Black Book: Celine unveils scent of the summer and Bvlgari revisits watch classic

The National22-06-2025
From new fragrances to summer-chic bags, The National 's Luxury magazine team rounds up the most interesting and noteworthy arrivals in the world of fashion, interiors, fragrance and jewellery.
Un Été Français parfum by Celine
Celine's new Un Eté Français (A French Summer) fragrance, created by former creative director Hedi Slimane, draws inspiration from long, languid summers in a beach house in Ramatuelle on the French Mediterranean.
The latest addition to the brand's Haute Parfumerie collection opens with spicy bergamot and earthy petit-grain, softening into zesty neroli and gorse – a wild coastal flower with a citrus-coconut scent. A warm vanilla base evokes the essence of a French holiday in a bottle.
Un Été Français perfume, Dh1,200 for 100ml
Rafiafiori by Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana nods to a cooler, more laid-back style for summer for 2025. Ditching corsetry and black lace, the Italian masters of Sicilian vamp embrace skinny knit stripes and easy raffia accessories.
A pompom raffia tote, hand-cut raffia necklace and cat-eye sunglasses wrapped in Madagascan palm leaf complete the nature-led look with breezy, effortless cool.

Grain de Café y Cartier
A reimagining of Jeanne Toussaint's 1938 motif, Cartier's Grain de Cafe – literally coffee bean – continues to charm. The latest bold, sculptural pieces echo the 1930s origin story while nodding to the glamour of 1950s cocktail jewellery.
A standout limited-edition bracelet is crafted around a platinum and diamond spine, with 14 variegated gold beans on either side, each tipped with a white diamond. Meticulously made, each bracelet takes 54 hours to complete.

Maison Dioriviera by Dior
The Dior universe has expanded to include new homeware pieces inspired by the brand's former womenswear head Maria Grazia Chiuri 's Dioriviera collection.
Rooted in travel and reinvention, the storied motifs have been translated into elegant interiors by Dior Maison. The Toile de Jouy Palms print, already seen on bags and ready-to-wear, now adorns a rounded vase crafted by enamelling specialists, Manufacture des Emaux de Longwy.
Meanwhile, the signature cannage weave steps off handbags and on to a sleek side table, set in Perspex, and a beach mat ready for stylish escapes.
Bvlgari Bvlgari watch turns 50
To mark the 50th anniversary of perhaps its best-known watch, the Bvlgari Bvlgari, the Italian house has unveiled four new variations.
Launched in 1975 and reimagined by master watch designer Gérald Genta in 1977, the design remains true to its Roman roots, featuring a signature engraved bezel and minimalist dial. Offered in two sizes – 26mm and 38mm – each features a unique marble dial. The smaller version houses a Solotempo automatic movement, while the larger is powered by the calibre BVL 191.

The Six Best Paintings by Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh is one of the most celebrated and influential artists in history. Known for his expressive use of color, bold brushstrokes, and emotionally charged works, van Gogh created around 900 paintings during his lifetime. Though he faced personal struggles and limited recognition while alive, his artwork is now considered priceless. Here are six of the best paintings by Vincent van Gogh that exemplify his visionary talent and enduring legacy. 1. The Starry Night (1889) Arguably van Gogh's most iconic work, The Starry Night captures a swirling night sky over the village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Created while van Gogh was in a mental asylum, the painting expresses both turbulence and serenity with its dynamic sky, cypress trees, and quiet town below. The bold colors and rhythmic brushwork make it one of the most recognized and loved paintings in the world. Location: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York 2. Irises (1889) Painted during his time at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Irises showcases van Gogh's fascination with nature and color. The vivid blues, purples, and greens highlight his attention to detail and unique composition style. Each iris is given its personality, making the painting feel alive and full of motion. Location: J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles 3. Sunflowers (1888) Van Gogh's Sunflowers series is among his most celebrated works. The version created in Arles features a vibrant bouquet of sunflowers in a simple vase. The yellows range from golden to ochre, reflecting van Gogh's mastery of color and light. The painting symbolizes friendship and gratitude and was created to decorate the guest room for his friend Paul Gauguin. Location: National Gallery, London 4. The Bedroom in Arles (1888) The Bedroom is a deeply personal painting that represents comfort, solitude, and van Gogh's longing for stability. The use of flat colors and skewed perspective gives the room a dreamlike quality. This painting was one of van Gogh's favorites, and he created three versions of it. Location: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam 5. Wheatfield with Crows (1890) Believed to be one of van Gogh's final works, Wheatfield with Crows conveys a sense of foreboding and emotional intensity. The dark sky, swirling crows, and divided path reflect the inner turmoil he experienced shortly before his death. The painting is often seen as a haunting yet powerful farewell from the artist. Location: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam 6. The Avenue of Les Alyscamps (1888) Painted during his time in Arles, The Avenue of Les Alyscamps depicts a tree-lined Roman necropolis path in rich autumn colors. Van Gogh was inspired by the changing seasons and often painted this site with Gauguin. The vibrant oranges and yellows highlight his skill in capturing the mood and atmosphere of a setting. Final Brushstroke Vincent van Gogh's work transcends time, emotion, and artistic convention. These six paintings reflect his unique vision and the intensity with which he saw the world. Whether you're an art lover or a curious admirer, exploring these masterpieces offers a deeper appreciation of one of history's greatest painters.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' begins filming with Meryl Streep as fashion's fiercest editor

Fashion's fiercest editor is officially back, and she's not alone. Production has kicked off on The Devil Wears Prada 2, with Oscar-winner Meryl Streep donning Miranda Priestly's icy composure once again. Alongside her are Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, all reprising their iconic roles from the 2006 hit. The sequel, under the banner of Disney's 20th Century Studios, is set to sashay into cinemas on May 1, 2026. The film, still shrouded in stylish secrecy, also welcomes Kenneth Branagh to the high-stakes world of fashion media. Branagh will play Priestly's husband, a new dynamic that promises fresh intrigue to the story. The studio confirmed the news through an Instagram post. View this post on Instagram A post shared by 20th Century Studios (@20thcenturystudios) The post was captioned, " The Devil Wears Prada 2. Now in production." The 2006 original, based on Lauren Weisberger's bestselling novel, followed aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Hathaway) as she navigated the world of couture and cruelty under Priestly's command. Now, nearly two decades later, the sequel reportedly sees Miranda grappling with a different challenge: the collapse of the print magazine empire she once ruled. Emily Blunt's character, Emily Charlton, no longer fetches coffee, but has levelled up. As per Variety, she now holds a top role at a luxury conglomerate, one Miranda must court for dwindling advertising dollars. In the cut-throat ballet of modern publishing, tables have turned, and alliances will be tested. Hathaway's Andy Sachs, last seen walking away from Runway, remains a question mark. Her character, now established in traditional journalism, could bring yet another lens to the film's theme of media in transition. Original director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna are back at the helm. Karen Rosenfelt, producer of the original, also rejoins the production.
