Tripura govt asks NHDCL to complete NH repair work before Durga puja
The Durga puja, the biggest festival in the northeastern state, will commence on September 29.
Following reports of the bad condition of the national highway from Kumarghat to Churaibari in Unakoti and North districts, PWD secretary Kiran Gitte, along with senior officials of NHIDCL and state PWD, visited the national highway to take stock of the situation on Saturday.
Earlier, Chief Minister Manik Saha also held a meeting with officials to review the bad condition or roads, including the national highway and asked for repair works on a war footing.
"On Saturday, I travelled over 400 km through the national highway from Khowai to Kamalpur and Churaribari via Manu and Kumarghat. Senior officials from NHIDCL and state PWD also accompanied me. The road from Kumarghat to Churaibari needs immediate repair as several patches of it suffered severe damage due to the ongoing monsoon," Gitte told PTI.
According to him, the NHIDCL has been asked to complete the repair work from Kumarghat to Churaibari before Durga puja.
"I have asked NHIDCL to complete repair work by Durga puja. I have also told them to bring high officials (from outside the state) to see the ground reality", he said.
Gitte further added that the state highways or other roads, which are maintained by the state PWD, are better than the national highways executed by the NHIDCL through sub-contractors.
West Tripura MP and former CM Biplab Kumar Deb met the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, in Delhi on July 23 and urged him to send high-level officials to the northeastern state to check the condition of roads.
"Plans are there to construct sustainable RCC roads in the coming days that can withstand the heavy rainfall in Tripura. Urged the Union minister to send a team consisting of high-level officials for quality checking and identifying the defects and take necessary strict actions," Deb posted on Facebook after meeting with Gadkari.

Killing of 3 people in Billawar: Father of slain minor boy urges home minister, LG to deliver justice
Nearly five months on since a 13-year-old boy and his two uncles were found dead in a rivulet in Kathua's Lohai Malhar on March 8, the family on Friday requested home minister Amit Shah and lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha to deliver justice to them. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had spotted and retrieved the bodies of three civilians from a rivulet in the upper reaches of Lohai Malhar in Kathua district. (Getty Images/iStockphoto/ Representational image) 'On March 5 our people, including my 13-year-old son, my brother Yogesh Kumar and brother-in-law Darshan Singh had left home to attend a marriage function. Enroute, they were abducted and their bodies were found in a rivulet on March 8 in Lohai Malhar area,' Chamel Singh told reporters here. 'Till date no FIR has been registered by the police, no FSL report and medical report provided to me. We are awaiting justice,' he added. Singh sought to know who will provide justice to the families of the victims. 'I lost my son, my brother and brother-in-law, who has left behind four daughters and a son,' he said. 'I want to ask our home minister and LG where I should go for justice?,' he added. A day after the bodies were recovered from Ishu Nullah, Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh had termed the deaths an act of terror. 'The brutal killing of 3 youths by terrorists in Bani area of district #Kathua is extremely sad as well as a matter of great concern. There appears to be a deep conspiracy behind spoiling the atmosphere in this peaceful area,' he wrote on X. 'We have discussed this matter with the concerned officials. The Union home secretary is reaching Jammu so that the situation can be assessed on the spot. I am confident that it will be ensured that such incidents do not happen again and the confidence of the people remains strong,' he added. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had spotted and retrieved the bodies of three civilians from a rivulet in the upper reaches of Lohai Malhar in Kathua district. The bodies were spotted with the help of a drone. Security forces suspect that terrorists have been hiding in areas like Lohai Malhar, Machedi and Badnota. On July 8 last year, five soldiers, including a JCO, were killed and five others injured after armed terrorists ambushed an army truck in Kathua district's Badnota village in Billawar tehsil.

Madiga community stages statewide half-naked protest
Bengaluru: In a powerful display of anger and frustration, members of the Madiga community under the banner of the Karnataka Federation of Madiga Organisations staged statewide protests on Thursday, demanding the immediate implementation of internal reservation for Scheduled Castes. Led by former Union Minister A. Narayanaswamy, a large group of protesters gathered at Freedom Park in Bengaluru and held a half-naked protest, raising slogans against the Congress-led Karnataka government. Speaking at the protest, A. Narayanaswamy issued a stern warning: 'If the government does not implement internal reservation immediately, the Madigas will launch a full-scale civil disobedience movement. We will no longer wait, we will not bow to false promises, and we will not wait until the next election.' He added, 'Protests are being held in all districts of Karnataka today. This is a united fight that transcends political lines. This is not a BJP agitation — it is the collective voice of the oppressed. Is the Karnataka government more concerned about power or about solving the problems of the people? Madigas have not received justice, and our patience has run out. If we hit the streets, we will send this government packing.' Criticizing the bureaucracy, Narayanaswamy further lashed out, saying, 'Since 1976, we have demanded justice. But when we ask the Chief Secretary for a report on this long-standing injustice, he doesn't even bother to call a meeting. Is this what governance looks like?' He rejected the idea of basing reservation merely on population. 'This is about correcting historical injustice — about the oppression we've faced for over 40 years. If this backlog of injustice isn't cleared, we will intensify our agitation.' Protests were held in front of Deputy Commissioner offices in 26 districts across the state. 'This shows the political awakening of the Madigas,' Narayanaswamy declared. 'Many MLAs in this state would never have been elected without Madiga votes. Now that they're in power, they've forgotten us. If you don't speak for us, what moral right do you have to ask for our votes?' Angrily questioning the denial of fair representation, he said, 'Is there a rule in this country that Madigas must never get proper reservation? During elections to Zilla Panchayats and other local bodies, the government keeps pushing it to 'tomorrow'. The same Constitution that allowed for a national emergency to help a Prime Minister cling to power is now silent about the injustice to Madigas.' Highlighting the struggles faced by students in the community, he added, 'Many talented Madiga children cannot afford to pursue MBBS or higher education due to lack of support. Do you understand this pain? Does the government even care?' The protest ended with a collective resolve to continue the agitation until the internal reservation is implemented, with leaders vowing to bring the fight to the government's doorstep.

MP Prajwal Revanna To Be Sentenced In Rape Case Today
The court on Friday pronounced Revanna guilty in the obscene video and rape case. Judge Santhosh Gajanana Bhat delivered the verdict. The court is scheduled to announce the quantum of punishment on Saturday, after allowing the convict, Prajwal Revanna, and his counsel to make their final submissions on the conviction. Prajwal Revanna was produced before the court, and as soon as the verdict was pronounced, he was seen with tears in his eyes, wiping them while seated inside the courtroom. After stepping out of the court hall, he sat down in a chair in visible despair and broke down, unable to process the shock. The court deferred the judgment on July 30, citing the need for certain clarifications. After seeking inputs from both sides and issuing directions, the matter was adjourned until this day. He was arrested last year and has been in jail for 14 months. The case in question pertains to a rape complaint and other charges filed by a domestic worker from K.R. Nagar against Prajwal Revanna. The court has reviewed 26 pieces of evidence in connection with the case. Prajwal Revanna faces three other similar cases. Videos allegedly showing Prajwal Revanna sexually assaulting women and recording the acts surfaced during the 2024 Lok Sabha election period. Following this, Prajwal fled the country. A victim from Holenarasipura initially filed a police complaint against him. Upon his return to Bengaluru on May 31, 2024, he was arrested by the Bengaluru Police. His return came after public appeals from former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Prajwal was lodged in Bengaluru Central Jail, and his multiple bail pleas were outrightly rejected by all courts. One of the videos that caused widespread outrage during the election period shows the alleged sexual assault on an elderly domestic worker at a farmhouse in Holenarasipura. In the video, the woman is seen pleading with Prajwal to spare her, stating that she had served food to his father and other family elders. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) had filed cases under IPC Sections 376(2)(n) (repeated rape on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1) (unwelcome physical contact and advances, sexual demands), 354B (use of criminal force with intent to disrobe), 354C (voyeurism -- capturing images of a woman engaged in a private act without her consent), along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act. Police had collected strong evidence in this particular case. They recorded the statement of the victim, collected the samples of semen of Prajwal Revanna from the clothes of the victim, and also obtained the video of the sexual assault.
