Rahul Gandhi's Picture On Sanitary Pad Packets In Bihar Sparks Row
The pads are being distributed under the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at raising menstrual hygiene awareness among women in Bihar. The initiative, says the party, is part of a larger campaign for women voters in the state.
"This drive is in line with the promise of Rs 2,500 monthly stipend under the Mai Bahin Samman Yojana that INDIA bloc would implement upon coming to power. We intend to provide free sanitary napkins", said Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar, who displayed packets containing the free pads, on Friday.
Over 5 lakh sanitary pad boxes will be distributed, said the party, underscoring the aim is to address menstrual health, break social taboos, and also spread awareness across rural and urban areas alike.
"What has happened to the Congress Party?" Nitish Kumar's party spokesperson Neeraj Kumar asked, calling the strategy a shallow electoral gimmick.
"Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been working continuously to empower the daughters and sisters of state, to empower them and to build a robust landscape for their overall development. The election year has come; daughters, women are a symbol of respect and honour, but you, in an arrogant display of power, put your face on it (sanitary pads)," he said, slamming the use of Mr Gandhi's image on the sanitary pads.
MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's face, too, appears on the sanitary pad packets.
"It shows, in politics, what is called ideological bankruptcy or lack of intellect. Not understanding the situation, or, naturally, the outcomes of being with a party like RJD, which is known for its political misdeeds, the effect of that co-operation was seen," Neeraj Kumar further said.
Predictably, the BJP too joined the chorus of voices against the Congress.
"Whatever needs to be done for women in Bihar is being done by the government. But the Congress, which is worried about its prospects in the upcoming assembly polls, has shown its ideological bankruptcy. Its leader Rahul Gandhi has been notorious for lacking a sense of propriety. The trait seems to have afflicted the party, in which sycophancy reigns supreme," BJP spokesman Kuntal Krishna alleged.
Congress leader Alka Lamba countered the criticism, by trying to turn the needle on the question of women having to use cloth during their menstruation cycle.
"In the modern era, the question is not why Rahul Gandhi's photos are there on the packets. The question is why our daughters in Bihar are still compelled to use pieces of cloth during their menstruation cycle, and fall ill. The BJP has always had an anti-women mindset," she said.
Bihar will go to polls later this year.

Protests erupt over smart meters, tariff hikes
Vijayawada: A massive protest spearheaded by the CPM against the implementation of smart electricity meters and soaring power tariffs rocked Vijayawada on Friday. Hundreds of consumers and activists converged at APCPDCL head office, submitting over 50,000 applications to demand the removal of installed smart meters, a reduction in electricity adjustment charges, and the cancellation of agreements with corporate entities like Adani and SECI. The protestors creatively displayed the 50,000 applications around the CPDCL office, with many wearing placards around their necks declaring 'No Smart Meters'. Women, particularly incensed, wore their petitions to express their anger. Loud slogans denouncing smart meters, Adani's alleged exploitation, and the burden imposed by the rulers filled the air. CPM leaders asserted that the current coalition government has betrayed the public on electricity, imposing a staggering Rs 15,485 crore in adjustment charges despite promises of no hikes. They highlighted how small industries and businesses are struggling to pay bills, leading to closures and job losses. Speakers criticised the government for ordering the installation of Adani smart meters, calling it 'deplorable' given that coalition leaders previously advocated for their destruction. The protest also condemned the replacement of two crore working meters with prepaid Adani smart meters, imposing Rs 25,000 crore burden on citizens, to be collected over 93 months. 'These aren't just smart meters; they're like Adani bombs, exploding in every home every month,' warned a CPM leader, referring to the technology that allows Adani offices in Gujarat and Delhi to control meters remotely. Recalling the year 2000 electricity protests where three activists were killed in Hyderabad, leaders warned that interfering with 'power (electricity)' had cost Chandrababu 'power (authority)' then. They urged the government to reduce charges, halt smart meter installations, cancel corporate agreements, and honour their promises, or face a widespread, unified movement across the State.

‘Big Beautiful Bill' passes US Congress
Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday secured a major political victory when Congress narrowly passed his flagship tax and spending bill, cementing his radical second-term agenda and boosting funds for his anti-immigration drive. The bill underlined the President's dominance over the Republican Party, which had been wracked by misgivings over a text that will balloon the national debt and gut health and welfare support. A small group of opponents in the party finally fell into line after Speaker Mike Johnson worked through the night to corral dissenters in the House of Representatives behind the "One Big Beautiful Bill." The bill squeezed past a final vote 218-214, meaning it can be on Mr. Trump's desk to be signed into law on the July 4th Independence Day holiday. "One of the most consequential Bills ever. The USA is the 'HOTTEST' Country in the World, by far!!!" Trump said on social media as he scented victory. The timing of the vote slipped back as Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke against the bill for nearly nine hours to delay proceedings. The legislative win is the latest in a series of successes for Trump, including a Supreme Court ruling last week that curbed lone judges from blocking his policies, and US air strikes that led to a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. His sprawling mega-bill just passed the Senate on Tuesday and had to return to the lower chamber for a rubber stamp of the senators' revisions. The package honours many of Trump's campaign promises: boosting military spending, funding a mass migrant deportation drive and committing $4.5 trillion to extend his first-term tax relief. "Today we are laying a key cornerstone of America's new Golden Age," Johnston said. But it is expected to pile an extra $3.4 trillion over a decade onto the country's fast-growing deficits, while shrinking the federal food assistance program and forcing through the largest cuts to the Medicaid health insurance scheme for low-income Americans since its 1960s launch.
