The Vietnam War was nothing if not loaded with ironies at every conceivable level. The lowest-ranking Medal of Honor recipient in the U.S. Air Force was a case in point: John Lee Levitow's ultimate moment of truth was less attributable to enemy forces than it was to his own ammunition — in particular, a loose, live flare capable of subjecting him and his crew mates to a fiery death.
Levitow was born on Nov. 1, 1945, in Hartford, Connecticut. His ambitions progressed from civil engineering to the U.S. Navy and finally, on June 6, 1966, enlistment in the U.S. Air Force.
After training at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, and serving in a number of stateside units, Levitow was assigned in July 1968 to the 3rd Special Operations Squadron at Nha Trang, South Vietnam, as the loadmaster aboard a Douglas AC-47.
Based on the near-immortal C-47 twin-engine transport of World War II, the AC-47 was converted to a gunship.
Additionally, the aircraft carried parachute flares to light up the battlefield in support of ground forces.
Because its operations were carried out principally by night, the AC-47 was known as 'Spooky,' but was also widely known as 'Puff the Magic Dragon' after the Peter, Paul and Mary song.
On the night of Feb. 24, 1969, Airman 1st Class Levitow was serving as the loadmaster aboard an AC-47, codename 'Spooky 71,' as it patrolled the night sky around Tan Son Nhut Air Base when a call came in that the U.S. Army post at Long Binh was under attack.
Hastening to the area, the plane's pilot, Maj. Kenneth Carpenter, put the plane into a banked turn while Levitow set the ejection and ignition timers on a flare before passing it to a gunner, Airman 1st Class Ellis Owen.
As Carpenter turned around for a second firing pass, however, an enemy mortar team landed a shell on the plane's right wing.
The results, as described in Levitow's Medal of Honor citation, were devastating:
'The resulting explosion ripped a hole 3 feet, 1/4 inches in diameter through the wing along with more than 3,500 holes in the fuselage. All occupants in the cargo compartment were wounded and slammed against the floor and fuselage. The explosion ripped an activated flare from the grasp of a crew member who had been launching … flares to provide illumination for Army ground troops engaged in combat.'
Levitow suffered 40 fragment wounds in his back and legs but recovered enough to crawl across the cargo area, grab a crew member and drag him away from the open cargo door.
No sooner had Levitow got the airman to relative safety, however, than he saw smoke curling up from the flare storage. He realized that when the flare was jarred from the airman's hand, it had been thrown back across the cargo area and was set to explode soon.
Levitow crawled up the cargo floor to reach the live flare. After rolling from his grasp several times, Levitow finally secured the flare and, holding it under his body, crawled back to throw it out the open cargo door.
The flare barely cleared the airplane when it exploded, just far enough away to spare the aircraft and its crew from destruction.
As Carpenter brought his battered aircraft down at an emergency airstrip at Bien Hoa, Levitow logged his 181st combat mission.
After his release from the hospital, Levitow would fly 20 more such missions before being honorably discharged in 1970.
On May 14, 1970, Levitow was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard Nixon, the first enlisted member of the Air Force to receive the award.
Levitow went on to serve more than 20 years in the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs.
Levitow died of cancer in Glastonbury, Connecticut, on Nov. 8, 2000. His remains are interred in Arlington National Cemetery.

A famed Japanese destroyer lost in 1942 has been found severed on the South Pacific seafloor — the result of a fantastic David-vs.-Goliath sea battle that remains the stuff of legend for the U.S. Navy. The Imperial Japanese Navy destroyer Teruzuki was discovered July 10, at a depth of 2,624 feet in the Solomon Islands, the Ocean Exploration Trust reported in a July 12 news release. Among the revelations made by a remotely operated camera: the 440-foot-long ship was split, with its stern hitting the seafloor 656 feet away from the hull, the trust noted. And even after 83 years, the wreck remains armed with highly volatile munitions, scientists noted. 'When the exploration team found a 19-meter-long (62-feet) severed segment of Teruzuki's stern littered with depth charges, it disproved a long-held theory that it was depth charge explosions that sealed the ship's fate,' the trust said in its release. The ship's forward artillery turrets remain pointing skyward, which proved to be the wrong direction, historians say. To slay a giant The Teruzuki was massive, stretching nearly 100 feet longer than a football field, yet its demise was dealt Dec. 12, 1942, by two U.S. Navy PT boats that were scarcely 77 feet long, historians say. A retelling of the sinking by the U.S. Naval Institute notes the PT-boats were firing their torpedoes at 'shadows in the murk,' and only later realized it was the flagship of Rear Admiral Raizo Tanaka — known to historians as 'Tenacious Tanaka' due to 'his courage in leading nighttime attacks.' 'They heard a tremendous roar as thousands of pounds of water soared skyward,' the institute reports. 'One of their torpedoes had struck home near the aft of the ship, immediately rendering the Teruzuki unnavigable and throwing Tanaka himself unconscious to the deck. ... The whole scene (was) bathed in an orange glow as leaking fuel on the Teruzuki ignited, illuminating the crippled Japanese ship for miles.' The fire eventually reached powder magazines and the Teruzuki 'buckled under a massive explosion' and sank around 4:40 a.m., the institute says. Most of the crew was rescued by nearby Japanese ships. Historians credit the sinking to PT-37 and PT-40, which escaped before nearby Japanese ships could return fire. 'In just a few minutes' time, they had felled the single largest warship sunk by any PT boat during the war,' the institute reports. Finding history The location of Teruzuki was discovered by coincidence, when an uncrewed seafloor mapping vessel spotted evidence of something the size of a ship, the trust says. Scientists sent a remotely operated vehicle to investigate and found a 'never-before-seen ship' that was heavily damaged and deteriorating. It was identified with the help of a Japanese researcher on the team, Hiroshi Ishii, of the Center for Southeast Asian Area Studies at Kyoto University in Japan. Video recorded at the wreck is helping WWII historians rewrite the ship's final hours, the trust says. 'Japanese naval vessel plans were kept highly secret during the war, so much so that no historical images of Teruzuki exist today,' the researchers said. 'This survey is the first ever look at the vessel for this generation.' The find was made as part of a 21-day expedition in the Iron Bottom Sound that is documenting known WWII wrecks and investigating sites that are suspected to be undiscovered military boats and planes. Teruzuki is the 12th wreck to be explored during the expedition, which is broadcasting its dives live via Five major naval battles were staged in the Iron Bottom Sound region in late 1942, resulting 'in the loss of over 20,000 lives, 111 naval vessels, and 1,450 planes,' the trust says. 'To date, fewer than 100 of these US, Japanese, Australian, and New Zealand military ships and planes have been located,' trust officials said.

According to the Department of Energy, you should look for fans with the Energy Star label, as they're around 60% more efficient than conventional fans. You'll also want to ensure the fan you're using is the correct size for your room. Larger rooms may need bigger fans with blade spans of at least 52 inches or more, while smaller rooms can get by using fans of 36 inches. If changing your fan blades' direction becomes a pain, you might consider installing a ceiling fan with a remote control or implementing a smart switch. This makes it easier to change the fan direction and speed without reaching up, using a ladder, or fumbling around for the switch to push. The easier it is to change the fan blades' rotation, the easier it is for you to be cooler or warmer in uncomfortable temperatures.
