IMD predicts heavy rains in Mumbai; police urge public to stay indoors
Mumbai, Jul 25 (PTI) Heavy rains lashed Mumbai on Friday morning, slowing down vehicular traffic and affecting some suburban train services on the Western Railway, officials said. More showers are expected later in the day, they said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted 'heavy to very heavy" rains in the metropolis during the 24 hours starting 8.30 am, prompting the police to appeal to the public not to venture out.
The IMD has already issued an 'Orange' alert for Mumbai and all its neighbouring districts, barring Raigad, where a 'Red' alert has been sounded for Friday.
Though it had issued a similar alert on Thursday, the city received moderate rainfall.
As per a 'Monsoon Report' of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the island city, Eastern suburbs, and Western suburbs have so far received an average rainfall of 29.40 mm, 29.44 mm and 18.88 mm, respectively.
IMD's Colaba and Santacruz observatories recorded 22.4 mm and 23.9 mm rainfall, respectively.
Due to the rains since morning, with intense spells in between, vehicle movements on the city roads have slowed down.
Suburban train services on the Central Railway network were running without any problem, said officials. A few locals on the Western Railway network were running 10-15 minutes late, said WR officials.
In view of the forecast for heavy rains in Mumbai and neighbouring districts, police have urged citizens to take precautions.
'Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai and nearby districts, citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously," said Mumbai police on X.
'Our officials and staff are on high alert and ready to assist Mumbaikars. In case of any emergency, please dial 100 / 112 / 103," they said. PTI KK DC NR

Maximum temperature goes up by 5°C in Gurgaon, more rain likely
Gurgaon: The city woke up to overcast skies as India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a "yellow alert" for heavy showers from Aug 1 to 5 in isolated parts of Haryana. A western disturbance is also present at higher altitudes (around 5.8km), aligned along 72°E north of latitude 32°N," the official added. "These overlapping systems are likely to trigger recurrent spells of rain, especially in southern and eastern Haryana," an official with IMD Chandigarh said. "Urban areas like Gurgaon could see waterlogging and localised flooding if the showers intensify," they added. Until 5.30 pm, Safdarjung, the base station logged 4.6 mm of rainfall, while Lodhi Road recorded 4.2 mm, Ayanagar 11 mm, Pragati Maidan 3.2 mm, Pusa 0.5 mm, and Najafgarh 2.5 mm of rainfall. Palam and Ridge stations saw traces of rainfall. Rainfall is classified as light when it is up to 15.5 mm, moderate when it is between 15.6 and 64.4 mm, heavy when between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm, and very heavy when it is over 115.5 mm in a 24-hour window. A day earlier, some parts of the city logged heavy to moderate rain, with Palam recording 79 mm and Safdarjung 16.8 mm.

Rain, landslides disrupt Himachal roads; highways shut, 291 routes blocked
Rain-induced floods and landslides blocked several road stretches in Himachal Pradesh on Friday. Long traffic snarls followed, after stranded vehicles queued up on either side of the road. (PTI) The Chandigarh-Manali and Manali-Leh national highways were closed for vehicular traffic, causing inconvenience to commuters and leading to traffic snarls. A taxi driver from Chandigarh, identified as Jai Kishan, sustained injuries and his vehicle was damaged in a landslide at Kainch Mor near Pandoh dam in Mandi district. A stretch of the Shivabadar Road caved in, blocking the Chandigarh-'Manali NH 21 and cutting off road connectivity to the Shivabadar village completely. Long traffic snarls followed, after stranded vehicles queued up on either side of the road. Vehicles were being stopped at Pandoh dam as a precautionary measure. Men and machinery were rushed to the spot, but intermittent rains obstructed the restoration work. One-way traffic would be restored Mandi Superintendent of Police Sakshi Verma said one-way traffic would be restored as soon as the rains stop. The Manali-Leh NH 3 was closed at Jispa in Lahaul and Spiti district as floods in Masheran nallah scattered big rocks and debris on the road, the videos of which have gone viral. Banjar received 52.4 mm rainfall, Bharari 45.2 mm, Murari Devi 43 mm, Kothi 40 mm, Naina Devi 36 mm, Jot 35 mm, Amb 32.6 mm, Sarahan 30 mm and Chamba 29 mm. A total of 291 roads, including 171 roads in the disaster-hit Mandi district, were closed on Thursday evening, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). It said 416 power distribution transformers and 219 water supply schemes were affected across the state. 95 people have died in rain-related incidents From the onset of monsoon in the state on June 20 to July 31, the state has suffered losses to the tune of ₹1,626 crore. So far, 95 people have died and 36 have gone missing in rain-related incidents, while 1,472 houses have been fully or partially damaged. The state witnessed 44 flash floods, 27 cloudbursts and 40 major landslides during this period, officials said.

Delhi experiences high humidity as light rain brings no relief
Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Despite a spell of light rain, high humidity persisted in the national capital on Friday. Relative humidity levels oscillated between 90 and 91 per cent, making the air heavy and uncomfortable for much of the day. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature settled at 33.3 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 24 degrees Celsius, three notches below the seasonal average. Rainfall activity was limited, with the Safdarjung observatory recording 17 mm precipitation in the 24 hours till Friday evening. Despite the cloudy sky, there was no major downpour. The IMD has predicted a generally cloudy sky with chances of moderate rain on Saturday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 35 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively, it said. According to CPCB, an AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 to 100 'satisfactory', 101 to 200 'moderate', 201 to 300 'poor', 301 to 400 'very poor', and 401 to 500 'severe'.
