'He Really Did That': People Can't Cope With The Author Of 'Wicked's' Seriously Brutal Reason For Giving Elphaba The Last Name 'Thropp'

Buzz Feed14-02-2025
It's fair to say that Wicked has been having a bit of a moment in recent months, entirely thanks to the movie adaptation that was released back in November, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Prior to the film, the story was perhaps best known for its stage show, which you may be surprised to learn isn't its actual origin.
In fact, Wicked's roots actually trace back to a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which was, in turn, inspired by the 1900 L. Frank Baum book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and its famous 1939 film adaptation.
Just eight years after Maguire's book was released, his now-iconic story about Glinda and Elphaba made its transition to the stage, debuting in San Francisco in 2003.
Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth famously originated the lead roles in the show, and they continued to lead the cast when Wicked transferred to New York City's iconic Broadway later that same year.
And while Idina, Cynthia, Kristin, and Ariana undeniably know almost everything there is to know about the beloved characters that they've brought to life on both stage and screen, nobody knows more than the man who first developed these characters way back in the '90s.
Luckily for us, Gregory took part in a "Writing Wicked" panel at BroadwayCon on Sunday, where he generously shared some insight into his process when writing the book. Gregory was joined by Winnie Holzman, who wrote the script for the stage adaptation of Wicked and co-wrote the two movies.
In footage shared by the Broadway Maven, Gregory was asked how he came to write the Wizard Of Oz spin-off, and he revealed that it was largely due to the annual television airing of the 1939 film being the only movie he and his family watched growing up.
He recalled acting the movie out with his siblings the next day, and he 'started inventing with the story' at age 6.
Winnie later detailed changing Glinda's last name when she adapted Gregory's book because he had given her 'a long name' in the novel, and she wanted something 'a little shorter' like Elphaba, whose last name is Thropp. She offered the fun fact that she settled on 'Upland' for Glinda in tribute to Gregory, who confirmed that he has lived at 'three different addresses' with 'Upland' in the street name.
Returning the favor, Gregory explained why he chose 'Thropp' to be Elphaba's last name. He told the crowd: 'Nobody has ever asked me where Elphaba's last name comes from, her name is Elphaba Thropp.'

'Like 'Elphaba,' I didn't want it to be a pretty name,' Gregory went on. 'First and last name, I did not want it to be elegant and synonymous and sensuous: Elphaba Thropp, [it's] slapstick.'
He deadpanned: ''Thropp' is the sound that a house makes when it falls on your sister.'
This is, of course, a reference to Elphaba's sister Nessarose's death in the story, and the brutal reality of Gregory's thought process left Wicked fans absolutely gagged when his quote surfaced on X. Reacting to a viral Wicked Update account tweet about what the author had said, one person wrote: 'i just thropped to my knees.'
'he's so real for that,' another replied. One more popular response reads: 'Dark humoured, camp king.'
'After you read the Wicked books and think, 'Who could write such a WEIRD, deep, political, eccentric thing?' and then look up Gregory Maguire, it all makes sense,' somebody else remarked.
Another simply wrote: 'He did that. He really did that.' One more quipped: 'I'm screaming that's so sick.'
But Gregory isn't all sass, and he also got serious as he reflected on the deeper philosophy behind Wicked while sharing the impact he hoped his book and the musical would have on audiences. He said: 'The place that you arrive at the end of the musical is the identical place that I wanted people to arrive in the end of my novel, which was a lump in the throat and a reminder that what literature — whether it be theater, whether it be novels — brings us to is a reminder of how little time we have to do good with our lives.'
'We must cherish the ones we love,' he went on. 'We must say it out loud; we must protect one another; and we must do our work while we have the spirit.'

Russell Wilson Got Major Dad Points After Cynthia Erivo FaceTimed Into His Daughter's ‘Wicked'-Themed Birthday Party

Russell Wilson's daughter didn't need to look to the western sky on her birthday to find Cynthia Erivo — she simply had to accept a FaceTime call from the Wicked star. While guesting on The Tonight Show on Tuesday (July 15), the football player had nothing but kind words for the singer-actress after revealing that Erivo had called into his 8-year-old little girl's Wicked-themed birthday party. Wilson shares Sienna with Ciara, along with 11-year-old stepson Future Wilburn, 5-year-old son Win and 1-year-old daughter Amora. More from Billboard Cynthia Erivo Opens Up About Her Queerness: 'The More Yourself You Are, The Better Understanding Starts to Happen' Shakira & The Weeknd to Headline 2025 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park The Who Kick Off Farewell Tour in Italy, Perform First Show Since Zak Starkey Sacking 'We have the coolest birthday parties,' Wilson told host Jimmy Fallon, sharing photos of himself dressed as Wicked's Fiyero and Sienna painted green like Elphaba. Noting that his oldest daughter is Wicked-obsessed, the New York Giants star went on to say that Erivo is 'the best.' 'She's awesome, because she had no problem hopping on the FaceTime,' Wilson continued. 'Ciara and her are really, really close. It was cool, 'cause Sienna was like, 'Um, can you sing to me now?' And she just hopped right into song. It was a good birthday, for sure.' The athlete also took a moment to gush about Sienna. 'I'm telling you guys, she's probably going to run for president one day,' the proud dad told Fallon's audience. 'She is a boss lady. She runs the show — Ciara runs the show, and [Sienna] gets it from her momma.' Sienna is just one of countless young fans who love Wicked, which premiered last November. As of late May, it had grossed $755.9 million worldwide, more than any other film adaptation of a Broadway musical. The movie's sequel, Wicked: For Good, will hit theaters in November. Of all the hype the Wicked duology has generated so far, Erivo recently told Billboard Pride Editor Stephen Daw in her June cover story, 'It's insane … and it's insane while it's happening, too.' 'She's able to access her rage more,' she continued at the time of how her character evolves in the second film. 'The scent I wore changed. The makeup changed. Little shifts that bring you to a more mature version of who Elphaba becomes. And she is delicious in this next one.' Watch Wilson's full Tonight Show interview above. Meet our favorite cosplayers at the 2025 Florida Supercon in Miami Beach

They came to the Miami Beach Convention Center wearing painted faces and homemade masks, complicated headpieces and gravity-defying shoes, lugging swords crafted not from steel but from foam, glue and sheer determination. They came as video game villains and big-screen superheroes, anime princesses and obscure creatures from other worlds. Professor Dumbledore from the 'Harry Potter' series was there. So were Nick Fury from the Marvel Universe and the ever-green Elphaba from 'Wicked' and pretty much every 'Star Wars' character from Greedo to the Emperor and R2D2, too. The annual Florida Supercon drew thousands of cosplayers to the three-day event for panels, games, photo ops, dance parties and autograph signings from stars like Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye from the Marvel Universe); John Boyega (from the 'Star Wars' franchise); and Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston ('Doctor Who'). Look in one direction and you might spot Poison Ivy. Look the other way and Doctor Who appears, waving a sonic screwdriver. You could barely turn around without tripping over a character from 'One Piece.' And the ultracreepy Pyramid Head from the 'Silent Hill' horror video game inspired more than a few costumes — and probably a few nightmares as well. Here are some of our favorite costumes from Florida Supercon, which continues 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jason Statham Shows Incredible Stunt Prowess At 57 By Diving Off A Yacht, And Vin Diesel And Ludacris Have Thoughts

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Everyone in the world knows Jason Statham as an action star leading films like Crank, The Meg and The Beekeeper in addition to his part within the Fast And Furious franchise... but did you know that he has a serious background as a diver? Years before his breakout in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels and even before his modeling career (yes, he had a modeling career), Statham spent a dozen years on Britain's National Swimming Squad and competed in multiple events in the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Knowing this, it's weirdly not at all surprising to see photos of the actor performing some extreme dives off of a yacht in a new Instagram post filled with vacation pictures – but one nonetheless has to appreciate the love shared in the comments section by some of his Fast & Furious castmates. Check out the gallery of photos below: If you didn't know about Jason Statham's history as a legit diver, you probably could have figured out that he has some kind of background in the sport from that first photo. The guy might be decades removed from his heyday in the pool, but that shot demonstrates the form of an Olympian (and kudos to the uncredited photographer!). As for the reactions... I think you can also probably guess what Vin Diesel had to say about this collection of vacation photos. The actor doesn't comment on Jason Statham's diving prowess or skills while operating a jet ski. Instead, he focuses on who his co-star is hanging out with and cites what he has long said (and oft-repeated) is the core theme of the Fast & Furious franchise: Family… Perfectly on brand. Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, on the other hand, left a comment suggesting that he is well aware of Jason Statham's background as an athlete and complemented his maintained skills with three words of adulation and a pair of knowing emojis: Still got it 🏊‍♂️ 🫡 It's fun to see Jason Statham, Vin Diesel and Ludacris interacting on social media... but when will we get to see Deckard Shaw, Dominic Torretto, or Tej Parker back together again? That question doesn't have a firm answer quite yet, but at the very least we do now have a release window for Fast X: Part 2 / Fast And Furious 11. At the end of last month, Diesel attended an event in Southern California and told the audience gathered there that Universal Pictures is targeting an April 2027 release date – meaning that production will likely begin at the end of next year or the start of 2026. Director Louis Leterrier is back in the director's chair after helming Fast X, and Diesel has made three promises about the sequel: the action will return to Los Angeles, the story will return to be about car culture, and Dom will have an on-screen reunion with Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker's character, who has not appeared in a Fast & Furious movie since Walker's death during the production of Furious 7). The film will also need to provide a conclusion to the many cliffhangers in the previous chapter, including the return of Dwayne Johnson's Luke Hobbes; the resurrection of Gal Gadot's Gisele Yashar; the fate of the flight that had Tej, Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Han (Sung Kang), and Ramsey (Nathalie Emmanuel) on board; and the peril faced by Dom and his son below a breaking dam. Stay tuned for more updates about the project here on CinemaBlend, and check out our Upcoming Action Movie guide to learn about all of the ass-kicking projects on the horizon.
