Kapa haka group fostering connection

A new kapa haka group is helping Maori students from two Dunedin secondary schools connect with each other and their culture.
Columba and John McGlashan Colleges' combined group Te Tira Haere o te Hahi competed at Te Hautoka, the biennial Otago and Southland kapa haka competition in Dunedin for the first time earlier this month.
John McGlashan College kaitataki tane (male leader) Jonty Ellis, 17, felt the group was beginning to come together this year.
"Instead of just individuals, we're starting to find ourselves and our identities."
The kapa haka group was a great opportunity for students from both schools to embrace Maori tikanga.
"I find it's a way to connect to my culture and to find my own identity in myself.
"I grew up not really in a Māori household, so I think it's helping me find my way."
Columba College kaitataki wahine (female leader) Lula Joseph, 17, said the group's first outing at Te Hautoka went well.
"It was definitely nerve-racking because it was both of our first times performing at regionals. But I think it ... was also excitement"

A lot of Lula's whanau was not from Dunedin and the group had become her wider family in the city.
"In the leadup to Te Hautoka I had to learn a lot of things I'd never done before, especially with leading the group.
"I've got to talk to aunties back home and it's been a really big part of improving myself as a person," she said.
Joining forces with the boys from John McGlashan made a big difference to the way her school performed kapa haka.
"Joining with the boys has allowed us to go further and become better and become what we are."
The group practised on Sundays under the guidance of tutors from John McGlashan (Elizabeth Clark and David Beazley) and Columba (Nick Price and Teresa Andrew).
Ms Clark said the group came about after last year's Maori speech competition Ngā Manu Kōrero.
Tutors from the schools had supported each other in the past at other events and decided to work together.
She said external tutors Neihana Matiu and Ripeka Potiki were central to the group coming together, writing waiata, creating actions and dedicating hours of their time.

Highlanders trio picked to play for Māori ABs
Three Highlanders have been named in the Māori All Blacks squad for a short international campaign. Loose forwards TK Howden (Tūhoe) and Nikora Broughton (Ngārauru, Ngāti Ruanui) and winger Jonah Lowe (Ngāti Pikiao) have all previously worn the Māori jersey. Howden and Broughton are part of a strong loose forward crew that includes Crusaders No 8 Cullen Grace, Hurricanes utility man Caleb Delany and Chiefs wrecking ball Jahrome Brown. Lowe, who can also play centre, is part of a small group officially listed as outside backs and containing Blues players Zarn Sullivan and Cole Forbes, though others like Corey Evans and Bailyn Sullivan can play further out. Rivez Reihana will be favoured to wear the No 10 jersey after guiding the Crusaders to the Super Rugby Pacific title, while solid Blues hooker Kurt Eklund is awarded the captaincy. There are 11 uncapped players in the 29-strong squad for games against the Japan XV (Tokyo, Saturday) and Scotland (Whangārei, July 5). Māori All Blacks head coach Ross Filipo said he had selected a highly experienced squad led by 32-year-old Aucklander Eklund. "This team demands a strong leader with mana, and Kurt has shown that quality and more over a long period of time, for the Māori All Blacks, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and the Blues," Filipo said. "He has a lot of experience throughout the squad and that will be a strength for what will be two tough matches." New caps range from 20-year-old Blues midfielder Xavi Taele, the youngest member of the squad, to 31-year-old Taranaki prop Jared Proffit. "It's a proud moment for all the new caps and their whānau," Filipo said. Meanwhile, Highlanders fullback Jacob Ratumaitavuki-Kneepkens has flown to Cape Town to play for the Barbarians against the Springboks this weekend. Three Highlanders named in new look Māori All Blacks
The Māori All Blacks have a new captain and 11 uncapped players for two matches against the Japan XV in Tokyo and Scotland in Whangārei. Hooker Kurt Eklund (Ngāti Kahu) in his first time as Māori All Blacks captain will lead a 29-strong squad that includes new caps, which range from 20-year-old Blues midfielder Xavi Taele, the youngest member of the squad, to 31-year-old Gisborne-born, Taranaki prop Jared Proffit. Head coach Ross Filipo said 32-year-old Aucklander Eklund was the right fit for captain. "This team demands a strong leader with mana, and Kurt has shown that quality and more over a long period of time, for the Māori All Blacks, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and the Blues.
