Health minister seeks details of vehicles used, costs
Vijayawada: Minister for medical, health and family welfare Y Satya Kumar Yadav directed officials on Saturday to provide detailed information on vehicles used by the department and the annual expenditure incurred on their operation. The medical and health department, one of the state's largest with nearly one lakh employees, has faced reports of vehicle shortages in some areas and misuse in others, prompting the minister's decision. Government vehicles are currently deployed for official duties at the Secretariat and across 10 key branches of the health department. Various health and welfare programmes are implemented at the field level under the supervision of 4 zonal offices and 52 district-level officials. The department manages approximately 1,700 Primary Health Centres (PHCs), 242 secondary hospitals (including district hospitals, area hospitals, and community health centres), 40 medical colleges with affiliated teaching hospitals, and other specialty hospitals, all supported by medical and administrative staff. Under the National Health Mission (NHM), around 30,000 officers and staff execute approximately 40 health schemes at the grassroots level, necessitating significant vehicle use. Satya Kumar Yadav instructed officials to submit a report within one week detailing the rules governing vehicle allocation and usage, the total number of government vehicles in use, annual expenditure on these vehicles, department-wise spending (including the Secretariat and other wings), officers assigned vehicles for full-time use, vehicles used for general duties versus field operations, expenditure for the financial years 2023–24 and 2024–25, existing guidelines to prevent vehicle misuse, documented misuse incidents, and actions taken. He further directed officials to conduct a thorough review of vehicle usage and propose reforms to enhance efficiency and accountability within the department.

NHM launches ‘stop diarrhoea' campaign
Lucknow: To keep diarrhoea — the leading cause of death among children under five — at bay, especially in the rainy season, the National Health Mission (NHM) rolled out the 'stop diarrhoea' campaign on Thursday. Aimed at raising awareness about diarrhoea, the campaign began with mission director, NHM Dr Pinky Jowel flagging off a promotional vehicle from the urban community health centre, Indira Nagar. She also launched an ORS/zinc corner and a signature campaign. She encouraged everyone to come forward by planting a tree. "This promotional vehicle, equipped with posters/banners and audio/video messages about prevention, causes, treatment and prevention of diarrhoea, will travel to various areas of the capital to raise public awareness about diarrhoea," said CMO, Lucknow, Dr NB Singh. To note, if a child experiences diarrhoea three or more times a day they should be given an ORS solution immediately to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance along with contacting the nearest health centre. Experts also emphasised the importance of zinc tablets, which should be administered to the child along with ORS. "While ORS helps to rehydrate the body, zinc reduces the duration of diarrhoea and strengthens the child's immunity. It is also crucial to continue breastfeeding during diarrhoea, as mother's milk provides nutrition and strength to the child," said GM child health, NHM Dr Milind Vardhan.

State launches drive to prevent diarrhoea
Guwahati: Assam on Thursday launched the "Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2025" to ensure preventive measures to combat the disease amid floods and rain. Even though diarrhoea has been controlled to a great extent in Assam and no outbreak has been recorded this year, health department officials said it is crucial to monitor the situation in July and Aug. The 'Diarrhoea Prevention Programme' started in the Kamrup Metropolitan District on Thursday. This programme, which will run until Aug 25, was inaugurated at the Satgaon State Ayushman Arogya Mandir by Dr Manoj Choudhury, executive director of the National Health Mission, Assam. To ensure that no child succumbs to diarrhoea, parents are being made aware. Awareness events are also being held at district Anganwadi centres and schools to educate students about the importance of using toilets, washing hands properly, and consuming safe drinking water. Under the programme, ORS and zinc tablets are being distributed among all children aged 0-5 years. ASHA workers in the district will go door-to-door to raise awareness and distribute these medicines.
