Pulasa fish arrives in Godavari: A seasonal delicacy faces threat from overfishing

RAJAHMUNDRY: As the flood water entering the river Godavari, the highly prized fish, Pulasa started to enter the river from the sea for breeding. It is most sought after seasonal delicacy which is available between July to September. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The fish is known for its unique taste, tender flesh, and rich flavour, attributed to the pristine water of Godavari river and rich diet of the fish. There is saying that people even sell Mangala Sutram (A thread is knotted around the bride's neck and is worn by her for the remainder of her marriage) to taste Pulasa fish. The first Pulasa of this season was trapped in the net of fishermen Gouthami Godavari branch of Godavari in the Union Territory of Yanam. The auction was held at the Pushkar ghat. A local fisherwoman, Ponnamanda Ratnam purchased the fish at hefty price of Rs 15,000. There is no boundary for the happiness of fishermen as the flow of Pulasa fish has begun early and they are hopeful of getting richer by this famous fish. Now a day, the Pulasa fish is becoming rare commodity due to over exploitation. The fish will get tasty and health after eating plankton which are a diverse group of organisms that live in aquatic environments and they are abundant at estuarines. Aster consuming the plankton, Pulasa will become rich in omega algae oil and strong. The fish will become tastier by the distance it travels from the sea into the river for reproduction. Pulasa with more roe(fish eggs) will be more testier and also costlier. Most of the people mad about the Pulasa with more eggs and they pay any amount to get it. Talking to the TOI, In-Charge Joint Director, Fisheries, Konaseema, L.B.S Vardhan said that said that the number of Pulasa is dwindling due to over exploitation for the sake of money. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said the fishwermen are after the prized fish from Yanam which is near the sea mouth. Later, the fish is being caught at Kotipalli and Dowllaiswaram barrage. He observed that the reproduction of Pulasa will be concluded successfully after it travels much distance and the new breed of fish will be strong and great in number. Unfortunately, the journey of this legendary fish is coming to an end abruptly and most of the fish are not lucky enoud to swim back to the Bay of Bengal. Why the Pulasa fish only confined to river Godavari only. The answer is no other river Krishna will not get that much of flood waters at the sea mouth.

Chinese Man Buys Coffin For Alive Mother, Hires People To Carry It Home. Here's Why

Last Updated: A man in Hunan, China, bought a coffin for his 70-year-old mother, hiring 16 men to carry it home for good fortune. In an unusual display of filial piety, a man in China's Hunan province drew a widespread attention online after he bought a coffin for his 70-year-old alive mother to sit in and hired 16 men to carry it from the shop to his home. The unnamed man, a resident of Shuangxikou Town in Taoyuan County, Changde, Hunan Province in southern China, reportedly undertook the act in the belief that doing so would bring his mother's good fortune and long life. The video of the gesture, widely shared on Chinese social media platform Douyin, showed the cheerful elderly woman sitting inside the coffin holding a fan and the men carried it in a procession, South China Morning Post reported. A brass band played ahead of the procession, which attracted a large crowd of curious onlookers. After reaching home, a traditional ceremony with incense and offerings was held. A villager said he had seen such events three times before. 'The core idea is to express filial piety. It is a rural tradition. The elderly are usually very happy about it, but it is not very common these days," he told Guizhou Radio TV Station. According to the villager, the ceremony costs around $2,800 (Rs 2.4 lakh). It included the expense for the banquet, horn players and coffin bearers. In Chinese culture, coffins are considered auspicious because guancai, the Chinese word for coffin, sounds similar to 'official wealth." Allowing living elderly people to experience the coffin is believed to bring blessings, longevity and peace. In many villages, people over 70 prepare their own coffins and keep them at home. Funerals for the living are called 'celebrations", showing a calm approach to death. Chinese funerals include many superstitions. One is covering mirrors to protect the spirit and avoiding crying near the coffin. The direction of the coffin is chosen carefully. The funeral procession is grand, often led by music. view comments First Published: July 12, 2025, 20:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Mumbai civic body rolls out Rs 71cr Powai Lake clean-up tender work

Mumbai: Mumbai: Following repeated demands from concerned citizens and environmentalists, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) allotted the civil work on diverting the sewer water flow from Powai Lake and floated a tender for setting up a treatment plant near the site at a cost of over Rs 71 crore. Members of the BMC-appointed Advanced Locality Management Committee and NatConnect Foundation launched a joint campaign focusing attention on the deterioration of Powai Lake due to the direct inflow of untreated waste of 18 million litres a day. "The BMC officials have now met the Powai residents and informed us that the tender process of diverting the sewer line has been launched. This is good news for the lake,"said Pamela Cheema of the Save Powai Lake group. The lake, with abundant biodiversity has been covered with hyacinth, which the BMC failed to check despite a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order, following which the public awareness campaign was launched addressing the chief minister and BMC commissioner. "We are happy that commissioner Bhushan Gagrani has directed his team led by additional commissioner Abhijit Bangar, and the process of tender work to divert the sewer away from the lake has started," said NatConnect director B N Kumar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo The work on laying sewer pipelines was allotted to Swastik Constructions following an e-tender, papers given to ALM members at a meeting at S Ward on Friday. Stating that better late than never, ALM Chairperson Pamela Cheema remarked that the people of Powai are anxiously awaiting the speedy execution of the lake clean-up. The work is slated to start on July 21 with an 18-month deadline. In a related development, the civic body floated an e-tender for Rs 68.88 crore STP at Powai. The bids were to be opened on June 30, and details are awaited, said Milan Bhatt, an ALM member. BMC, meanwhile, commissioned harvester machines to clear the hyacinth following public pressure. But this measure proved to be grossly inadequate as the vegetation grew rapidly due to the continuous draining of sewer, NatConnect said. The end-to-end hyacinth sheet over the lake prevents the sun rays from penetrating the lake, thus badly impacting aquatic life. Meanwhile, NatConnect has taken up the dire state of Powai Lake with the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), which in turn asked the state environment director to take necessary action.
