'I will be presenting facts and figures to the US Ambassador as well as to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs,' he said.
Responding to the advisory, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said, 'It's unfortunate that the US has issued such an advisory. We don't know where they collect their information from to place Meghalaya in that category.' Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio, defended the state's record on safety and hospitality.
'Meghalaya is one of the safest places in the world, and people of the state are known for their hospitality,' he told PTI.
Tynsong said people who have not visited Meghalaya and met the people may have all sorts of doubts.
'Talk to those who have visited Meghalaya and met the hardworking people living in the beautiful villages of the state. These are the real ambassadors,' he said.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state is expected to host 20 lakh visitors this year, and the tourism department has charted a calendar of events for the entire year, with events like the Cherry Blossom Festivals.
The state government has also initiated a programme to induct 'Tourist Buddies' who will assist travellers at major locations.
'The state is recruiting 50 Tourist Buddies in the state capital itself, where they will be stationed at key tourist locations such as Wards Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad,' Lyngdoh said.
A senior tourism officer told PTI that the state government plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore to boost the tourism sector.
He said the sector provides employment to over 50,000 people directly and indirectly and is one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government which employs over 85,000 people. PTI JOP MNB NN

Several feared dead and missing after cloudburst in Uttarkashi; CM Dhami says rescue ops underway

The incident occurred near an under-construction hotel in the Silai area along the Yamunotri National Highway, washing away a labourers' campsite where 29 workers had taken shelter. While 20 people were rescued, nine were reported missing. Later, it was confirmed that two people were dead. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, while speaking to reporters, confirmed the recovery of two bodies. 'This morning, a large landslide occurred in Uttarkashi, trapping 29 people who were working there. Twenty people have been evacuated from their homes. Two bodies have been recovered so far,' he said. CM Dhami also assured that extensive rescue operations were underway. 'NDRF, SDRF and other related teams are carrying out the rescue operations at the site. For the next two months, all the District Magistrates have been asked to remain on high alert,' he stated. The affected labourers were working at a private hotel construction site. According to an official statement, the rescue efforts involve 20 companies of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), five of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and eight police teams. The missing workers have been identified as Dujelal (55), Keval Thapa (43), Roshani Choudhary (40), Vimla Dhami (26), Kalluram Chaudhary (55), Bobby (38), Chotu (22), Priyansh (20), and Manish Dhami (40). Due to the prevailing weather conditions, authorities have issued advisories asking pilgrims to postpone their travel to Char Dham shrines — Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri — and stay at safe locations until conditions improve. The Chief Minister said that food, accommodation, and essential services are being provided at designated shelters. 'Due to bad weather conditions, we have suspended the Char Dham Yatra, and the pilgrims have been asked to stay in safe locations where food, accommodation and necessary items are being provided to them. A red alert has been issued for Rudraprayag, Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar. For other districts, an orange alert has been issued for two days, beginning Sunday.' He further warned residents living near rivers and streams to take precautions and shift to safer areas. 'Even on July 1 and 2, heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted in the state,' he said. Kanwar devotees to receive grand welcome in Delhi, says Minister Kapil Mishra
New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): Delhi's Art, Culture, and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra on Sunday announced that the Delhi government has made extensive arrangements to ensure a grand welcome for Kanwar Yatris, while highlighting the various initiatives taken to ensure a smooth journey for the devotees. According to Minister Mishra, the Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has taken three main steps: Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to accounts of Kanwar Yatra committees, Free electricity upto 1200 units with 25 per cent reduction in security for electricity, and a 'single-window' clearance being made for permissions to install camps. 'The devotees will be given a grand welcome in Delhi. Three changes have been made at the direction of the CM. Direct Benefit Transfer will be done to the accounts of the Kanwar Yatra Committees. There will be no middlemen. 1200 units of electricity have been made free for Kanwar camps. The security for electricity has been reduced to 25 per cent. A single-window clearance has been created for permissions to install Kanwar Camps,' Mishra told ANI. Earlier, on June 25, after a meeting of the Delhi Cabinet, CM Rekha Gupta had announced new reforms to ensure efficient and dignified service to Kanwariyas (devotees of Lord Shiva), among them being DBT to the Kanwar Committees. She emphasised that, 'the move will enhance transparency and efficiency, ensuring better services for devotees. Only registered committees with valid PAN, bank details, and registration certificates will be eligible for the grant.' The Chief Minister further explained that Kanwar camps will be classified based on the tenting area and the number of days they operate. And committees will be eligible for a minimum grant of Rs 50,000 and a maximum of Rs 10 lakh. CM Gupta informed that 50% of the grant will be given in advance, and the remaining 50% will be released only after the submission of the Utilisation Certificate (UC), verification with geo-tagged photos by the SDM or Tehsildar, and the completion of audit the Kanwar Yatra procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva. According to Hindu beliefs, Parshuram, a devotee of Shiva and Lord Vishnu's avatar participated in the initial procession. Devotees across the country perform worship, fasting and pilgrimage dedicated to the Lord Shiva. (ANI)
