34kg of ganja seized in two busts in Ernakulam
Kochi: After a brief lull, drug traffickers appear to be back in action in Ernakulam, with nearly 34kg of ganja seized in two separate busts on Sunday.
A special investigation team led by Perumbavoor ASP and Kuruppampady police arrested two West Bengal natives with 18kg of ganja.

Arrested persons were identified as Khalil Mandal, 41, and S K Sameem, 26, natives of Murshidabad, West Bengal.
Based on confidential information received by district police chief M Hemalatha, they were taken into custody while awaiting customers near a bar in Odakkali Panichayam area. Sameem brought the ganja from Bengal by train on Saturday morning. Mandal previously worked as a construction labourer in Panichayam area.
They were selling the cannabis at a rate of Rs 25,000 per kilogram, said police.
Police have started investigating those who came to purchase ganja from them. Investigation team included Perumbavoor ASP Shakti Singh Arya, inspector V M Kurson, SI Ibrahimkutty, ASI P A Abdul Manaf and senior CPOs Varghese T Venatt, T A Afsal, Benny Isaac, E M Rajesh Arun and Jijo.
Meanwhile, Kochi city police apprehended two West Bengal natives with 16kg of ganja near FACT in Eloor.
Arrested individuals were identified as Afsal Hussain, 24, of Sibnarnagar, West Bengal, and Rony Sekh, 19, of Sagarpara, West Bengal.
Acting on a tip-off received by city commissioner Putta Vimaladitya, the operation was conducted under the supervision of DCP Ashwathi Jiji and Juvenapudi Mahesh. Narcotics cell, led by ACP Abdul Salam, along with Dansaf SI and team members, seized 16.68kg of cannabis from the accused. Ganja was packed tightly in two travel bags. The suspects, who were coming from West Bengal, procured the cannabis from Odisha, brought it to Angamaly, and were caught while transporting it to Eloor FACT area, said police.
Accused used to distribute ganja to dealers in Eloor, Kalamassery, Fort Kochi and Ernakulam North areas. Investigations are ongoing to determine source of the cannabis and whether other suspects are involved, said police.

Panaji: In a disturbing trend, police said that cyber fraudsters target Goa's unemployed youth by offering them online task-based jobs (such as writing reviews), and then, when they're paid for it, they lose the same money to the fraudsters after they gain their trust. Cyber crime SP Rahul Gupta said that the cyber criminals target unemployed youth and pay them upon completion of their tasks. Gupta said that initially, the criminals pay up to Rs 20,000 for completion of the task. 'Once the cyber fraudsters gain the trust of the youth, they lure them to invest in IPOs related to their companies and promise huge returns. The online job scam then turns into an investment scam. Once the victim invests and decides to withdraw, they direct victims to pay different types of fees, resulting in cheating,' said Gupta. On Sunday, Porvorim police station said that a 29-year-old resident of Mumbai cheated a youth of around Rs 10 lakh under the pretext of task-based jobs. The Porvorim resident, in his complaint, said that an unknown accused person offered a part-time job, inviting him to give Google ratings with a promise of Rs 40 per rating. Based on technical surveillance, one accused person was identified to be in Mumbai, and hence a team from Porvorim police station nabbed the accused,' said Gupta. Further investigation is in progress under PI Rahul Parab. TOI reported that an investigation into cybercrimes has revealed that fraudsters target youth to ostensibly hire their bank accounts and SIM cards, using gaming apps as an inducement, and then deploying the personal information for criminal activities. Cyber fraudsters approach youth through social media and other platforms and persuade them to rent out their bank accounts and SIM cards to earn additional pocket money.

Online fraud hits Santa Cruz resident, 71; Kolkata man held
Panaji: A 71-year-old resident of Santa Cruz has been cheated of over Rs 3 lakh by cyber fraudsters who allegedly offered him a free shopping deal on his credit card. Old Goa police have arrested one person in connection with the case. Gupta said, 'The complainant received a WhatsApp video call and was induced to share his CVV number and OTP, resulting in an unauthorised transaction of over Rs 3 lakh.' During the investigation, Gupta said, technical analysis of the gang narrowed the search down to Suman Ghughu, residing in Kolkata. 'Further analysis revealed that the accused person took the money and transferred it to multiple bank accounts,' Gupta said. A police station team from Old Goa proceeded to West Bengal to trace and arrest the accused person. The team kept a close watch on the accused, his activities, and movements for two days, Gupta said. 'Ghughu was apprehended and brought to Netaji Nagar police station, Kolkata, after a lengthy search with the assistance of local police,' Gupta said. 'He was found giving vague answers and denying the digital evidence collected against him.' The accused was produced before a Kolkata court, which directed transit remand for three days, Gupta said. 'Ghughu was formally arrested at the Old Goa police station,' he said. Gupta stated that the investigation is ongoing to trace the origin of the crime, recover the stolen amount, and identify other associates involved.

Nine get life imprisonment in five-year-old double murder case
Mhow: Kukshi court of district and additional sessions Judge Arti Shukla Pandey sentenced nine individuals to life imprisonment in a 2020 double murder case. The accused were found guilty of brutally assaulting a man Dariyav Singh and his wife Zhaba Bai, leading to their deaths over a land dispute. Senior public prosecutor RK Gupta told TOI, "The incident occurred on March 21, 2020, at Amlal village of Dahi tehsil. Dariyav Singh and his wife Zhaba Bai were working in their field along with their son Rameshwar and daughter-in-law Gaurabai. Nine people — Chandarsingh Maurya, Sukhlal Maurya, Anitabai, Lalitabai, Kanhaiyalal, Bondribai, Jitendra, Manisha, and Gangabai — all residents of the same village, arrived at the spot and engaged in a heated argument with the couple. When Dariyav Singh objected to the abuse, the accused attacked him with iron rods and sticks. When Zhaba Bai intervened to protect her husband, she was also severely beaten with rods and sticks by the accused. Both Dariyav Singh and Zhaba Bai collapsed at the place. Dariyav Singh died on the spot, while Zhaba Bai died en route to Barwani hospital." Following the death of his parents, Rameshwar lodged a complaint at Kukshi police station. Khushi police registered a case and started investigation. During the investigation, all accused were arrested. Finding the nine accused guilty of the double murder, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment and also issued a fine of Rs 9000 on each of them.
