SpaceX Starship Spins Out After Successful Launch, But It Didn't Explode This Time
Starship is SpaceX's next-generation rocket and the largest one ever designed. If it ever reaches the same reliability for regular use as the long-running Falcon 9, it will have the ability to transport between 100 and 200 tonnes into low Earth orbit. Unfortunately, 2025 has seen Starship stumble, with two out of three launches ending in catastrophic explosions of the new Block 2 booster design, for various reasons.
SpaceX will be largely happy with this latest launch, then, despite the problems it faced. The first stage booster completed its burn successfully and separated without issue. While the first-stage booster turned and began its burn back toward the launchpad for an intended splashdown landing, the Starship upper stage continued on, burning for a few more minutes to achieve "nominal orbital insertion."
Unfortunately, that's when some issues cropped up. Initially, the cargo bay doors failed to open, so the dummy Starlink satellites couldn't be deployed. And then SpaceX lost control of the spacecraft.
"Leaks caused loss of main tank pressure during the coast and reentry phase," SpaceX CEO Elon Musk explained on Twitter/X. This loss of tank pressure meant that the Starship team lost the ability to control the ship's attitude, which led to the upper stage entering an uncontrolled spin.
This meant that the Starship wasn't going to be able to hold its orbit, and a decision was made to bring it down as carefully as possible. All remaining fuel was vented and at around 46 minutes into its flight, Starship went dark and broke up into pieces over the Indian Ocean, as per Ars Technica. This was at least in its intended flight path, however, so there should be no danger of damage to human life or property due to falling debris.
That wasn't the end to the launch woes, though. The first-stage booster also suffered an unknown issue, exploding soon after igniting its engines again for re-entry. That brought an explosive end to the first re-used Starship booster.
SpaceX has announced plans to continue with launches of one Starship every three to four weeks for the rest of the year, with plans to introduce a new Block 3 design before the end of 2025 with greater lift capacity, and a new Raptor engine with greater reliability.

Photograph:A local health department in Memphis has granted Elon Musk's xAI data center an air permit to continue operating the gas turbines that power the company's Grok chatbot. The permit comes amid widespread community opposition and a looming lawsuit alleging the company violated the Clean Air Act. The Shelby County Health Department released its air permit for the xAI project Wednesday, after receiving hundreds of public comments. The news was first reported by the Daily Memphian. In June, the Memphis Chamber of Commerce announced that xAI had chosen a site in Memphis to build its new supercomputer. The company's website boasts that it was able to build the supercomputer, Colossus, in just 122 days. That speed was due in part to the mobile gas turbines the company quickly began installing at the campus, the site of a former manufacturing facility. Colossus allowed xAI to quickly catch up to rivals OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in building cutting-edge artificial intelligence. It was built using 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, making it likely the world's largest supercomputer. xAI's Memphis campus is located in a predominantly Black community known as Boxtown which has been historically burdened with industrial projects that cause pollution. Gas turbines like the ones xAI is using in Memphis can be a significant source of harmful emissions, like nitrogen oxides, which create smog. Memphis already has some of the highest child asthma rates in Tennessee. Since xAI began running its turbines, residents have repeatedly met and rallied against the project. 'My neighbors and I are forced to breathe the pollution this company pumps into our air every day. We smell it. We inhale it. This isn't just an environmental issue — it's a public health emergency,' wrote State Rep. Justin Pearson, who grew up near Boxtown, in an MSNBC op-ed last week. Under the Clean Air Act, 'major' sources of emissions—like a cluster of gas turbines—need a permit, known as a Prevention of Significant Deterioration (PSD) permit. However, Shelby County Health Department officials told local reporters in August that this wasn't necessary for xAI since its turbines weren't designed to be permanent. Amid mounting local opposition, xAI finally applied for a permit with the Shelby County Health Department in January, months after it first began running the turbines. Last month, the NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) announced that they intended to sue xAI for violating the Clean Air Act. 'xAI's decision to install and operate dozens of polluting gas turbines without any permits or public oversight is a clear violation of the Clean Air Act,' said senior SELC attorney Patrick Anderson in a press release. 'Over the last year, these turbines have pumped out pollution that threatens the health of Memphis families. This notice paves the way for a lawsuit that can hold xAI accountable for its unlawful refusal to get permits for its gas turbines.' The new permit from the health department allows the company to operate 15 turbines on the site until 2027. In June, Memphis mayor Paul Young wrote an op-ed in the Tennessee Commercial Appeal that noted xAI was currently operating 21 turbines. SELC says that aerial footage it took in April, however, showed as many as 35 turbines operating at the site. xAI did not immediately respond to WIRED's request for comment, including questions about how many turbines it is currently operating at the facility. Shelby County did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In May, Sharon Wilson, a certified optical gas imaging thermographer, traveled to Memphis to film emissions from the site with a special optical gas imaging camera that records usually-invisible emissions. Wilson tracks leaks from facilities in the Permian Basin, one of the world's most prolific oil and gas-producing regions, in Texas. She alleged to WIRED that what she saw in Memphis was one of the densest clouds of emissions she'd ever seen. 'I expected to see the typical power plant type of pollution that I see,' she says. OpenAI condemns Robinhood's ‘OpenAI tokens'

Robinhood says the launch represents an attempt to give everyday people exposure to equity in the world's most valuable private companies via blockchain. Hours after announcing these token sales, Robinhood's stock price shot to an all-time high. But stock in private companies like OpenAI and SpaceX are not available to the public. That's what makes them private. They sell shares to investors of their choosing. So OpenAI is openly disavowing Robinhood's effort. They are ownership in a vehicle that owns the shares. In one way or another, Robinhood seems to be tying the price of its new tokenized product to the OpenAI shares in that SPV. But shares prices in an SPV can also differ from prices of an actual share of stock, as well. OpenAI declined to comment further. Robinhood did not respond to TechCrunch's additional questions about its SPV. Private companies are known to push back against anything that could influence how their equity is valued. In recent months, humanoid robotics startup Figure AI sent cease-and-desist letters to two brokers running secondary markets that were marketing the company's stock. Of course, these situations are different, but most startups don't want people to believe that they've authorized share sales if they haven't.

Climate satellite MethaneSAT backed by Bezos and Google fails in space after just 1 year

One of the most advanced satellites for tracking harmful greenhouse gas emissions has died in space. MethaneSAT, built and operated by the nonprofit Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), was launched in March of 2024 as part of SpaceX's Transporter-10 mission. The spacecraft was designed to pinpoint methane hotspots across the globe — specifically, those created by oil and gas production — and provide freely accessible data analytics about specific emission sources. Now, after a year of collecting that data, the satellite is no longer operational. "On Friday, June 20, the MethaneSAT mission operations lost contact with MethaneSAT. After pursuing all options to restore communications, we learned this morning that the satellite has lost power, and that it is likely not recoverable," EDF said in a statement on Tuesday (July 1). Though invisible, methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases. Methane molecules absorb infrared radiation very efficiently, trapping 20 to 30 times more heat in Earth's atmosphere when compared to carbon dioxide. Fossil fuel production and industrial waste are some of the highest human-related contributors of methane into the atmosphere. That methane then hovers in Earth's troposphere — about five to nine miles (eight to 15 kilometers) in altitude — like a warm coat around the planet. "MethaneSAT is specifically designed to catalyze methane reductions by creating unprecedented transparency," the mission's website states. EDF lists 10 mission partners credited with bringing the $88 million satellite to fruition, including BAE Systems, Harvard University, the New Zealand Space Agency, Bezos Earth Fund, Google and more. Though MethaneSAT is now out of service, mission operators say they're still committed to turning the data they were able to collect into actionable results. "We will continue to process data that we have retrieved from the satellite and will be releasing additional scenes of global oil and gas production region-scale emissions over the coming months," EDT officials said.
