Faridabad Dalit youth assault: Family cries foul after hospital discharges him without further treatment

The family of a Faridabad Dalit youth who was allegedly brutally assaulted and forcefully tonsured last month has claimed that he was discharged from a private hospital despite having serious injuries, including a fracture and internal bleeding, without surgery or additional treatment. 'They asked us to arrange two bottles of blood, which we did. And now, without any surgery, operation or further treatment, they discharged him, saying there is no approval (to bear the costs of treatment). How can this be?' asked Suraj, the cousin of Sahil, 18, who had to return home Thursday evening while still nursing a fracture, internal bleeding, and injury to the soft tissue in the occipital part of the brain, as documented in the discharge summary. After Suraj, 32, lodged a complaint last month, the Faridabad police arrested the 19-year-old prime accused and apprehended two of his minor accomplices. On June 26, Sahil was shifted from the Badshah Khan civil hospital to a private hospital. Faridabad district Chief Medical Officer Dr Jayant Ahuja said this was done with the family's approval for better treatment. 'The deputy commissioner and the CMO helped facilitate the transfer. But now, he has been released while still wounded and hurt,' Suraj said. The discharge summary, accessed by The Indian Express, also notes an episode of vomiting with blood, swelling across the body, high creatinine levels, anaemia and chronic kidney disease. 'He needs more intensive treatment. His ribs are also damaged. I think this might be a way to get the attempt to murder charge in the FIR dropped (by the accused with connivance of authorities),' Suraj added. When contacted, the private hospital said the teen was admitted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, and was discharged after a dialysis was carried out by the nephrology department. After Sahil had returned home limping after the assault, the family alleged the accused had hurled casteist slurs at Sahil. In his complaint, Suraj alleged the four accused 'kept the teenager hostage in a room… cut his hair, eyebrows, moustache and beard, turned him upside down and beat him with sticks and an iron rod'. The police, however, earlier said there is no caste angle. The FIR, though, invokes the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, among other charges. Sahil's family is from the Jatav caste. The medico-legal report found the teen had sustained 12 wounds, 10 of which were blunt force impact ones needing orthopaedic assessment, and two 'simple' ones caused by a sharp object.

SC grants bail to man despite murder co-accused absconding

Pune: The Supreme Court last month granted bail to Rohit Koli (35) from Ganeshnagar in Yerawada, arrested in connection with the murder of a money lender in Yerawada in 2019. The court ruled that an accused being held in Yerawada central jail cannot be denied bail if the co-accused was absconding. The Supreme Court (SC) bench comprising Justice Ujjal Bhuyan and Justice K Vinod Chandran, issued the order on June 26, stating, "Barring the co-accused, who is absconding, most of the other accused have been granted bail. We are of the view that the appellant/accused Koli cannot be denied regular bail for the conduct of the co-accused." The court noted that Koli was granted Covid bail for around two years, but he later surrendered before the jail. Even then, Koli underwent actual incarceration of more than five years. "The charges in the murder case have not been not framed, and the trial has not commenced. In such circumstances, we are of the view that a case for the grant of bail has been made out by Koli," the court observed. It ordered his release on bail on the condition to remain present for trial. Koli was released from jail on July 3. The Yerawada police had arrested Koli on January 10, 2019, with six others on the charge of fatally assaulting Sandip Deokar, a 55-year-old money lender from Yerawada, on January 6 in Khadki because of previous enmity. The prosecution had prayed to reject Koli's bail because investigations revealed that he bludgeoned Deokar with a stone (tile). Koli filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court after the Bombay high court rejected his bail plea on February 24. Lawyer Sana Raees Khan, representing Koli, argued that the inefficiency of the investigating agency to arrest the co-accused cannot be a ground to curtail the liberty of her client. Khan submitted that the information given by eyewitnesses that Koli bludgeoned the victim to death with a stone did not corroborate with the post-mortem report.

Tension grips Mandsaur as Karni Sena Parivar supporters protest FIR against neta

Indore: Tension gripped Mandsaur on Saturday when thousands of supporters of a local group, Karni Sena Parivar, surrounded the SP office to protest an FIR lodged against the group's leader, Jivan Singh Sherpur. Raising slogans and waving saffron flags, demonstrators demanded immediate withdrawal of the FIR and suspension of the policeman who registered it, while Sherpur began an indefinite strike vowing not to leave until their demands are met. A large contingent of police, backed by riot-control vehicles, sealed the area. SP Abhishek Anand told the crowd that officers were duty-bound to execute a court-issued arrest warrant against Sherpur in a case. When protestors surged toward the barricades, security forces deployed water cannons to disperse the mob, in scenes that briefly turned chaotic, forced nearby shops to down shutters. SP Anand said, "A case was registered against Sherpur and six associates on June 26 at Bhavgarh police station for demanding a monthly 'protection' payment of Rs 1 lakh from employees of a village liquor outlet, assaulting staff when they refused, and hurling caste-based slurs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Lifetime Office 365 prime software Download Undo The charges were registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and sections relating to extortion and assault." A video purportedly showing the violence surfaced the same day. He said seven suspects, including Sherpur, Pushpendra Singh, Indrapal Singh, Nagendra Singh, Kuldeep Singh, Sachin, and Devi Singh are absconding. Sherpur alone faces a dozen prior criminal cases across Mandsaur, Ratlam, and Neemuch. "Serious cases, including attempt to murder and 11 others cases have been registered against Sherpur in the past 15 years," said the SP. Speaking outside the police office, Sherpur alleged a conspiracy to brand him a criminal, insisting he knows the accused, but has no involvement in the liquor-shop attack. He said, "All the other FIRs registered against me are also false." He pledged to continue his fast until the FIR is quashed and the investigating officers suspended. But, later, police officials arrested him. During the protests, several journalists covering the demonstration were jostled, and some fell from a fire-brigade truck positioned as an improvised barricade.
