Coach cautions Pearly-Thinaah to stay wary although Japan nemesis set to split
PETALING JAYA: The end of Japanese bogey pair Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida's partnership should be a positive news for women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah but coach Rosman Razak is not celebrating.
World No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah have found Matsuyama-Shida a tough nut to crack, only winning once in their past 14 meetings against the latter.
The world No. 2 duo though will not be tormenting the Malaysians together much longer after announcing their decision to part ways after the World Championships from Aug 25-31 in Paris.
Rosman though does not believe Pearly-Thinaah will benefit much from their rivals' split as Matsuyama-Shida could still provide a stern challenge for his charges with different partners.
'I don't see a big advantage for Pearly-Thinaah in tournaments just because Matsuyama-Shida are going to split up,' said Rosman.
'They will likely still give us problems with different partners.
'Other countries can afford to split their top pairs because they have many strong players to form new partnerships.
'But it's not the same for us. We only have Pearly-Thinaah currently and they are an open book for our rivals as they know we will not split our pair and try out different partnerships. So, everyone will always try to beat our pair.
'So, it's better for us to focus on ourselves instead of looking at external things that are not in our control.'
Rosman is also wary of the threat posed by Matsuyama-Shida, who will be keen to end their partnership on a high, starting with their home Open which gets underway on Tuesday in Tokyo.
The duo will also compete in the China Open from July 22-27 in Changzhou before their last outing together in the world meet.
'Matsuyama-Shida will be out to do well in their last three tournaments together,' said Rosman.
'As a coach, I want my players to beat every opponent, not only this pair. We cannot afford to just focus on one pair as others are also strong.'
In the Japan Open, Matsuyma-Shida and Pearly-Thinaah, who are the second and third seeds respectively could clash in the semi-finals.
In the first round, the home favourites will play teammates Rui Hirokami-Sayaka Hobara while the Malaysians will face Bulgarian sisters Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva.

Pei Jing to spar with France's world championships team
PETALING JAYA: Malaysian shuttlers have long been sought after for their expertise by European counterparts, and now it's Lai Pei Jing's turn to render her service abroad. The mixed doubles specialist, who forms a professional partnership with Jimmy Wong, will travel to France later this month, after the Macau Open, to serve as sparring partner to the French national team for two weeks in their preparations for the World Championships in Paris from July 25-Aug 31. Pei Jing revealed that she was approached by the French coaches when competing at the Luxembourg Open in May. She said she went to seek coach Teo Kok Siang's blessings because this was also a crucial period for the independent shuttlers' camp as teammates such as world No. 6 Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie are also gearing up for the world meet. "During a tournament in Luxembourg, the French coaches approached me and asked if I was interested in sparring with their players," said Pei Jing when met at the launch of the SBE Serla Charity Badminton Championship here today. "I guess it's because they don't have female players who can offer strong competition. "I spoke to my coach about it because the players here also need me. "But he understood my situation — that I need the money — so he gave me his blessing to go. "This is my first time serving as a sparring partner for another country, but my heart remains with the Malaysian players," she added. The French will be counting on their star players — Alex Lanier in the men's singles, the Popov brothers, Toma Junior and Christo, in the men's doubles, and Thom Gicquel–Delphine Delrue in the mixed doubles — in their bid for a historic medal at the world meet. Pei Jing herself had managed nine appearances at the World Championships, three with Tan Aik Quan and six with Tan Kian Meng, and came closest to winning a medal in 2022 when they reached the quarter-finals. Pei Jing lent her support to the SBE Serla Charity Badminton Championship acknowledging the backing she had previously received from some of its sponsors. The tournament, set for this Sunday at Stadium Juara, aims to raise funds for Persatuan Memperbaiki Akhlak Che Tan Khor and Persatuan Amal & Kebajikan Amal Zhong Hua in Tanjong Malim. Apart from cash donations, sponsors such as SpectacleX and Bergamot are also contributing spectacles and medical supplies for NGOs in need.

Pearly-Thinaah face dangerous Stoevas
KUALA LUMPUR: Women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah will hope to make an immediate impact at this week's Japan Open after signing a new four-year contract with BAM. But they need to be mindful of a first round pitfall against the Bulgarian sisters, Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva. World No. 3 Pearly-Thinaah, who last week extended their contract with BAM after a seven-month impasse, are in high spirits to continue their strong run on the Word Tour. However, Rosman has cautioned that every pair at the Japan Open pose a threat, and that includes the 16th-ranked Stoeva siblings who are four-time European champions. "The first round is going to be very tricky against the Bulgarian sisters. They are a good pair," said Rosman. Pearly-Thinaah have a 2-1 head-to-head record against Gabriela-Stefani, and they need no reminder of their straight-game defeat in the first round of the 2023 Malaysia Open to the Stoevas. However, Pearly-Thinaah are in good form, having won the Thailand Open in May and finished runners-up at the Indonesia Open last month, and should advance.

Jonassen on spying mission in Tokyo
KUALA LUMPUR: Leong Jun Hao is Malaysia's only men's singles entry at the Japan Open this week, but national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen will still be a busy man in Tokyo. The Dane will be on a spying mission there ahead of the Paris World Championships on Aug 25-31. Apart from being on duty during the first round clash between Jun Hao and France's world No. 8 Alex Lanier, Jonassen will observe the potential rivals in Paris. He said it is vital to study players form Japan and China in the preparation for the World Championships. "I'm there (in Tokyo) to gather more information about how to approach the World Championships." World No. 1 Kunlavut Vitidsarn will be under scrutiny from the rival camps. The Thai hotshot faces China's skilful but inconsistent world No. 13 Weng Hong Yang in the first round. The Japan Open will also be a testing ground for Denmark's world No. 2 Anders Antonsen and China's world No. 3 Shi Yu Qi ahead of the World Championships. Jonassen is not hyping up the expectations on world No. 24 Jun Hao in his match against Lanier. The Frenchman is well ahead in ranking and is the Japan Open defending champion. "This is the case of an unseeded player (Jun Hao) facing a world top eight player. I want Jun Hao to get the most out of his game, enjoy the challenge of the physical game that is coming," said Jonassen. "Jun Hao is a tricky opponent for anybody and he has done well at the Singapore and Indonesia Opens."
