BBC report concludes some stars ‘behave unacceptably'

Spectator28-04-2025
Back to the Beeb, which is better at making the news rather than breaking it these days. Now a new report in the conduct of its employees has concluded that a 'minority' of stars and managers 'behave unacceptably' at work with chiefs failing to address bad behaviour. The review was ordered by the BBC's board after the disturbing Huw Edwards case last year, which saw the ex-presenter plead guilty to having 41 indecent images of children. Good heavens…
The BBC-commissioned report interviewed 2,500 of the corporation's staff members. It found that overall, the institution does not have a toxic work culture, but that there was 'a minority of people who behave unacceptably and whose behaviour is not addressed'. The review blasted the Beeb for showing 'inconsistent execution when it comes to dealing with poor performance and bad behaviour' and remarked that authors had heard 'examples of well-known names not being held to account for poor behaviour'. It added:
These people work in both on and off-air roles, dotted across the organisation in different functions and departments. They are often in positions where power could be abused. Even though they are small in number, their behaviour creates large ripples which negatively impact the BBC's culture and external reputation.
Lovely! The review went on to note: 'We also heard of 'untouchables' who work behind the camera or microphone. The perception was that senior management would turn an eye to poor behaviours when productions were award-winning or attracting large audiences.' How very upstanding, eh?
The latest report comes 12 years after a previous review after the Jimmy Savile scandal, which itself concluded there was a 'strong undercurrent of fear' at the organisation when it came to tackling bullying. In the last year, further complaints about BBC stars including Russell Brand and ex-Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood prompted the Beeb's execs to apologise to staff – while allegations involving former presenter Jermaine Jenas and Masterchef co-host Gregg Wallace made headlines. The much-scrutinised organisation says it will introduce reforms to tackle bad behaviour – including an improved disciplinary policy, code of conduct and complaint mechanisms – with chairman Samir Shah insisting he would draw 'a line in the sand'. It's about time…

Wayne Rooney set to become BBC Match of the Day pundit

The beloved BBC sports show will be very different for the upcoming season, after the departure of former host Gary Lineker last year. Lineker, who presented the show from 1999 until 2025, left following the conclusion of the 2024–25 Premier League season. Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan will host Match of the Day from the start of the 2025-26 season, and a new star pundit will also feature. Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney is set to join the team on the BBC show as a pundit for the new season, according to reports. A source told The Sun: 'Wayne is a natural broadcaster; he is warm, witty and forensically knowledgeable about all aspects of the game. 'He still has a deep love for football and also gets on well with everyone on both sides of the camera. 'He is eminently likeable, and has impressed on his outings to date - viewers have also really taken to him, which has been clear from social media commentary. 'Wayne will be a key part of next year's World Cup coverage, which is a massive coup, and will provide some much-needed expertise on Match of the Day in the wake of Gary's departure. For Wayne Rooney, penalties were all in the practice 🎯#BBCFootball #MOTD2 "Everyone, including Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski, is incredibly excited to get him on board. It's a great signing.' Rooney made over 550 appearances for Manchester United, and more than 100 for England. He will join a team that already includes names such as Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, and Alex Scott. The BBC revealed earlier this year that Match of the Day will now be presented by Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan. It came after Gary Lineker stepped down from presenting the show. It will mark the first time the role of lead presenter across both Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2, and the latest addition to the BBC's football highlights portfolio, Match of the Day Champions League, will be shared by three presenters. A post shared by BBC SPORT (@bbcsport) Kelly is from Glasgow and is the daughter of former Scotland and Liverpool footballer Sir Kenny Dalglish. She is currently a Sky Sports presenter and also presents BBC Radio 5 Live's Tuesday night sports coverage. Mark is a veteran at the BBC, having first joined as a continuity announcer in 1996. Since 2013, the 51-year-old has been a regular host of Match of the Day 2, but has also hosted Sky Sports' live coverage of the Carabao Cup. He has also worked in the NFL, cricket, rugby league and golf, and fronted the BBC's coverage of the recent Olympic Games in Paris. Former gymnast Gabby Logan is the daughter of Welsh footballer Terry Yorath. Recommended reading: Who are the new Match of the Day hosts? In a deeply moving message, she recounted their final moments together, filled with emotion and family memories. "My Dad died on Wednesday night," she wrote. "From Sunday me, my Mum and sisters spent precious time with him around the crying, laughing, sharing memories. "On his last day we had nursing home afternoon tea, chippy chips and wine together," reports the Manchester Evening News. "He drifted away gently with me and Amy holding him and telling him to "go head. We'll see you there soon. And he did. I had my hand on his heart as the ripples softened and stopped. "A gentle end to a gentle life. So much love and laughter and sunshine across days I'll never forget." Nina reflected further: "He is in my mind all the time now as we adjust to a world without him in it. I can't quite accept that's real yet. But we think it's really important for anyone going through this to know that the end can be peaceful and beautiful. "Kim, Daniel, Anna, Moody, Charlotte, Clara, Eddie, Obi, Sarah, Kat, Michael, Colin, Dorothy, Helen, Gracie and all the care home staff and residents who welcomed us in to their world and made it our home for those days and nights we can't thank you enough." Take care of yourself and your family." Another sympathised: "Oh Nina I'm so sorry for your loss. You gave him a beautiful send off and were with him as he passed and that means so much. Thinking of you and all the family so much xxx."

Annabel Croft's massive net worth from BBC job and stance on dating after husband's death

Annabel Croft's massive net worth from BBC job and stance on dating after husband's death Annabel Croft was one of Britain's most exciting tennis prospects in the 1980s, and fast forwarding to this summer, the 1984 junior Wimbledon champion is on everybody's screens at SW19 Annabel Croft is currently working for the BBC at Wimbledon (Image: 2025 Visionhaus ) Annabel Croft has become one of the BBC's most recognisable and distinguished tennis pundits and commentators. Croft, 58, has endless expertise and experience in the sport, having won junior Wimbledon all the way back in 1984. She has gone on to become a cultured and informative voice, ever since she started working for the BBC as a Wimbledon summariser on Five Live in 2000. ‌ However, things away from the court have not been easy for Croft, who is still mourning the death of her husband Mel Coleman in 2023. ‌ Despite her personal tragedy, she is still appearing on the nation's screens, offering her expert insights on all things tennis. With the second week of Wimbledon upon us, Wales Online has taken a look at Croft's life and work. Massive net worth While it is difficult to ascertain what her exact net worth is, previous reports have claimed Croft's value is at around £1.2million. This is considering the prize money she amassed over the course of her tennis career, which saw her reach a career high ranking of No. 24 in the world while also winning £201,254. However, the bulk of her net worth is believed to be rooted in her television work. Croft starred in Series 21 of Strictly Come Dancing, where she finished fourth while dancing with partner Johannes Radebe. Article continues below Croft has also presented television shows such as Treasure Hunt and Inceptor, while also working as a tennis pundit for the BBC, Eurosport and Sky Sports. Primarily, her main work is with the Beeb, where she works as a commentator, pundit and presenter, especially when Wimbledon is on. Husband's heartbreaking death Annabel Croft and Mel Coleman pictured in 2013 (Image: Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images ) In May 2023, Croft's late husband of 30 years Mel Coleman, passed away after suffering from sepsis. At the time, Coleman was battling stage four colon cancer that had spread throughout his body. ‌ Croft told The Telegraph that 97 per cent of his liver was covered with tumours. Only 12 weeks after his diagnosis, he passed away at the age of 60. While it was assumed he had died of cancer, Croft revealed he had actually died of sepsis, which she says may have been caused by a tumour that was perforated while on a flight back from Portugal. Opening up on her husband's death, Croft said: "I have traumatic flashbacks of the day Mel died. During his final hours, as he drifted in and out of consciousness, he started listing instructions like, 'Change the tyre on the van' and then saying to the children, 'Sorry I can't be there for your weddings.' "That memory breaks my heart. After Mel died, it didn't feel real, but as though he was away on a trip and would reappear. Weirdly, the pain of grief feels like it's growing, rather than easing, because of the realisation that he's not coming back.' ‌ Stance on dating Croft does not expect to return to the dating scene any time soon (Image: Getty Images ) Coleman's death was just over two years ago, so it is understandable it would still feel raw to her. Croft recently said she did not have the mental headspace to return to the dating scene, saying: " I don't want to be a professional widow, but I'm not ready for another partner.' In another interview with Hello magazine, she affirmed this stance again, stating she has not even thought about that prospect. The Orpington-born star said: "I don't even consider it. Article continues below " It's not something I'm thinking about at all. I'm not in that headspace – it's way too soon."
