Death toll from Algeria stadium fall rises to four
The number of spectators killed after falling from an upper stand of a stadium following MC Alger's victory in the Algerian top-flight league has risen to four, the champions said on Monday.
The fourth fan has died in hospital, where he was being treated for injuries sustained in the incident on June 21, the Algerian club posted on Facebook.
One spectator had died at the scene in the 5 July Stadium, in the capital Algiers, local authorities said, and the Algerian health ministry said two more had died from their injuries the following day.
Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV's Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsing onto the lower tier. REUTERS

Three dead, 35 injured in Ukrainian strike on factory in Russia's Izhevsk, governor says
Three dead, 35 injured in Ukrainian strike on factory in Russia's Izhevsk, governor says MOSCOW - Three people were killed and 35 others injured in a Ukrainian drone strike on a factory in the Russian city of Izhevsk, regional governor Alexander Brechalov on his Telegram channel on Tuesday. Brechalov did not name the targeted facility, but a Ukrainian security official earlier told Reuters that at least two long-range drones operated by the Security Service of Ukraine struck the Kupol plant, which manufactures drones and air defenсe systems, and caused a fire. A column of black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the site of a fire at a cluster of buildings in videos shared by the Ukrainian official who said the plant's production facilities and warehouses had been hit. Reuters could not independently verify the claim. Brechalov said he had he informed Russian President Vladimir Putin about the incident. Kupol is a research and development enterprise and part of the state-owned Almaz-Antey defense conglomerate. Izhevsk is also home to the world-renowned Kalashnikov defense manufacturing concern. 92-year-old UK man sentenced to life over 1967 murder
Ryland Headley was convicted of raping and killing 75-year-old Louisa Dunne after breaking into her house nearly 60 years ago. PHOTO: AFP LONDON - A 92-year-old British man was on July 1 jailed for life for a 1967 rape and murder, in the UK's oldest solved cold case. Ryland Headley, who was convicted of raping and killing 75-year-old Louisa Dunne after breaking into her house nearly 60 years ago, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 20 years at Bristol Crown Court in south-west England. After passing sentence, Judge Derek Sweeting told Headley: 'You will never be released, you will die in prison.' He said that Headley, who was 34 at the time of the crime, had 'violated the sanctity and safety of Mrs Dunne's home where she had every right to feel secure'. 'She must have experienced considerable pain and fear before her death.' The judge mentioned Headley's previous convictions for breaking into the homes of two elderly widows in 1977 and raping them. He was initially sentenced to life in jail for those convictions, which was later reduced to seven years on appeal. They showed a 'chilling pattern of behaviour', the judge added. Police reopened Ms Dunne's case in 2023 and matched DNA from the victim's skirt and other items from the original probe to Headley, who spent around two years in prison sentence for his 1977 crimes. Doughty Street Chambers, the legal team representing Headley, said it was Britain's oldest cold case murder – an unsolved case for which new information emerges. Italian Cocciaretto stuns Pegula in big Wimbledon upset
Tennis - Wimbledon - All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 1, 2025 Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto in action during her first round match against Jessica Pegula of the U.S. REUTERS/Andrew Couldridge LONDON - Fresh off a title in Bad Homburg and tipped for a deep run at Wimbledon, world number three Jessica Pegula crashed out in the first round on Tuesday, stunned 6-2 6-3 by unheralded Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto. It was a meek surrender from Pegula, who looked subdued from the start on Court Two. She landed only half her first serves, struck a mere five winners and sprayed 24 unforced errors in a display more tentative than tenacious. Cocciaretto, meanwhile, kept her composure and her smile. The world number 116 was rock-solid throughout, breaking the American four times and exacting revenge for her straight-sets defeat at Wimbledon two years ago. It marked only the second top-10 win of Cocciaretto's career, but was thoroughly deserved. "Playing on this court is a dream for me," she said.
