Over 200kg of illegal meat, cigarettes and alcohol seized from vans in North West London

Yahoo20-02-2025
Illegal meat, cigarettes and alcohol found in vehicles have been seized and destroyed following an investigation into five vehicles which were blocking pavements and driveways in North West London.
Over 200kg of illegally imported meat was found in three vans and two trailers which were inspected on Parr Road, Stanmore, on the morning of Saturday, February 8. Around 400 packs of cigarettes and eight litres of alcohol were also found in the vehicles.
Complaints had been made about the vehicles which were blocking pavements and driveways on Parr Road. An investigation, by police and Harrow Council, found that these vehicles were waiting to unload and pick up goods to be taken abroad.

The seized goods have now been destroyed. Those involved have been warned and officers will continue to monitor the activity.
Cllr Pritesh Patel, Cabinet Member for Cleaner Streets and Public Protection said: 'We're continuing to crackdown on illegal imports that put public health at risk and make it unfair on businesses operating legally.
"I'd like to thank officers and our partners for the work carried out in this operation.
'It's the job of our officers to ensure public safety and that food operators and traders are complying with the law. We will continue to work with our partners to keep Harrow safe and take the necessary actions on such activities.'

Tesco 'install new anti-shoplifting devices' on shelves- but customers confused how they work

Tesco's new anti-shoplifting measures have left customers bewildered. The new contraptions have been captured in a video posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, which has left the internet in a frenzy. The clear plastic covers can be seen positioned in front of a shelf of chocolate products.. In the video, customers are able to freely slide them left and right to uncover the products underneath. The covers make a loud screeching noise when moved. It would seem that they would make it harder to access the items quickly, although Tesco has not yet confirmed how the new covers are meant to work. It is also not yet clear if the new contraptions have been rolled out in all stories or just a certain selection of them. ( kirkpap1 ) — London & UK Street News (@CrimeLdn) March 14, 2025 The video posted to X has been causing quite a commotion - amassing 1.3k comments and 6.3k likes in about a day-and-a-half. One commenter posted: "So how can you actually get the item? They do not have enough staff to be getting these items for people." Another pointed out: "What's stopping someone from simply prying the damn things open and taking what they want?" However, another user had one potential theory behind the new plastic covers. They posted: "They take your fingerprints if you steal and build a case to which they don't have to chase you across the parking lot thus avoiding public videos and backlash on the shopping establishment" Another theory suggested that the loud noise the covers make when slid was meant to attract staff members. Perhaps the most likely theory posted was that they had been installed to slow thieves down and deter "flash mob robberies." Shoplifting offences in London have soared by 50 per cent according to the latest figures. The Met Police documented 78,512 cases of shoplifting in the year leading up to September - a significant rise from 52,478 offences recorded the previous year. Across England and Wales, police forces reported a total of 493,000 offences in this same period - a 23 per cent increase from the 402,000 incidents in the prior 12 months. Trade Association British Retail Consortium has described the situation as shoplifting "spiralling out of control", citing their survey that indicates over 2,000 incidents occurring daily, including assaults on staff, threats with weapons, and racial and sexual abuse. Tesco Stores has not yet commented on the new anti-shoplifting measures. Got a story? Please get in touch at Get the top stories from across London directly to your inbox. Suspect in Fitzrovia murder urged to surrender 17 years after fleeing to Yemen

The father of a woman raped and killed almost two decades ago is urging the main suspect to surrender after fleeing the UK for the Middle East. Police believe Farouk Abdulhak murdered 23-year-old Martine Vik Magnussen following a night out with friends at Soho members' club Maddox on March 14, 2008. The Norwegian student's body was found amongst rubble in the basement of a property on Great Portland Street, Westminster, two days later. A post-mortem revealed she had been sexually assaulted and died from compression to the neck. Abdulhak, who was spotted on the club's CCTV with Martine, fled to Egypt hours after her death. He then continued on to Yemen, where it is thought he still lives. He said: "On March 8, International Women's Day, I was once again painfully reminded that my daughter, Martine Vik Magnussen, was brutally raped and murdered in London in 2008. 'For 17 years, justice has been denied as Farouk Abdulhak remains a free man in Yemen. Violence against women and girls is a crisis that affects families worldwide and Martine's case is a stark reminder that justice delayed is justice denied. 'Martine's voice was silenced, but we must not be silent for her.' Detectives have also released an up to date image of him as part of the investigation into Farouk's whereabouts. The photo shows an older Farouk with glasses, a beard and short black hair. Speaking directly to his suspect, detective inspector Jim Barry, of The Met's Specialist Crime Command, said: "You have been running and hiding for 17 years. You participated in a BBC documentary, providing your explanation as to what happened. "It is time to grow up and face your responsibilities to Martine and her family. Come to the UK now and explain all to a court and jury. Our pursuit of you will not stop.' Get the top stories from across London directly to your inbox.
