SEOUL – North Korea opened a massive resort area on its east coast, state media said on July 2, with the tourism pet project of leader Kim Jong Un reportedly set to welcome Russian guests later in July.
Dubbed 'North Korea's Waikiki' by South Korean media, the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area can accommodate nearly 20,000 people, according to Pyongyang, which previously described it as 'a world-class cultural resort'.
Mr Kim showed a keen interest in developing North Korea's tourism industry during his early years in power, analysts have said, and the coastal resort area was a particular focus.
The tourist zone opened to domestic visitors on July 1, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported, publishing images of tourists in colourful swimsuits enjoying the beach.
North Koreans of all ages from across the country flocked to the site this week 'filled with joy at experiencing a new level of civilisation', KCNA reported.
The visitors were 'astonished by the grandeur and splendor of the tourist city, where more than 400… artistically designed buildings lined the white sandy beach in ideal harmony', it added.
According to South Korea's Yonhap news agency, a group of Russian tourists
is set to visit the zone in North Korea for the first time on July 7.

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which manages relations with the North, said the site's operations are 'expected to gradually expand', including to Russian tourists.
Mr Kim said last week the construction of the site would go down as 'one of the greatest successes this year', and that the North would build more large-scale tourist zones 'in the shortest time possible'.
Previously released images showed him sitting in a chair, alongside his teenage daughter Ju Ae and wife Ri Sol Ju, watching a man flying off a water slide in the resort.
Limited tourism
But given the limited capacity of available flights, international tourism to the new beach resort is 'likely to remain small in scale', according to the Unification Ministry.
'It is estimated that tourists will travel via Pyongyang, and that the number of visitors may be limited to around 170 people per day,' the ministry said.
North Korea sees tourism as a key source of foreign currency, it said, and Pyongyang may have received aid to complete the site from Russia in exchange for
joining its war in Ukraine .
The nuclear-armed North reopened its borders in August 2023 after almost four years, having closed them because of the Covid-19 pandemic, during which even its own nationals were prevented from entering.

But foreign tourism was limited even before the pandemic, with tour companies saying around 5,000 Western tourists visited each year. Significantly more Chinese tourists were allowed at the time.
The impoverished country's political, military and cultural ties with Russia have deepened since Moscow's
invasion of Ukraine in 2022 .
In 2024, the North permitted Russian tourists to return for the first time since the pandemic, and Western tour operators briefly returned in February. No Chinese tourists are known to have returned to the country.
A tourist train between Rason – home to North Korea's first legal marketplace – and Russia's Vladivostok resumed in May, according to an official from the Unification Ministry.
Americans made up about 20 per cent of the market before Washington banned travel following the imprisonment and subsequent death of American student Otto Warmbier.
Hundreds of thousands of South Koreans also used to visit Mount Kumgang near the inter-Korean border every year, travelling to a Seoul-funded tourist resort that was the first major cooperation project between the neighbours.
The trips came to an abrupt end in 2008 when a North Korean soldier shot dead a South Korean tourist who strayed off the approved path, and Seoul suspended travel. AFP

REUTERS/Luisa Gonzalez/File Photo BOGOTA - Colombian police have captured a fugitive accused of involvement in last month's attack on Senator Miguel Uribe, a potential presidential candidate, two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Saturday, marking the fifth arrest in the case. Elder Jose Arteaga, known as El Costeño, was arrested on suspicion of inducing the 15-year-old charged with shooting the politician at a rally in Colombia's capital Bogota on June 7 to commit the crime, the sources said. Arteaga, who the two sources said has a long criminal record, was detained in a neighborhood in western Bogota, a day after Colombian police said Interpol issued a red notice for his arrest. Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana said in a post on social media on Friday that Arteaga was wanted for "aggravated attempted homicide; manufacture, trafficking and carrying of firearms or ammunition; and use of minors for the commission of crimes." Uribe - a 39-year-old presidential pre-candidate for the conservative opposition Democratic Center party - was shot twice in the head and once in his left leg, according to state prosecutors. He has undergone several serious surgeries since the attack, which left him in critical condition. The 15-year-old alleged shooter was arrested minutes after the attack, and three others have since been arrested. REUTERS

Ukraine's top general warns of possible new Russian offensive in northeast

REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko/File Photo KYIV - Ukraine's top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi warned on Saturday of a possible new Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region, a part of northeastern Ukraine which has seen heavy fighting since Russia invaded in 2022. Moscow has been slowly grinding its way through Ukrainian lines along several parts of the frontline this summer, throwing forth continuous waves of infantry as it seeks to press home its advantage in men and munitions. Russian forces have already pushed into northern Ukraine's Sumy region over the past months, carving out a small foothold there. "I dedicated two days to working with units in Kharkiv region," Syrskyi wrote in a post on the Telegram app. He said he spent the time talking to commanders, studying the situation in the area and the needs of troops there. "The Russians are looking to press with numbers, but we have to be ready, use appropriate tactical and technological solutions not to allow the (Russians) to move forward," Syrskyi said. REUTERS

Sputnik/Vyacheslav Prokofyev/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Russian air defences shot down four Ukrainian drones headed for Moscow on Saturday, the city's mayor said, while one of the capital's main airports temporarily halted outgoing flights. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said emergency services were working at the sites of the downed drones, but gave no information on potential damage. The Defence Ministry said 94 drones had been destroyed over Russia overnight on Saturday and 45 more between 0800 MSK (0400 GMT) and 1350 MSK. Outgoing flights at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport were temporarily paused on Saturday before they were later lifted, Russia's Rosaviatsia aviation authority said, citing "restrictions" over the capital's airspace as well as strong winds. Rosaviatsia said incoming and outgoing flights at airports in several other Russian cities were also temporarily halted, including at St Petersburg's Pulkovo airport, citing safety concerns. REUTERS
