James double helps England bounce back at Euro 2025 with 4-0 win over Dutch
Four days after a lacklustre 2-1 loss to France made Wednesday a must-win match, England came out firing on all cylinders in front of a festive crowd that included Britain's Prince William.
James put England on the scoresheet in the 22nd minute when goalkeeper Hannah Hampton picked out Alessia Russo with a stunning long ball. Russo slipped it to James on the edge of the box who worked the ball onto her left foot before unleashing a screamer into the top corner.
Stanway doubled England's lead seconds before halftime when the Dutch struggled to clear the ball and the midfielder was there to fizz a first-time shot past wrong-footed goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
An unmarked James completed her double in the 60th with an easy shot from inside the box, and Toone added more misery for the Dutch seven minutes later. Russo held up the ball in the penalty area before sending it to a running Toone, who calmly slotted home.

Porto great Jorge Costa dies aged 53 after cardiac arrest
Former Porto captain Jorge Costa died on Tuesday at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training centre, the Portuguese side said. The former defender, who was serving as Porto's Director of Professional Football in his second season in the role, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved. As captain, he led Porto to UEFA Cup glory in 2003 and a Champions League triumph in 2004 under manager Jose Mourinho. The defender was one of six players to win five consecutive Portuguese league championships with Porto, alongside Aloisio, Drulovic, Paulinho Santos, Rui Barros and Folha. Costa returned to the club in April 2024 as director under new president Andre Villas-Boas.

UCI suspends Bulgarian federation chiefs over ethics breaches
The International Cycling Union (UCI) has handed two-year bans to Evgeniy Gerganov and Danail Angelov, president and vice president of the Bulgarian Cycling Federation (BCF), for breaches of its ethics code, the global governing body said on Tuesday. An independent ethics commission found that Angelov had manipulated cycling events and verbally assaulted and intimidated members of the cycling community, the UCI said in a statement. Gerganov, a former professional rider, had tried to consolidate control over the BCF along with Angelov, abusing their authority to modify internal structures and retaliate against opponents, the UCI added. Angelov was found to be involved in "irregular modifications of start lists and facilitating timing anomalies in official competitions, granting undue advantages to certain athletes and undermining sporting fairness". Gerganov did not try to stop or report incidents of verbal assault and intimidation, which involved members of the federation including Angelov, the UCI added. The suspensions, which can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), prevent Gerganov and Angelov from holding any position within a cycling body or being involved in the organisation of any cycling event.

Cadillac will add value as 11th F1 team, says McLaren's Brown
LONDON :Cadillac's arrival in Formula One next year as an 11th team will bring added financial value with new partners and more fan engagement rather than diluting resources, according to McLaren's American chief executive Zak Brown. The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The first new team since U.S.-owned Haas debuted in 2016 said in July they were already two thirds of the way towards a targeted headcount of 600 by next season and no longer even the smallest outfit.
