Malaysia, Laos forge strategic rail-sea trade link

The Star25-05-2025
PUTRAJAYA: Laos and Malaysia have established a partnership to boost cross-border trade via rail and sea with the exchange of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) and Thanaleng Dry Port (TDP) here on Sunday (May 25).
The MoC was exchanged between MMC Port Holdings Sdn Bhd (MMC Ports) chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Azman Shah Mohd Yusof and PTL Holding Co. Ltd (PTLH) CEO Chanthone Sitthixay, witnessed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his counterpart, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
PPSB is a subsidiary of MMC Ports, while PTLH is the parent company of Vientiane Logistics Park Co. Ltd., which manages the TDP.
The collaboration is part of a broader initiative under the Pan-Asia Railway Network, integrating the China-Lao Railway to create a strategic trade route linking southern China through Laos and Thailand to Malaysia's West Coast.
Speaking to Bernama, Azman Shah said the cooperation underscores Malaysia's growing role as a regional logistics hub and is aligned with efforts to enhance Asean connectivity.
He added that the initiative will not only promote multimodal integration by combining rail and sea transport but also reduce transit times and logistics costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and boost regional economic growth.
"We are pleased to contribute to TDP's efforts to realise Lao's national strategy to transform from a land-locked country to a land-linked nation.
"This partnership positions Malaysia as a gateway for trade between mainland Southeast Asia and global markets, while also supporting Lao in becoming a land-linked economy,' he said.
Azman Shah said that the collaboration would involve the sharing of operational knowledge, joint marketing efforts, system integration, simplification of documentation processes, harmonisation of infrastructure, and short-term personnel exchanges.
MMC Ports is a holding company for its subsidiaries that operate five ports across Peninsular Malaysia, namely the PPSB, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Port Bhd, Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, and Tanjung Bruas Port Sdn Bhd, making it Malaysia's largest port operator.
Meanwhile, TDP managing director Sakhone Philangam said the collaboration marked a significant milestone in transforming Laos into a key logistics player despite its landlocked status.
Philangam noted the strategic partnership is expected to benefit Laos economically, as the country's small-scale economy needs to rely on higher trade volumes through cooperation with regional players like Malaysia and China.
"Malaysia is well-established in maritime logistics, with strong links to Africa, India and other regions. This makes Penang Port a logical partner for us.
"In logistics, you need agglomeration and massification. We don't have that volume, so this partnership will enable us to tap into a larger logistics network," he said.
This was the second time that the TDP signed an MoC with a Malaysian company, following an earlier agreement with Mutiara Perlis Sdn Bhd to facilitate inland port services between Perlis Inland Port and TDP in Vientiane.
In 2024, total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Laos stood at RM99.7mil, with Malaysia's exports valued at RM67.8mil and imports totalling RM31.9mil.
Malaysia is Laos' fifth-largest foreign investor, with total investments worth US$942mil across 46 projects in sectors including renewable energy, transport, telecommunications, construction, banking and hospitality. - Bernama

DRB-HICOM unit adds seven new vehicle carrier prime movers to fleet

KUALA LUMPUR: DRB-Hicom Auto Solutions Sdn Bhd (DHAS) has expanded its vehicle delivery business with seven new vehicle carrier prime movers. The seven units of 10-litre MAN prime movers were recently delivered to DHAS, bringing the automotive logistics provider's total number of vehicle carriers to 10. It also has two motorcycle carriers as part of its fleet. Each vehicle carrier is able to transport up to seven sedan cars, or five units of four-wheel drive vehicles. With this addition, total carrying capacity will increase by more than 50 per cent. DHAS chief executive officer Fawzi Ahmad said the fleet expansion enables the company to shift focus from only inbound activities to more outbound delivery services to dealers' doorstep throughout the transportation cycle. "With the new carriers, DHAS reduces reliance on out-sourced providers. We are now better able to provide a wider range of in-house services, giving us better control in ensuring the best of service to our customers," he added. The expanded fleet, which had been deployed immediately, positions DHAS to serve the rapid growth of the Malaysian automotive market, particularly in respect to electric vehicles (EVs). Fawzi said the company continues to expand operations and meet the rising demand for vehicle transportation services. "These additional vehicle carriers also help us enhance cost management and improve our operational control. "These efficiency improvements ultimately benefit our customers in various ways," he said. He added that DHAS is currently focused on further strengthening market presence, while driving innovation within its operations. As part of its long-term strategy, the company continuously assesses future requirements, adapting operations to ensure sustainable growth and alignment with customer needs. As a subsidiary of DRB-HICOM Bhd, enhancements in DHAS' capabilities feed directly into the group's deep-rooted presence throughout the entire automotive industry ecosystem. This ranges from car manufacturing and assembly, vehicle importation and logistics, distribution and retailing, after-sales service, to second-hand sales as well as car rental and leasing services. DHAS, established in 2006, provides end-to-end automotive logistics with amongst the largest networks of comprehensive vehicle delivery services to dealerships nationwide. It operates from well-equipped vehicle yards in Port Klang Free Zone in Port Klang, and Pekan, Pahang, with capacities of 3,800 units and 6,000 units respectively. In addition to nationwide vehicle distribution, DHAS offers a full suite of logistics services. This includes the importation of completely built-up vehicles and completely knocked-down kits, forwarding and customs clearance, warehouse management and pre-delivery inspection activities.

Sarawak achieves RM71.1 bln trade surplus in 2024 amid global challenges

Exports remained the key driver of Sarawak's trade performance, expanding by 3.1 per cent to RM134.9 billion in 2024. Imports also registered a modest increase of 1.9 per cent, totalling RM63.8 billion. — Bernama photo KUCHING (July 4): Sarawak recorded at total trade value of RM198.7 billion in 2024, achieving a trade surplus of RM71.1 billion despite challenges posed by global market uncertainties and geopolitical tensions. According to the Sarawak External Trade Statistics for Reference Year 2024 released on Thursday, the figure represents a 2.7 per cent increase in total trade compared to the previous year, underscoring the state's resilience amid fluctuating external conditions. Exports remained the key driver of Sarawak's trade performance, expanding by 3.1 per cent to RM134.9 billion in 2024. Imports also registered a modest increase of 1.9 per cent, totalling RM63.8 billion. Meanwhile, the trade balance saw a year-on-year rise of 4.2 per cent, reaching RM71.1 billion. Chief Statistician Dato Sri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin attributed the growth to firm global demand and higher commodity prices, particularly for crude palm oil. Japan emerged as Sarawak's largest export destination in 2024, with export values rising 1.4 per cent to RM29.1 billion. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) dominated the export basket to Japan at RM25.4 billion, followed by wood products (RM1.4 billion) and iron and steel products (RM0.8 billion). 'Japan alone accounted for a significant portion of Sarawak's overall export revenue,' stated the report. China remained another key market, although exports there experienced a slight dip of 1.7 per cent to RM18.2 billion. LNG exports to China amounted to RM13.5 billion, while manufactured metal products and palm oil-related items were also notable contributors at RM1.1 billion and RM0.9 billion, respectively. China still made up 13.5 per cent of Sarawak's total exports. Exports to Asean countries fell by 2.8 per cent to RM16.9 billion, down from RM17.4 billion in 2023. The decline was largely due to reduced exports of electrical and electronic (E&E) products, which plunged by RM1.6 billion or 70.9 per cent. Crude petroleum exports fell by RM1.1 billion, while sawn timber and moulding exports saw a sharp decline of 64.9 per cent. Among Asean nations, Thailand was Sarawak's top export destination in the region, accounting for 39.8 per cent of exports valued at RM6.7 billion. Brunei Darussalam followed with RM2.9 billion (17.5 per cent), and Vietnam at RM2.8 billion (16.7 per cent). Dr Mohd Uzir also highlighted that alongside Japan and China, the Republic of Korea, Peninsular Malaysia, and India made up the top five of Sarawak's key export destinations in 2024. Collectively, Japan and China alone accounted for 35.1 per cent of Sarawak's total exports, valued at RM47.3 billion. 'While there were contractions in some sectors and destinations, overall trade performance remained positive, driven by resilience in major commodities and select manufacturing and agricultural exports,' he said. He added the data compiled in the report was based on physical transactions of goods at the entry and exit points of the state, offering an accurate representation of Sarawak's external trade footprint.
