Captain Colwill backs Cardiff for League One title

BBC News15 hours ago
Rubin Colwill can sometimes seem like a player who is destined to forever be talked about as a star of the future, a talent of huge – if unfulfilled – potential. At 23 years old, he is hardly a grizzled old veteran but, with more than 150 Cardiff City appearances to his name, Colwill is no novice either.Great expectations have followed the attacking midfielder since he first broke into the Bluebirds' first team as an 18-year-old in 2021 and the hype only intensified when he was named in Wales' squad for the European Championship later that year.It was easy to see why there was such excitement. Here was a physically imposing teenager who could dribble past an opponent, play an incisive pass or pick out the top corner with a long-range missile.Jurgen Klopp, whose Liverpool side he scored against during an FA Cup tie at Anfield, was among those to express their admiration for Colwill. But his progress has been frustratingly stop-start since then. There have been growing pains – literally, with a late growth spurt causing injury – and losses of confidence or form which have seen him drop in and out of Cardiff teams and Wales squads. Now, Colwill is at something of a crossroads in his career and looks primed to grasp his opportunity.Following Cardiff's relegation from the Championship last season, Colwill was named vice-captain to new skipper Calum Chambers, as voted by their team-mates.As Chambers was suspended for Saturday's League One opener at home to Peterborough United, Colwill led his boyhood club for the first time – and rose to the challenge. He scored a stunning 20-yard free-kick to bring the Bluebirds level in a 2-1 win, the highlight of a man-of-the-match performance in which he backed up his usual creativity and flair in attack with energy and grit out of possession."It was a great day. I think not just personally but I think for everybody involved," said Colwill."We all want to play exciting football, play attacking football, be on the front foot, win the ball back. We're all buying into that."On wearing the armband, he added: "It was nice, it was a big responsibility."I thought through what I needed to do, what was required of me but yeah once you almost accept that responsibility I think it's almost freeing to have that on your shoulders and to try and help everybody get through the game."I think that responsibility, maturity is something that comes naturally when you're around it long enough. I'm probably one of the more experienced players in the squad now. So it almost comes naturally with time, experience, and I think it's just something that I like to do."
Colwill was one of seven Cardiff academy graduates in new head coach Brian Barry-Murphy's starting line-up for his first game in charge against Peterborough, the youngest team the Bluebirds have fielded for a league fixture this century. That faith in youth – with a further three academy products on the bench – was as strikingly in contrast to Barry-Murphy's predecessors as the Irishman's adventurous style of play.Cardiff saw 11 senior players leave following their relegation from the Championship and have not yet signed anyone this summer, although they are targeting four new recruits. The Bluebirds were in the Premier League as recently as 2019 and League One has been home to many fallen top-flight teams in recent years, including last season's runaway champions Birmingham City.Whereas the Blues spent heavily – with striker Jay Stansfield alone costing £15m – Cardiff will not have those kinds of funds available as they look to promote from within."I think what we're doing is probably very different to what Birmingham have done," said Colwill."They spent a lot of money, brought a lot of players in and I think we've almost, not gone the other way, but we've almost trusted in what we've got is good enough, and it is good enough."I'm fully confident in every player in our changing room that we're capable of winning this league and getting promoted."Colwill has spent his entire career at Cardiff and, although he could probably have joined a club in a higher division this summer, he felt a responsibility to stay."I like to be a part of something, and to be an integral part of what we're trying to achieve at my boyhood club is very important to me," he said."I think we can do something really special this year, use everybody this year, the academy boys, all the lads that have been here for two or three years, the ups and the lot of lows we probably had the last couple of years and turn it all around. I think it can be really special for all of us."Speaking of special, Colwill's younger brother Joel made his first league start for Cardiff alongside him on Saturday."This has been our dream since we were like five, six years old, and to be able to do it together, I think sometimes we don't realise how rare and how special it is to be able to play with your brother," Colwill the elder said."Lots of brothers play for different teams and stuff, but to be able to grow up with each other, play for the same teams, and then do it for the first team is incredible."

Rangers boss Martin has no regrets over brutal take-down of Ibrox stars... and insists he expects the right response in European tie against Plzen

Russell Martin insists he harbours no concerns about the possible impact of his scathing assessment of Rangers ' performance against Motherwell. Despite leading through skipper James Tavernier's early goal at Fir Park, the visitors were overrun in the second half and dropped two points on the Premiership's opening day when Emmanuel Longelo struck for the Steelmen with three minutes remaining. Pulling no punches afterwards, Martin questioned the mentality of many of his charges, accusing them slipping into 'self-preservation mode' and having 'too much ego'. Two days after the event, though, the 39-year-old was in no mood to take a backwards step. Declaring himself to be entirely comfortable with uttering such harsh words so early in the season, Martin said he wasn't concerned that his actions might have not the desired effect on certain individuals. 'I think if it has a detrimental effect on certain individuals, then they're probably not the ones we want to come on the journey with us,' he stated. 'So, I think if it has a detrimental effect on you and it hurts you to the point where you feel singled out, then there's probably an issue with you being all in at this place and this club and with us. 'I don't have any worry about it being detrimental on the team. Whenever I've questioned any of our teams in the past about attitude, the response has been fantastic. And then the problems have been maybe technical and ability. 'I've not said one thing addressing them and then told you (the media) another thing. 'So, I guess this is where you learn a lot about people. I'm really comfortable if I say that because I know where it comes from. It's not a concerted effort to out anyone or to try and beat someone. We're not. 'I think I'm just always going to be honest with the players and the supporters.' Martin also doesn't fear that one consequence of his words might be that the club becomes hampered with several unhappy players. 'No, I don't think so,' he added. 'There's plenty of time before the end of the window. 'I'm pretty sure all the players in here want to be part of something. And if not, at the end of it, if they don't want to be here, I don't want to force anyone to be at the football club. And it's up to their agents to find the right people for them and for us.' Since Saturday, the manager said he'd received a number of texts from people close to the club who fully approved of his decision to go public with his criticisms after just one league game. 'I had a lot of messages from people who were associated with this club who were really supportive of it,' he added. 'I think they understand when they've been in this building, they understand what's required and what quite hasn't quite been there over the last few seasons for whatever reason.' Martin yesterday completed the £3million signing of Oliver Antman, with the Finnish winger arriving from Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles. Antman is the ninth recruit of the summer. Speaking to RangersTV, the 23-year-old said: 'When I first heard Rangers were interested I was excited. It's a huge club, one of the most successful clubs in Europe and the world, and you don't get this kind of opportunity many times in your life.' Rangers were last night trying to register Antman and Mikey Moore in time to face Viktoria Plzen in the first leg of the Champions League third round qualifier. Neither Hamza Igamane or Thelo Aasgaard are yet fit enough to be considered for tonight's clash. Meanwhile, Rangers will face Club Brugge or Salzburg in the play-off round if they can get past the Czechs. Either side would make for a tough opponent. The Belgians finished runners-up in their domestic league, won the Belgian Cup and reached the last 16 of the Champions League. Martin's men drew 2-2 with them in a pre-season friendly. Last season, Salzburg were also second in their league and finished third bottom of the 36-team Champions League group.

Raheem Sterling's latest brutal Chelsea snub proves there is no way back for him under Enzo Maresca - with forward training away from first-team squad

Raheem Sterling tops a list of nine Chelsea players who have been brutally banished from Enzo Maresca 's first-team - and from the club's website. Sterling, 30, and his fellow outcasts do not feature in Maresca's plans next season and as such, none of them have a profile or photo in the Blues' first-team section. The forward spent the previous campaign on loan at Arsenal and Chelsea are actively working to ship him out permanently during the summer window. He moved to Stamford Bridge from Manchester City just three years ago in a deal worth a little under £50million, having won four Premier League titles at the Etihad. However, his stint at Chelsea rapidly unfolded into a nightmare, resulting in him making a last-ditch switch to North London, where he scored one goal in 27 matches. Maresca has made it clear that Sterling is not included in his plans and the clock is now ticking as the Blues look to find buyers for their unwanted players. Mail Sport reported that those up for sale, such as Sterling and left back Ben Chilwell, are expected to continue training separately to Maresca's main group. Chelsea have spent big this summer, splashing the cash on forwards Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens from Brighton and Borussia Dortmund respectively. That resulted in Sterling slipping further away from the first-team picture - and off the website. Two other players who do not have profiles, Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu, are set to join Premier League newcomers Burnley after a day of breakthroughs. Their exact fees have not yet been confirmed but are likely to be around £20m each. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is another on his way out. Indeed, as reported by Mail Sport, Everton began talks over a deal worth an inital £25m plus add-ons. The midfielder set Chelsea back £30m when they swooped to bring him in from Leicester City last season, but he made just two top-flight starts under Maresca. Academy graduate Alfie Gilchrist is also missing a first-team profile on the website, joining Axel Disasi, Carney Chukwuemeka, Renato Veiga and David Datro Fofana in the doldrums, and on the edge of Maresca's bloated senior group. Officially, there are 31 players currently listed as first-teamers. However, several big names who have made the cut could also find themselves leaving before the window slams shut on September 1, such as Christopher Nkunku. Mykhailo Mudryk has been given a profile photo despite being charged by the FA for violating its anti-doping rules after failing a drugs test. He faces a four-year ban. Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 and cannot train.
