Alpine skiing-U.S. Ski & Snowboard secures sponsor extension, sources say deal near $100M
U.S. Ski & Snowboard officials declined to comment on the value of the deal but sources told Reuters that it was close to $100 million, making it the richest sponsorship in the organization's history.
"In the past, we would have these four-year cycles where, especially off the back of an Olympic year, we would maybe drop off a little bit," U.S. Ski & Snowboard President and CEO Sophie Goldschmidt told Reuters.
"We're not having these kinds of highs and lows. And as you look at the long-term development of athletes and how we can support them, to know now that we're going to be able to consistently build kind of year on year in how we support them is huge for us."
The deal keeps the title sponsor for the U.S. Ski Team in place through a critical moment for the national governing body, as celebrities like record-breaker Mikaela Shiffrin and comeback story Lindsey Vonn spike interest.
The deal offers added visibility for Stifel, a partner since 2022, with the Olympics returning to Salt Lake City in 2034. It will be the first time the United States has hosted the Winter Games in 32 years.
"It just gives us the sustainability and consistent financial resources to be able to support our athletes holistically," said Goldschmidt.
The deal comes as the U.S. governing body moves to expand its footprint into surfing, throwing its hat into the ring to be the de facto organizer for the U.S. surf team at the LA28 Games at an uncertain time in the sport.
USA Surfing accepted decertification after the Tokyo Games that took place in 2021 amid reported concerns from the USOPC over governance and operations.
"We wouldn't want to take this on if we didn't strongly believe we could put the surfers in a better place and that it would also be additive to our core sports and organization," said Goldschmidt.
USA Surfing, which announced its bid for re-certification in March, has balked at the move, claiming U.S. Ski & Snowboard does not have the proper competition infrastructure in place.
Goldschmidt, who said the organization was seeking to manage the elite side of the sport without becoming the national governing body outright, declined to address USA Surfing's criticisms directly: "there are plenty of examples of how different entities have managed multiple sports."
"I know firsthand that there's a lot of similarities and synergies that we could optimize and take advantage of to really help surfing grow and get to a place where I think we all feel that it deserves to be," she said.

US, NATO developing novel funding mechanism for Ukraine weapons transfers
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States and NATO are working on a novel approach to supply Ukraine with weapons using funds from NATO countries to pay for the purchase or transfer of U.S. arms, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The renewed transatlantic cooperation on Ukraine comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with Moscow's ongoing attacks on its neighbor. Trump, who initially took a more conciliatory tone toward Russia as he tried to end the more than three-year war in Ukraine, has threatened to start imposing tariffs and other measures if Moscow shows no progress toward ending the conflict by August 8. The president said last month the U.S. would supply weapons to Ukraine, paid for by European allies, but did not indicate how this would be done. NATO countries, Ukraine, and the United States are developing a new mechanism that will focus on getting U.S. weapons to Ukraine from the Priority Ukraine Requirements List, known under the acronym PURL, the sources said. Ukraine would prioritize the weapons it needs intranches of roughly $500 million, and NATO allies - coordinated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte - would then negotiate among themselves who would donate or pay for items on the list. Through this approach, NATOallies hope to provide $10 billion in arms for Ukraine, said a European official, speaking on condition of anonymity. It was unclear over what timeframe they hope to supply the arms. "That is the starting point, and it's an ambitious target that we're working towards. We're currently on that trajectory. We support the ambition. We need that sort of volume," the European official said. NATO declined to comment. The White House, Pentagon, and Ukrainian embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment. Russian forces are gradually advancing against Ukraine, and control one-fifth of Ukraine's territory. FASTER ARMS RESTOCKING If a NATO country decides to donate weapons to Ukraine, the mechanism would allow that country to effectively bypass lengthy U.S. arms sales procedures to replenish its own stocks, said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. But the NATO country would have to pay the U.S. up front for the speedier replenishment. The money would be paid into a U.S.-held account, possibly at the U.S. Treasury Department, or to an escrow fund, although the exact structure remains unclear, the official said. NATO countries also have the option of simply paying the United States to send weapons directly to Ukraine. In that case, the payment could be made via NATO or directly to the U.S. Department of Defense, said a second source, speaking on condition of anonymity. This would be in addition to the United States' own effort to identify arms from U.S. stockpiles to send to Ukraine under the Presidential Drawdown Authority, which allows the U.S. president to draw from current weapons stocks to help allies in an emergency. At least one tranche of weapons for Ukraine is currently being negotiatedunder the new mechanism, two sources said, though it was unclear if any money has yet been transferred. Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress have introduced legislation, known as the PEACE Act, that aims to create a fund at the U.S. Treasury in which allies can deposit money that would pay to replenish U.S. military equipment donated to Ukraine. Ukraine's needs remain consistent with previous months - air defenses, interceptors, systems, rockets, and artillery. Soccer-Milner to honour former teammate Jota with jersey number switch
(Reuters) -Brighton & Hove Albion's James Milner will don the number 20 shirt this season as a tribute to former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in Spain last month. Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in early July when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames in northwestern Spain. The Portuguese forward had worn the number 20 during his time at Liverpool, where he and Milner played together for three seasons before the veteran midfielder's move to Brighton in 2023. "Once I heard Carlos (Baleba) was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota," Milner said. "(He was) an amazing player I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. So it'd be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League." Liverpool are permanently retiring the number 20 after consultation with the player's wife Rute and family. The squad number will not be used at any level, including the women's team and academy. The 39-year-old Milner recently agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton and is chasing Premier League history of his own. A mere 15.7 seconds separated the top five, with Hyundai's Adrien Fourmaux third and 2.8 seconds adrift of his Belgian teammate after 10 of the gravel stages through the Finnish forests. Toyota's Takamoto Katsuta was fourth and Finnish teammate Sami Pajari fifth. Rovanpera had not led a gravel rally this season before Friday but he hit the front after the second stage and was fastest in three of the day's nine stages.
