'Slow Horses' just got a worrying development — but I'm confident the spy thriller will survive
"Slow Horses" season 5 will officially mark the end of an era for the Apple TV Plus spy thriller. In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Will Smith revealed he's stepping down from the show at the end of season 5. Which, since that season has now entered the post-production phase of its life cycle, means his time with the show has come to an end. 'There were certainly some private tears,' the writer told Deadline. 'Series [season] 5, it doesn't end things by any means, but it concludes certain story arcs that started in season 1, so it felt like a good moment to hand over the show.' In retrospect, we already had some hints that this news was coming. When Apple announced "Slow Horses" season 6, the press release didn't mention Smith anywhere. But given that his comments at the time indicated plenty more of Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb was to come, nobody batted an eye. But when Apple also left Smith's name out of the season 7 announcement, that caught some people's attention, myself included. Still, it was brushed aside as Smith simply stepping back on the writing of that season, rather than away from the show entirely. Still, it seems Smith has the right perspective on the situation. "I do want to emphasize, it's not in any way that I thought I'm now too good for 'Slow Horses,'" he stated. "It's much more that I want to keep being good enough for 'Slow Horses.' And I would never want it to be like, 'Oh, that one wasn't quite there.' It's just that risk of just pushing it too far. And I just felt, I just want to go when I know I'm still delivering my very, very best for all the people that work on the show.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Look, there's no beating around the bush: Smith was not Slough House material. He was at the top of his game, unlike the sometimes bumbling rejects or washed-up spies he wrote about. He even finally took home an Emmy last year for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series. Apple TV Plus is the home of original shows like "Severance," "Ted Lasso" and "Slow Horses." You also get original movies, with "F1: The Movie" coming later this year. Get your first week free! So losing him could not just be the end of an era for the show — it could mark the beginning of the show's decline. However, I'm hopeful for two reasons. First, with all due respect to Smith, "Slow Horses" is an adaptation, meaning that the source material that originally developed this world and these characters remains unchanged. This isn't like when Benioff and Weiss went off script in "Game of Thrones." Second, Smith has clearly been out of the lead role for a while now, but is only just revealing the news. That leads me to believe that he and the show's production team have a plan in place and people they trust to continue the work at the same caliber once Smith is gone. If it were any other show, I'd be gravely concerned. But "Slow Horses" is such a finely tuned machine — producing three seasons at any given time — that I'm going to trust they know what they are doing until I'm proven otherwise. 'Slow Horses' Confirms Major Change as 'Unbelievable' Thriller Returns with 'Captivating' Season 5
Gary Oldman's notorious Jackson Lamb and his dysfunctional team of MI5 agents are back to investigate more crimes, with Slow Horses season five coming to our screens this September. But, fans of the Apple TV+ show can expect major changes after that, as this will be the last series showrunner Will Smith—who has been with the series since the very start—is involved in. Smith confirmed that the upcoming season would be his last, telling Deadline: "Season five, it doesn't end things by any means, but it concludes certain story arcs that started in season one, so it felt like a good moment to hand over the show." On why he decided to step back at this point, the writer said: "There's two things: one, there's the risk that you'll start to run dry or repeat, which you have to watch. And so, it's just getting ahead of that, and knowing when the right time is for you to give it over to somebody who can give it some new energy and freshness." He continued: "And then it's likely that the schedule of it just becomes something that can be slightly daunting after a while. It feels like I might not be giving you my best work if I continue at this pace. "I do want to emphasize, it's not in any way that I thought I'm now too good for Slow Horses. It's much more that I want to keep being good enough for Slow Horses. "And I would never want it to be like, 'Oh, that one wasn't quite there.' It's just that risk of just pushing it too far. And I just felt, I just want to go when I know I'm still delivering my very, very best for all the people that work on the show." The new season will arrive on the streaming platform on September 24, and will be an adaptation of Mick Herron's 2018 novel London Rules. This is the fifth novel and sixth story in the Slough House series. It's also the sequel to Spook Street, which was the basis for season four of the show. Season 6 and 7 of Slow Horses were recently confirmed, with Gaby Chiappe and Ben Vanstone taking on writing duties for each season respectively. That means there's lots more Slow Horses for fans to enjoy, even if it will be a little different. Slow Horses starts on Apple TV+ on September 24. SUBSCRIBE HERE

YouTube's Lofi Girl Graduates After Studying for 7 Years
Originally appeared on E! Online This calls for music to celebrate/chill to. Lofi Girl—the animated star of the popular YouTube channel of the same name, which provides users with a 24/7 livestream of lo-fi hip-hop music—has graduated from her seemingly infinite loop of studying after seven years. In a video posted to TikTok July 29, the cute character traded in her iconic headphones for a graduation cap while holding up a laptop reading, "THE END." "Finally, finished with all my homework," an audio track, taken from the Disney Channel show A.N.T. Farm, played in the background. "I don't know what I learned, but I'm done learning." Needless to say, longtime listeners were thrilled with her big milestone, with YouTube's verified TikTok account writing in the comments section, "girl congratulations and we MEAN THAT." Meanwhile, a message from Duolingo Brazil—whose owl mascot "died" earlier this year before being resurrected from the dead—read, "End of an era." Indeed, Lofi Girl has been doing her schoolwork for quite some time. The Studio Ghibli–inspired animation of her perpetually studying popped up on YouTube in March 2018, accompanying a livestream of what's described in the video title as "Lofi hip hop mix - Beats to Relax/Study to." The stream was briefly halted 2020 and 2022 due to copyright complaints. YouTube later confirmed that the takedown requests were bogus and reinstated the long-running video, with Lofi Girl continuing to study at her desk as her cat stared out the window. More from E!
