India Declines To Endorse SCO Statement Over Pahalgam Terror Attack Omission

Hans India3 days ago

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has declined to endorse a joint declaration at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's Defense Ministers' meeting in China's Qingdao, citing the document's failure to acknowledge the Pahalgam terrorist incident that resulted in 26 civilian deaths while simultaneously referencing Balochistan in what appeared to be veiled criticism of India.
The document's omission of the Pahalgam attack, which India considers a significant terrorist incident, while including references to Balochistan suggests Pakistan's influence on the statement's content, particularly given China's current chairmanship of the organization and its close relationship with Islamabad. India has consistently rejected Pakistani allegations regarding its involvement in Balochistan, maintaining that Pakistan should address its own internal issues and cease supporting terrorist activities rather than making unfounded accusations.
During his address to the SCO summit, which includes member nations Russia, Pakistan, China, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, Singh emphasized the need for collective action against terrorism to ensure regional security. He identified radicalization, extremism, and terrorism as fundamental threats to peace, security, and trust within the region.
Singh delivered pointed remarks about nations that employ cross-border terrorism as a policy instrument while providing sanctuary to terrorist organizations. He argued that countries sponsoring and nurturing terrorism for narrow interests must face consequences, criticizing the double standards exhibited by some nations. The Defense Minister urged the SCO not to hesitate in condemning such practices.
Specifically addressing the Pahalgam incident, Singh detailed how victims were targeted based on their religious identity and noted that the Resistance Front, identified as a proxy of the UN-designated terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack. He drew parallels between the Pahalgam assault and previous LeT operations in India, emphasizing that the attack patterns were consistent with the organization's historical methods.
Singh affirmed India's zero-tolerance policy toward terrorism and its right to self-defense against terrorist threats. He declared that terrorist epicenters are no longer immune from retaliation and that India would not hesitate to target them when necessary. His statements reinforced India's position following Operation Sindoor, the military response to the Pahalgam attack.
The Defense Minister called for accountability among perpetrators, organizers, financiers, and sponsors of terrorism, emphasizing that all terrorist acts are criminal and unjustifiable. He urged SCO members to unequivocally condemn terrorism in all its forms.
Singh's refusal to sign the joint statement represents India's firm stance against terrorism and aligns with the country's broader diplomatic messaging following Operation Sindoor. As part of this strategy, India has dispatched eight diplomatic delegations internationally to articulate New Delhi's position on counterterrorism and its future approach to addressing such threats.

Narendra Modi says Amarnath Yatra to start on 3 July, hails India's social sector schemes

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that the Amarnath Yatra, the annual Hindu pilgrimage in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, will begin on 3 July. Devotees of Lord Shiva travel to the Amarnath Temple shrine located near Pahalgam, where Pakistan-sponsored terrorists massacred 26 tourists on 22 April, prompting India to launch Operation Sindoor—air strikes to destroy terror infrastructure in the Islamic nation. In his monthly radio address 'Mann Ki Baat', Modi extended his best wishes to those who were going on pilgrimages such as the Amarnath Yatra and the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. "I also commend those who are engaged in making these Yatras successful and safe with a spirit of service," he said. He also hailed India's various social security schemes, which together covered 950 million people in 2025, compared to about 250 million a decade ago. Citing a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO), a UN agency, Modi said that 64% of India's population was "definitely availing of some social protection benefit or the other". India's social sector welfare and protection schemes include the public distribution system which provides subsidized foodgrains to poor citizens. Under the PM Awaas Yojana (PMAY), the government provides ₹ 1.2 lakh in plain areas and ₹ 1.3 lakh in hilly areas for assistance in housing. Similarly, the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) provides health coverage of ₹ 5 lakh per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization free of cost. The Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) is an essential social welfare initiative aimed at ensuring food security for the most vulnerable segments of society. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was launched with the specific purpose of ameliorating the hardships faced by the poor and needy due to economic disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in the country in 2020. The free-foodgrain scheme has been extended till the end of 2028, and benefits more than 800 million Indians. He also said that the people of Vietnam had sent messages of gratitude to India for taking the relics of Lord Buddha found in Andhra Pradesh to the southeast Asian country. The president of Vietnam, deputy prime minister, and senior ministers visited one of the nine locations where the Buddha statues were kept, and around 15% of Vietnam's total population had visited these sites, said Modi. "Originally these sacred relics of Bhagwan Buddha were discovered at Nagarjunakonda of Palnadu district in Andhra Pradesh. This place has a deep connection with Buddhism. It is said that once upon a time, people from far-off places including Sri Lanka and China used to come to this place," he said, adding that earlier, these relics were also taken to Thailand and Mongolia. The prime minister also urged citizens to reduce the consumption of oil in food to reduce obesity in the country. Modi said the Eri Silk, a unique sort of cruelty-free silk produced in Meghalaya, has received a geographical identification tag a few days ago. "Nowadays, the demand for such products is rising rapidly in the world, which do not involve violence and do not have any ill-effect on nature, hence, Eri Silk of Meghalaya is a perfect product for the global market," he said. He also noted the work done by several self-help groups across the country. Modi, who will embark on a 5-nation tour on 2 July to attend the Brics summit in Brazil, also appreciated local efforts in Gujarat and Maharashtra regarding conservation of the environment. Ahmedabad's municipal commission has started afforestation efforts and set a target to plant a million trees. "A special aspect about this campaign is 'Sindoor Van'. This forest is dedicated to the bravehearts of Operation Sindoor. Sindoor saplings are being planted in the memory of those brave people who have sacrificed everything for the country," he said. He also said the efforts to become to a carbon-neutral village by the Patoda Gram Panchayat in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district in Maharashtra were noteworthy. The village practices collecting garbage from each house, treating dirty water before it reaches the river, and performing last rites with cow dung cakes and planting a tree in the name of every deceased person using the ash, according to Modi. In Hindu religious practices, last-rite rituals involve the deceased person's body being burned on a wooden pyre. Speaking about group captain Shubhanshu Shukla's space flight to the International Space Station, Modi said, "India has scripted a new history." He also added that the next 'Mann Ki Baat' address will discuss this mission.

Pakistani Importers Grapple With Shipping Delays, Cost Surge After India's Cargo Ban

Last Updated: Pakistani exporters have also noted a rise in shipping and insurance costs, though many say the overall impact on exports has so far remained limited India's ban on ships carrying Pakistani goods from anchoring at its ports has disrupted trade routes, leading to higher freight costs and longer delivery times, according to reports. The comprehensive ban, effective from 2 May 2025, was imposed following the Pahalgam terror attack. It blocks both the direct and indirect import or transit of goods originating in, or exported from, Pakistan. As a result, Pakistani importers have reported delays and increased shipping charges, Dawn newspaper reported on Sunday. 'Mother vessels are not coming to Pakistan due to this Indian action, which delays our imports by 30 to 50 days," said Javed Bilwani, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He stated that importers are now relying on smaller feeder vessels, which has driven up costs. Exporters have also noted a rise in shipping and insurance costs, though many say the overall impact on exports has so far remained limited. 'There is no significant impact on exports…, except for a rise in insurance costs. Shipping charges had already gone up even before the escalation," Aamir Aziz, a textile exporter, told the publication. Pakistan's export sector is heavily dependent on imported raw materials for value addition. With the Pakistani government already restricting imports to preserve foreign currency reserves, any disruption in the supply chain could have far-reaching effects, Dawn added. Trade ties between India and Pakistan have been tense since the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, after which India raised import duties on Pakistani goods to 200 per cent. Formal trade has largely remained frozen, with bilateral trade shrinking from USD 2.41 billion in 2018 to USD 1.2 billion in 2024. Pakistan's exports to India dropped from USD 547.5 million in 2019 to just USD 480,000 in 2024. Following the new ban, Indian authorities are also cracking down on efforts to bypass the rules. Last week, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized 39 containers at Nhava Sheva Port in Navi Mumbai. The containers, holding over 1,100 metric tonnes of Pakistani-origin goods worth around Rs 9 crore, had been routed through Dubai and the UAE. The Ministry of Finance confirmed the seizure in an official statement. It said the goods violated India's import regulations, which prohibit both direct and indirect imports from Pakistan. One partner of the importing firm has been arrested in the case. (With inputs from PTI) Location : Pakistan First Published:

Manipur sees drop in violence, rise in drug seizures under President's rule: Officials

Imphal, Manipur has witnessed a significant decline in violence, with a sharp drop in civilian deaths and injuries and a marked increase in drug seizures since the imposition of President's rule in February, officials said here on Sunday. Manipur sees drop in violence, rise in drug seizures under President's rule: Officials Besides, Manipur Police, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces are also working tirelessly to recover thousands of weapons looted from police armouries following the outbreak of violence in May 2023, they said. Despite the relative calm, challenges remain for the security forces to recover thousands of lost arms and addressing the activities of the banned valley-based terrorist groups involved in extortion and petty crimes, they added. The recent crackdown on cadres of Meitei outfit Arambai Tenggol, accused of allegedly engineering violence against the Kuki people and indulging in largescale violence within the valley, has also been helpful in bringing a sense of peace in certain parts of the state, officials said. Recently, a dismissed police head constable of Manipur Police and a prominent Arambai Tenggol leader Asem Kanan Singh and four associates were arrested in a joint operation of Manipur Police and the CBI. Singh was wanted for many cases including an alleged attack on Additional Superintendent of Manipur police last year. After the arrest of Singh, the outfit announced distancing itself from any violent activities being done on the streets in its name. During the period of central rule beginning February 13, only one protest-related fatality has been reported, a stark contrast to the 260 fatalities documented from May 3, 2023, until the enforcement of President's rule, they said. Injuries have also seen a significant drop, with just 29 new cases reported in the last four months compared to a total of 1,776 since May 2023. From February 13 to June 26, the region saw no incidents of arson or vandalism, while cumulative incidents of such nature crossed 17,000 before the imposition of President's rule. In the fight against drug abuse, Manipur Police, Assam Rifles and paramilitary forces have stepped up their operations, resulting in the arrest of 84 people under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act during the central rule period. The security forces have seized 24.4 kg of heroin, 25.7 kg of brown sugar, 31.8 kg of opium, and over 379 kg of 'Ganja', contributing to a stabilisation of the drug issue in the region, officials said. However, the issue of unrecovered firearms continues to pose a significant challenge for the security agencies. Since the imposition of central rule, no new arms have been reported lost from police armouries, but of the initial 6,020 firearms lost, many are understood to have been recovered or surrendered. In the last four months alone, 2,390 weapons were seized out of which many were looted weapons. Moreover, security forces have recently demolished 63 illegal bunkers, adding to the total of 548 that had been dismantled since May 2023. While arrests related to extortion continue, with 336 people apprehended in the last four months out of a total of 601, experts are voicing concerns over the resurgence of banned terror groups, including the United National Liberation Front , People's Liberation Army , Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup , and People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak . Officials alleged that these groups are running extortion rackets besides indulging in out of court settlements in cases related to matrimonial and property disputes. Manipur Police recently cracked down on such a gang and arrested some people, they added. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
