Disappointing News For ‘Game Of Thrones' Spinoff ‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms' Release Date

Forbes14-05-2025
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms
The buzz around Game Of Thrones largely fizzled with the release of its eighth and final season, which many fans justifiably disliked thanks to its rushed and messy conclusion.
House Of The Dragon helped revive some interest, but the show's drearier tone and slow pacing failed to capture the same magic of the original, and a disappointing second season left many feeling baffled and frustrated with the lack of momentum and changes from the source material. Even George R.R. Martin, the author of the books these shows are based off of, expressed his discontent with the second season, echoing and amplifying complaints from critics and fans.
Despite all of this, and despite the long wait between Martin's novels (few of us actually believe The Winds Of Winter will ever actually see publication) one of my most highly-anticipated upcoming series is yet another set in the magical land of Westeros.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms takes place between the other two shows, roughly a century before the events of Game Of Thrones. It's based on Martin's Hedge Knight novellas, which are in some ways my favorites of his books. They're shorter, less meandering, and more focused. Knight errantry, jousting, dubious heroics all make up these stories, as opposed to the sprawling epic fantasy of the main novels.
The official logline for the show reads:
'A century before the events of 'Game of Thrones,' two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.'
So it's a bit disappointing to learn that the 2025 release window for the upcoming HBO series has been pushed back to 2026. Thankfully, according to HBO chief Casey Bloys, it will be winter of 2026, so the delay is not egregious. As always, I temper my disappointment knowing that delays like this happen for a reason. I'd rather have a show release a bit later than in rough shape.
Better news is that Martin has enthusiastically endorsed this adaptation, a marked contrast with his House Of The Dragon comments. "It's as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly reasonable I am on that particular subject)," he wrote on his blog, rather cheekily.
News of the delay came via a 'first look' at A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms shown to advertisers in New York City. Hopefully we get a full trailer for the upcoming fantasy series soon. No premiere date has been set for either this or the third season of House Of The Dragon. Several other Game Of Thrones spinoffs are in the works, though details remain scarce.

Former Superman Dean Cain says 'Lois & Clark' costar Teri Hatcher cried during every flying scene: 'It hurt'

From skin-tight spandex to unforgiving wire-assisted stunts, Cain describes shooting the ABC series as a gauntlet. For four years, Dean Cain flew through the skies of Metropolis with Teri Hatcher in his arms. And Teri Hatcher was in pain each time. The former Superman recently reminisced to Variety on his time shooting the adventure comedy Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, which ran from 1993-1997 on ABC. Cain says the series "changed my life insanely," and while Lois & Clark no doubt led to exciting career opportunities and regularly produced handsome paydays for its previously small-time star, it also left other lasting effects on its stars. "There's no blood flow going to your legs. After hanging for hours, I would have to get a massage just to keep the blood moving from quadrant to quadrant," Cain recalled of the show's many scenes in which his Superman would swoop Hatcher's Lois Lane off her feet and fly, a stunt aided by unforgivingly rigid wires that would cut off Cain and Hatcher's circulation. "Teri would cry. She'd be in tears every single time we had to fly because it hurt." The pain and discomfort stopped there for Hatcher, but Cain wasn't so lucky. Reminiscing on his iconic super-suit, Cain said, "When they first brought it to me, it was this royal blue spandex bodysuit. We ended up putting in stirrups so that it stayed in place. And the boots were a whole lace-up thing at first." The 58-year-old Michigan native recalled wearing the suit on an extraordinarily hot Los Angeles day. "You can't sweat," he shared. "If you sweat, it balls up. So I didn't. I'm a Japanese dude. I don't sweat that much. I'm not hairy at all. They didn't have to shave my chest or anything. But still..."Cain has periodically revisited his Lois & Clark days over the years, remarking just in May, "Overall, it was amazing. Incredible. What a way to start a career." Cain described his working relationship with Hatcher, which was at times beset by rumors of discord, as "sometimes the greatest thing in the world and sometimes a lot more difficult... We had great chemistry. There were times where it was just the easiest thing in the world." Cain and Hatcher went their separate ways after Lois & Clark aired its final episode in June 1997. Though they've haven't since shared the screen, they have both returned to the expanded Superman screen franchise on several occasions, twice on the same program. The stars both appeared in guest roles on Smallville, the coming-of-age take on the kid from Krypton, and the CW's Supergirl, which follows Superman's similarly super-powered cousin. Cain took on a guest role in Smallville's seventh season as the immortal Dr. Curtis Knox, and appeared regularly between 2015 and 2017 on Supergirl as the titular heroine's foster dad, Jeremiah Danvers. Hatcher, meanwhile, played Ella Lane, the mother to her Lois & Clark character Lois Lane on seasons 4 and 10 of Smallville. On Supergirl, she played Queen Rhea, one of the most fearsome villains of the series' second season. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly Solve the daily Crossword

New on Apple TV Plus in August 2025 — all the shows and movies to watch

Summer is just flying by, and a new month is almost here. That means Apple TV Plus (along with the rest of the best streaming services) is rolling out a new selection of movies and TV shows to celebrate the beginning of August. This month brings several high-profile returning favorites to the streamer, like the explosive third season of sci-fi drama "Invasion" and the beloved comedy series "Platonic" starring two of Hollywood's most likable comedic talents, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. That being said, there's also an epic new historical drama starring Jason Momoa that looks like a must-watch for fans of "Game of Thrones" and Shogun." Whether you're looking for family-friendly entertainment or want to put on something made strictly for adults, Apple TV Plus has plenty of options arriving this month. You can find more info about all the new Apple TV Plus releases coming your way in August 2025 below. Billed as a "passion project" for co-creators Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett (who share native Hawaiian heritage), "Chief of War" tells the real-life-inspired story of Hawaii's unification on the cusp of the 19th century, during a period of looming colonization. It promises to be an epic historical drama that sheds light on a chapter of history often overlooked by Western media. Told from an indigenous perspective, the series centers on Kaʻiana (Momoa), a fierce warrior and noble, who returns home only to get swept into a brutal campaign to unite the islands against the foreign threat. The cast is predominantly Polynesian, and much of the dialogue is in 'Ōlelo Hawai'i, lending the show a level of cultural authenticity rarely seen in historical dramas. Following its two-episode premiere on August 1, "Chief of War' will release every Friday through September 19. Muth's acclaimed "Zen" books, is back to teach kids more important lessons about mindfulness. Each episode blends everyday childhood challenges with mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and calm storytelling — an approach that has earned the series both a Peabody and a Daytime Emmy Award. "Stillwater" follows the titular wise panda (voiced by James Sie), who teaches three young siblings, Addy (Eva Ariel Binder), Michael (Tucker Chandler), and Karl (Judah Mackey), how to navigate everyday challenges and better understand their emotions. Through his example, stories, and gentle humor, Stillwater offers children tools to grow with empathy and resilience. Watch on Apple TV Plus from August 1 "Platonic's" first season earned this hit character-driven comedy a spot on our best Apple TV Plus shows list. Season 2 promises more laugh-out-loud moments with two of Hollywood's most effortlessly charming comedic talents, Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne. It follows two long-estranged besties, Sylvia (Byrne) and Will (Rogen), who reconnect over their shared midlife crises — much to the discomfort of everyone around them. After his messy divorce in season 1, Will enters a new relationship that threatens to throw the duo's already-fragile dynamic off balance. Determined not to let their friendship derail this time, they attempt to reel in their chaos and start doing more "normal" adult activities. Of course, for these two codependent idiots, that's easier said than done. Watch on Apple TV Plus from August 6 Apple's expansive sci-fi drama "Invasion" returns for season 3 this month, and war has officially arrived. It's all been leading up to this. Previous seasons showed an alien invasion unfold through the perspectives of ordinary people across the globe, each scrambling to survive as society unravels. In season 3, those perspectives collide for the first time as full-scale war erupts. Humanity's only hope to repel the alien threat is if everyone comes together. The international cast of characters we've met thus far pool their expertise to unite as an elite incursion unit on a high-stakes mission to infiltrate the looming alien mothership. As new bonds are formed and relationships tested, the survivors must learn to work as a team before time runs out or humanity's doomed. Watch on Apple TV Plus from August 22 Another show for the little ones, the award-winning"Shape Island" returns with more imaginative adventures in season 2. Based on the beloved books "Shapes" picture book trilogy by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen, this stop-motion animated series follows the aptly named Square, Triangle, and Circle. The trio embarks on adventures, solves puzzles, and builds their friendship — all while learning to understand and appreciate each other's differences. Because, as we all know, friendship comes in every shape and size. Season two features the returning voices of Yvette Nicole Brown ('Frog and Toad') as the narrator, Harvey Guillén ('Puss in Boots: The Last Wish') as Square, Scott Adsit ('Big Hero 6') as Triangle, and Gideon Adlon ('Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths') as Circle. Jason Momoa Prefers to Be Called a ‘Sensitive Alpha Male'

You will want to know what it feels like to be pulled by the strong hands of Jason Momoa from the cyan waters of the Pacific and then to flop, into the belly of a canoe, like some recently netted fish. It feels, I can tell you, wonderful. This was on a paradisiacal morning in mid-July, just off the Western coast of Oahu. From the wing of a bright orange outrigger canoe, Momoa, casual in a sleeveless shirt and striped pants, like a god on holiday, pointed out the beach where he had learned to surf, the reef where his umbilical cord is buried. His father, Joseph Momoa, lay beside him, cradling an enormous conch shell. 'Aloha, what's up, my boy?' Joseph said. 'What's up, Pops?' his son answered as the canoe sped through the water. 'This is awesome.' In mellow moments like these, I could almost forget the primal horror of sitting in a swimsuit next to a man who often tops most-handsome lists. A waterman in the canoe's stern gestured toward a cove famous for Galápagos sharks, and then suggested we take a dip. Most days, I avoid shark-infested seas. But Momoa, 45, seemed unconcerned. I jumped in. Built like a boulder, if boulders had bedroom eyes and smelled of musk and adventure, Momoa is a bruiser with a difference. Though undeniably an action star — he has played an alien, a barbarian, a warlord in 'Game of Thrones,' a swordmaster in the 'Dune' movies, a superhero who could absolutely crush a freestyle relay in 'Aquaman' — he pairs hypermasculinity with surprising sweetness. 'The thing that makes him an interesting actor is his enormous heart and empathy — all in the body of a Trojan god,' Emilia Clarke, who played his bride on the HBO megahit 'Game of Thrones,' would later tell me in an email. (Asked about the first time they met, Clarke wrote: 'I remember it vividly! He wrestled me to the ground in the foyer of the Fitzwilliam Hotel in Belfast screaming 'WIFEY!!!'') Want all of The Times?
