US Women's Open: 'Home Break-In' has Golfer Using Gabby Ruffles' Clubs
Amari Avery is living proof that overcoming adversity is part of the winning process. The former USC Trojans star is at the center of one of the most bizarre storylines of the U.S. Women's Open, yet she is making the most of her time at Erin Hills.
In an incredible turn of events, Avery could not use her set of clubs for the second round of the US Women's Open. She had to play Friday with the clubs of her former Trojans teammate, Gaby Ruffels, who even loaned her a cap.
Journalist Paige Mackenzie reported on the event firsthand during the Golf Channel broadcast:
"Amari Avery had a really unfortunate and scary situation overnight where someone was trying to break into her rental home," Mackenzie reported. "So they had to pack up all their stuff quickly in the middle of the night and go to a hotel."
"She put all her stuff in her travel bag. She and her boyfriend [current USC golfer Gavin Aurilia] have the same travel bag and he took hers by mistake this morning and flew back to LA. So today she's using Gabby Ruffles' entire set after Gabby played her round this morning. She didn't even have a hat."

According to Mackenzie's report, Aurilia's mother is flying to Wisconsin on Saturday to deliver Avery's golf clubs, hopefully before her third round at Erin Hills begins.
However, Avery was one of the players unable to finish the second round due to darkness with two holes to play. She resumed play on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, dropping a shot over her final two holes.
Avery probably wasn't thrilled about having to play with borrowed clubs, but the truth is that the Ruffels set has served her well. During the second round, she had two birdies and two bogeys on the first 16 holes, giving her an even-par score for the round and a 1-under score for the tournament.

Amari Avery of the United States walks off the 18th green during the second round of the U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally 2025 at Erin Hills Golf Course on May 30, 2025 in Erin, Wisconsin. MoreUnfortunately, her third round is not off to the start she was hoping for. Avery is 2-over through four holes, leaving her at 2-over for the tournament. It is unknown whether she is playing her own set of clubs or not. If so, she might want to ask Ruffels for hers back.
Nevertheless, what she accomplished on Friday is no small feat, as it is her debut in major championships. This result would be doubly significant for her, as not only would she achieve an important milestone by making the cut at the highest level, but she also would do so while overcoming the enormous difficulty of playing with borrowed clubs.

Golf Channel Analyst: Scottie Scheffler Could Surpass Tiger Woods
Golf Channel Analyst: Scottie Scheffler Could Surpass Tiger Woods originally appeared on The Spun. Sunday marked the fourth major championship for Scottie Scheffler as he further proves why he's the best in the game right now. But one golf analyst believes there's a world that exists where he actually becomes the greatest of all-time. Few golfers, if any, have ever been as dominant as Tiger Woods was at his peak. However, Golf Channel's Paul McGinley thinks Scheffler is well on his way to surpassing Eldrick if he can keep this up. "The secret sauce for Scottie Scheffler is between the ears. That's where he's at the best. I have not seen a competitor anywhere close to Tiger Woods as good as this guy. That's how high the bar is," McGinley began. "And I think as time goes on, he might even prove to be a better one. He might even prove to have more longevity than Tiger Woods at the top. Because, at this moment in time, it's hard to see him getting derailed because he's so stable off the course as much as he's stable on the golf course." "And it looks like he's got that fine [balance] between golf being really important and loving it and loving to compete, but also that it's not the most important thing in his life," the former world No. 18 added. "That is the sweet spot there, to not be so obsessed with something that it's also still fun, and that he can leave it behind if it's not a good day." "And I really do think that this guy is going to be around for a long long time. And it's hard to see what could derail him. There's so many things he's dealt with in life, as well as in his golf career, that he's circumnavigated and got through the other side." Scottie almost feels unstoppable right now. And even if there's still a long way to go before he puts himself in the rarified air of Tiger Woods — he's certainly chipping Channel Analyst: Scottie Scheffler Could Surpass Tiger Woods first appeared on The Spun on Jul 20, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 20, 2025, where it first appeared.

Skip Bin Hire vs. DIY Waste Disposal: Which Saves You More Time and Money?
Scottie Scheffler isn't just dominating professional golf — he's doing it with a mindset that rivals legends. 'I would equate him — at least in terms of mentality — to an athlete like Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods… he uses the tiniest of slights… and makes sure you can use it to fire yourself up to do the next thing.' That's how Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard and Ryan Lavner described Scheffler on their podcast, echoing what much of the golf world already believes: Scottie Scheffler is operating at a level few others have ever reached. And it is not just the podcast hosts who agree on that. Jon Rahm, who had a tough outing at The Open Championship at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland, agrees with them, too. Rahm carded a 1 under par on the last day to finish at 3 under par, securing T34 on the leaderboard. That is nearly 14 strokes behind the consistent Scottie Scheffler, who won the event. Rahm was full of praise for the growth shown by the four-time Major winner. 'Very few players have been able to do what he's done. He's won three majors in three years — or four years. No, three years. Won nine times last season, and he keeps going on. He's doing what everybody wants to do.' Rahm stated. Scheffler claimed his first-ever win on the PGA Tour in 2022 at the WM Phoenix Open. In the last four years, he has outdone himself, claiming fifteen more wins, en route to being World No. 1. This includes a ridiculous stretch during the 2024 season, right after Rahm left for LIV Golf, where Scheffler recorded 7 wins on the PGA Tour. He's won three majors in three years — or four years. No, three years. Won nine times last season, and he keeps going on. He's doing what everybody wants to do.' — Ron Mintz (@MintzGolf) July 20, 2025 The two seasons before Scheffler won his first PGA Tour title, Scheffler carded 15 top 10 finishes, including a runner-up position at the World Golf Championships and third at the Memorial Tournament. It seemed like he could never get over the hump before his victory in Arizona. 'What I keep reminding myself is he was able to turn things around drastically. From not being able to close out early on some of the chances he had to getting it done often. If he's been able to do it, all of us are able to do it.' The Spaniard further added. ADVERTISEMENT Article continues below this ad 'I've definitely played really high, and I've had my battles against him head to head, and it's always been a lot of fun. I'm optimistic that I can get to that level as well. Obviously it's not easy, but I'm optimistic it can be done.' The 2023 Masters Champion professed. And the respect between the two is mutual, as Scheffler had previously mentioned that the one thing he misses from LIV Golf is the fact that a lot of good competitors went away, especially Rahm. Scheffler misses the competition against Jon Rahm 'To be completely honest, Jon [Rahm] was one of my favourite people to play against. We had some good battles throughout the years and I was pretty surprised that he decided to take the money and leave.' Scheffler had stated previously. Rahm and Scheffler were involved in some heavy battles, especially during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. They played each other in singles play, where Scheffler held a slight edge, before Rahm carded a valuable birdie on the last hole to tie the contest. ADVERTISEMENT Article continues below this ad Fans were very recently treated to another classic encounter between the Spaniard and the American at the 2025 PGA Championship. Rahm was the only person who was able to draw level with Scottie Scheffler during the weekend, when they momentarily had the same score on the 11th hole. However, Rahm succumbed to pressure, carding a bogey and two double bogeys across the 16th, 17th, and 18th holes to finish seven strokes behind the eventual winner. Yet, it still remains as a stark reminder of the threat Jon Rahm poses to Scottie Scheffler. Can he continue to bring the same fervour in the future, or will Scottie Scheffler put an insurmountable gap between him and the rest of the field?
