
No more ham sandwiches! Aussie state moves forward with ban on public transport - and that's not the only thing on the list
Set to be enforced from July 1, the ban will remove items which are considered as junk food from being advertised on Adelaide 's buses, trains and trams.
The items include processed meats, including ham, as well as any images of lollies, chocolate, desserts, soft drinks, chips, ice creams and other confectionary products
Removing the advetisement's is a measured strike designed to limit the state's children from being exposed to unhealthy food and drink advertising.
However, leading marketing industry body Australian Association of National Advertising (AANA) has criticised the move, claiming the 'blanket ban' was drastic and unjustified.
'As it stands, this policy bans all processed meats, which means a simple ham salad sandwich can't be advertised.' AANA CEO Josh Faulks told Newswire.
'This simply doesn't make sense and the government should be making evidence-based decisions, not blanket bans that don't align with nutritional science.'
Mr Faulks warned the policy, if it comes into effect, would have a negative impact on charities and businesses as it would prohibit all ads showing the banned products.
He said the AANA opposed all advertising bans for food and beverages, with the peak body urging the state government to adopt a 'science-based approach'.
Under a science-based approach, a nutrient profiling scoring criteria would be used to determine which foods should be restricted from being advertised, he explained.
Mr Faulks said under the ban an ad showing a birthday cake celebrating the anniversary of a children's charity would be banned.
He added, even events like Tasting Australia would not be allowed to show any images of charcuterie boards or pastries in any advertisements.
Government figures show some 35 per cent of children and 63 per cent of adults in South Australia are overweight or obese.
Health Minister Chris Picton hit out at the AANA's stance, claiming the body was 'scaremongering'.
Mr Picton said the body was providing misinformation about the policy and that it did not have the authority to decide what was displayed on public transport.
'These lobbyists want to force the State Government to keep having junk food ads on our own buses amidst an obesity crisis,' Mr Picton said.
'The policy applies to government-owned Adelaide Metro buses, trains and trams. It is not up to advertising industry lobbyists to tell us what can be displayed on our public transport assets.'
Mr Picton added the children are bombarded with unhealthy food and drink ads, which has been long recognised as having a negative impact on their diets.
it's understood Mr Faulks claim that Tasting Australia ads could be banned is false, as the items on a charcuterie board would appear as 'incidental' and 'unbranded'.
Under the proposed policy, ads that feature incidental food or drink items that are unbranded and generic would be permitted even if the items are considered as unhealthy.
The ban has also been backed by a number of organisations including Preventative Health SA and the Cancer Council.
In 2022, Cancer Council warned parents to stop putting cold, processed meats in their children's school sandwiches as there was a link between the food items and an increased risk of bowel and stomach cancer.
The Australian Dietary Guidelines labelled the foods as 'discretionary' - like cakes and biscuits - and therefore advised processed meats should be eaten occasionally.

Trigger warnings ‘have no meaningful impact' on students
Trigger warnings that tell students they may find a lecture distressing do not make them feel safer and have no meaningful impact on how they engage with difficult material, a study has suggested. Researchers tested the effects of trigger warnings and other pre-lecture notices on 738 students in the US who listened to a talk on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They found no evidence that a trigger warning improved students' sense of psychological safety or trust in the lecturer, or their willingness to discuss controversial topics. However, when a speaker said their classroom was a 'safe space' and that students could leave if they felt distressed, students later reported having felt more comfortable. They also rated the lecturer more positively, albeit while also perceiving them as more politically liberal and supportive of censorship. The results may stir debate in universities. For years, trigger warnings have been used in an effort to help students, particularly trauma survivors, brace for potentially disturbing material. The new findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, suggest that they may be more symbolic than effective. Despite widespread support among students, trigger warnings simply did not achieve very much, according to Dr Victoria Bridgland, lead author of the study and a psychology lecturer at Flinders University in South Australia. 'Some people believe trigger warnings help students feel supported by the teacher,' she said. 'But our research shows they fail to do that.' Safe-space messages, by contrast, appeared to foster trust and openness. However, they also carried political signals that seemed to affect how students interpreted the instructor's political leanings. 'It's not just about the content being taught,' Bridgland said. 'It's also about the emotional and psychological climate in the classroom. 'This matters because small cues at the start of a lesson can shape how students feel and behave. The trigger warning said: 'Before we begin today's lecture, I want to issue a trigger warning. The content we're about to cover includes discussions about interpersonal trauma, such as sexual violence. This content may evoke a distressing emotional reaction for some people, particularly those with a history of trauma.' The safe-space notification took a different tone: 'Before we begin today's lecture, I want to emphasise to everyone that this classroom is a safe space. If at any point the material becomes too distressing, please feel free to disengage as necessary. It's essential to prioritise your emotional safety.' A third group of students received both messages, and a fourth received neither — just a neutral introduction to the topic. The lectures themselves were otherwise identical and professionally recorded, allowing researchers to isolate the effects of the introductory notices.

Brazil's EMS to sell injector pens to treat obesity
SAO PAULO, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Brazilian pharmaceutical company EMS on Friday said that local pharmacies will start selling its injector pens aimed at treating diabetes and obesity from August 4. The pens, made in Brazil, uses liraglutide as an active ingredient, like Saxenda, from Novo Nordisk ( opens new tab, which has demonstrated consistent benefits in controlling blood glucose and weight, EMS said. Saxenda is part of the same class of medication as Nordisk's popular Ozempic. A total of 100,000 Olire pens, for the treatment of obesity, and 50,000 Lirux pens, for the control of type 2 diabetes, will be available at select pharmacy chains in Brazil. Erin is a gentle and beloved single mum in Melbourne. She's just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 29
At just 29, Melbourne mum Erin Kelly is facing the heartbreaking reality that she's living on borrowed time. A single parent to her eight-year-old daughter Evie, Erin has recently been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's - a devastating blow made even more cruel by its rare genetic cause. Now she's in a race against the clock to fund the one treatment that could slow it down. 'There's no chance of me reaching retirement age so I'm doing everything I can now, while I still can,' Erin told the Daily Mail. Alzheimer's typically strikes later in life, but for Erin, it's deeply personal, and terrifyingly genetic. In May 2024, the young mum discovered she carries a rare mutation of the PSEN1 gene, one that guarantees she will develop Alzheimer's earlier than normal. Only about 200 families worldwide carry it. 'With young onset Alzheimer's, they (the specialists) said only 1 per cent of young onset Alzheimer's cases are caused by a genetic mutation,' Erin said. 'I always knew there was a 50/50 chance I'd develop it later in life. But even with my family history, I never imagined it would happen to me this early.' Erin lost her mum to Alzheimer's when she was just 17. Her mum was only 50. After further digging, she's now found out that eight members of her extended family have battled the disease too. However, the PSEN1 mutation is what makes Erin's diagnosis so rare and so aggressive. Doctors can't say much without more tests, but have told Erin that her life expectacny is between another eight to 15 years. The official diagnosis came in July, following a year-long journey of MRIs, specialist consultations and anxious waiting. It was Erin's father who first urged her to get tested for the mutation in May 2024, after she began noticing small lapses and mixed-up words, which she initially dismissed. 'A year ago I contacted Alzheimer's Australia, but they originally said they couldn't help because I didn't have a confirmed diagnosis yet,' she said. 'So, I reached out to many others including neurologists, and they all said they didn't really know what to do with me. But then I ended up with a geriatrician [a doctor specialising in the care of the elderly], and he is helping.' Despite early symptoms and a clear family history, getting answers has been slow and costly. Specialists charged up to $500 a visit. Each scan costs her hundreds more. She has since been referred to a neuropsychologist, speech therapist and dietitian - but couldn't afford to see any of them. Even a medical drink called Souvenaid, formulated to support memory in Alzheimer's patients, was too expensive at $100 a month. 'I've had to pick and choose what I can pay for. I just can't justify that as well, given the position we're in,' she said. Despite her diagnosis, Erin was told she is too young to qualify for Australian clinical trials or subsidised treatment. 'It's like they don't know what to do with me,' she said. But there is a treatment that could help, which is a breakthrough infusion drug called Leqembi. Leqembi, which is administered as an infusion every two weeks, has been shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer's by up to 30 per cent. It works by targeting and removing the sticky amyloid plaques that kill brain cells and cause cognitive decline. There's just one problem - it's only available on a case-by-case basis for people aged 50 to 90, and at a staggering cost of $90,000. 'My doctor basically said that I don't cover a lot of the criteria. But if I can supply the money, then I've got a much higher chance of being accepted,' she said. Since Evie was six weeks old, it's been just the two of them. Erin has poured every ounce of her energy into raising her daughter and building a stable life. Now, she's fighting to hold onto that life and the precious time she has left. She's started creating photo books and writing letters for Evie, capturing memories and family stories she fears she won't be able to tell one day. 'I want her to remember who I was. Who her grandmother was, too, as I'm the only one who can tell her that,' she said. A breakthrough infusion drug called Leqembi could delay Erin's symptoms by up to 30 per cent, but she is too young to qualify for it - unless she can pay $90,000 Erin's family hopes to raise the full $90,000 to cover ongoing treatments and give her a fighting chance at slowing the disease in its tracks. If treatment becomes impossible, the funds will help create lasting memories with Evie too, as well as special time together, and the chance to simply live while she still can. 'She's not asking for a miracle,' her stepsister Jessica said. 'She's just asking for more time.'
