Collector Sheikh Abdul Rahman reviews coastal areas in Villupuram to develop tourism
During his visit, the collector emphasised the need to enhance the facilities in these coastal villages, which are often visited by domestic and international tourists. The proposals for developing the infrastructure include the provision of essential amenities such as clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and children's parks. The collector held discussions with officials from respective departments to outline the necessary steps for infrastructure improvement.
The inspection also included Keezhputhupattu beach, with the goal of developing the site to qualify for the prestigious Blue Flag certification, an international eco-label for beaches meeting high standards of cleanliness and sustainability.
In addition, the collector reviewed the location identified in Nadukuppam for setting up a Blue-Green Centre under the Department of Environment and Climate Change, which has already granted preliminary approval for the initiative.
The inspection was attended by key officials, including Fisheries Department assistant director Nithya Priyadharshini, district tourism officer Janarthanan, Marakkanam revenue tahsildar Neelaveni, and Environment and Climate Change Department officer Pavithra, among others.

10-year plan to bring the world to Mamallapuram
Chennai: Over the next decade, Mamallapuram will evolve into a full-fledged tourism hub, complete with beach circuits, cultural trails, botanical gardens, and adventure zones, while keeping its ancient stone monuments intact. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The state tourism department has launched a 10-year tourism destination master plan aimed at turning the town into a tourism hub. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has floated a tender to onboard a consultancy firm for the preparation of the plan. The first major changes are expected within 8-12 months of commencement, said officials. "We are envisaging Mamallapuram as an international destination. It will be a comprehensive development leveraging the tourism and cultural potential of Mamallapuram and nearby areas. CMDA's plan will be on regulations," said K Manivasan, tourism, culture and religious endowments department. The plan proposes a mix of eco-tourism, heritage trails, adventure sports, beachside recreation, and wellness zones. The town will host weekend carnivals, monsoon festivals, and educational camps to ensure tourists keep coming through the year, said an official from the tourism department. Community-based tourism will be promoted, with local artisans and vendors playing a key role. Inputs from focus groups and tourism stakeholders will shape the final concept. It will include provisions for climate resilience, waste recycling, solar energy, and plastic-free zones, he added. The plan also focuses on infrastructure. "Mamallapuram should be developed like Kovalam's Blue Flag beach — clean, inviting, and ideal for tourists seeking relaxation. Even our street vendors and shops will follow a uniform, hygienic design, blending tradition with comfort," said Valarmathi Y, chairman of the Mamallapuram Town Panchayat. Padmini Narayanan, former secretary, Travel Agents Association of India, said that Mamallapuram should become a destination that welcomes all types of tourists. Rushikonda Blue Flag Beach in Vizag will be beautified further, says A.P. Tourism Minister
Minister for Tourism Kandula Durgesh inspected the Rushikonda Blue Flag Beach on Thursday. Mr. Durgesh said that greater coordination between officials and the people's representatives was being ensured to ensure proper upkeep of the facilities created at the Blue Flag Beach. The Blue Flag tag was temporarily withdrawn by the Denmark-based Foundation for Environment Education (FEE) after it received complaints related to poor maintenance of amenities at Rushikonda. However, the tag has been restored now, the Minister said. He assured the vendors managing stalls on the beach and the Life Guards posted there of providing a solution to the issues raised by them. He announced that apart from improving standards at the Blue Flag beach, measures would be taken for further beautification to improve the tourist footfall. Double-decker bus services on the Beach Road would be a major tourist attraction, Mr. Durgesh said. Terming the Blue Flag certification for Rushikonda Beach as a major achievement, the Minister said it would attract tourists from across the globe. With the facilities including washrooms, changing rooms and grey water treatment, the Blue Flad beach will attarct International tourists, he said. The Minister called upon the officials and visitors to ensure cleanliness, hygiene and proper upkeep of the facilities to ensure that the Blue Flag certificate was not withdrawn. 'The Tourism Department will undertake beautification of the beach at a cost of ₹24 lakh,' Mr. Durgesh said. He also spoke about the measures initiated for the revival of the cruise liner operation. A decision has been taken to operate the cruise liner four times till September this year. Measures will be taken to operate it through out the year,' Mr. Durgesh added. Bheemunipatnam MLA Ganta Srinivasa Rao, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner Ketan Garg accompanied the Tourism Minister during the inspection.
