Disneyland celebrates 70 years of magic - from napkin sketch to global icon

Walt Disney unveiled his ambitious plan to the world for a theme park unlike any other 70 years ago as Disneyland opened its gate in Anaheim, California, 70 years ago today
It began with a dream and a sketch on a napkin.

Seventy years ago today, Walt Disney unveiled his audacious vision to the world - a theme park unlike any other, a place where fantasy met reality, and children and adults alike could escape into storybook worlds. On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened its gates in Anaheim, California, becoming known as 'the happiest place on earth'. Walt Disney, already an icon thanks to Mickey Mouse and Snow White, stood proudly alongside the park's creators in Los Angeles in 1954, poring over blueprints and pointing to pencil-drawn dreams. In one photo, he is seen waving a baton over sketches of Fantasyland, Adventureland, and Tomorrowland. By the following summer, the dream was ready to become reality.

On Opening Day, Disneyland welcomed a capacity crowd of 28,000 guests, though the day was famously chaotic. The weather was scorching, the drinks ran dry, and a plumber's strike meant either drinking fountains or toilets - Disney chose toilets.
But none of that mattered to the crowd or to Disney. Beaming Walt rode down Main Street in a horse-drawn carriage flanked by two children, waving to visitors and passing the Frontier Trading Post.
Just around the corner, actress Adelle August played the role of Esmeralda, the fortune teller, adding to the carnival-like celebration. Among the star-studded guests that day was actor and future US President Ronald Reagan, who joined fellow Hollywood figures in christening the park.

A photo from the time captures him smiling in the sunshine, just hours before Cinderella's horse-drawn coach glided past visitors during the Opening Day Parade. The rides that day included the gleaming white Mark Twain Riverboat churning through the manmade waters of Frontierland.
From the air, Disneyland looked compact at just 160 acres but set alight with ambition. An aerial photo taken in 1955 reveals the park nestled among orange groves and flat farmland, far from the sprawl of present-day Anaheim.

Inside the gates, guests sipped on sarsaparilla and cherry phosphate at The Parlour on Main Street, while treating themselves to parfaits and 'Lover's Delight' ice cream sundaes. Over the decades, Disneyland would grow and evolve, with Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion joining the roster of attractions.
But its heart never changed from Disney's dream of a place where 'age relives fond memories of the past… and youth may savour the challenge and promise of the future.'
A poignant image from the 1960s captures him on the lawn before the Magic Kingdom's castle, sitting with his grandson, not as a tycoon but like any other grandfather at the park.

Behind them, Sleeping Beauty's Castle is seen, which today remains the enduring symbol of a park that became a cultural cornerstone.
Today, Disneyland's influence stretches far beyond Anaheim, with Disney parks on three continents. But it's that original vision that continues to define the magic. As Walt Disney once said: 'Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.'

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' scores Marvel's first $100 million box office opening of 2025

Marvel's first family has finally found box office gold. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' the first film about the superheroes made under the guidance of Kevin Feige and the Walt Disney Co., earned $118 million in its first weekend in 4,125 North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. That makes it the fourth biggest opening of the year, behind 'A Minecraft Movie,' 'Lilo & Stitch' and 'Superman,' and the biggest Marvel opening since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' grossed $211 million out of the gate last summer. Internationally, 'Fantastic Four' made $100 million from 52 territories, adding up to a $218 million worldwide debut. The numbers were within the range the studio was expecting. The film arrived in the wake of another big superhero reboot, James Gunn's 'Superman,' which opened three weekends ago and has already crossed $500 million globally. That film, from the other main player in comic book films, DC Studios, took second place with $24.9 million domestically. 'First Steps' is the latest attempt at bringing the superhuman family to the big screen, following lackluster performances for other versions. The film, based on the original Marvel comics, is set during the 1960s in a retro-futuristic world led by the Fantastic Four, a family of astronauts-turned-superhuman from exposure to cosmic rays during a space mission. The family is made up of Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), who can stretch his body to incredible lengths; Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), who can render herself invisible; Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), who transforms into a fiery human torch; and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), who possesses tremendous superhuman strength with his stone-like flesh. The movie takes place four years after the family gained powers, during which Reed's inventions have transformed technology, and Sue's diplomacy has led to global peace. Both audiences and critics responded positively to the film, which currently has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and promising exit poll responses from opening weekend ticket buyers. An estimated 46% of audiences chose to see it on premium screens, including IMAX and other large formats. The once towering Marvel is working to rebuild audience enthusiasm for its films and characters. Its two previous offerings this year did not reach the cosmic box office heights of 'Deadpool & Wolverine," which made over $1.3 billion, or those of the 'Avengers'-era. But critically, the films have been on an upswing since the poorly reviewed 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which ultimately grossed $415 million worldwide. ' Thunderbolts," which jumpstarted the summer movie season, was better received critically but financially is capping out at just over $382 million globally. Like Deadpool and Wolverine, the Fantastic Four characters had been under the banner of 20th Century Fox for years. The studio produced two critically loathed, but decently profitable attempts in the mid-2000s with future Captain America Chris Evans as the Human Torch. In 2015, it tried again (unsuccessfully) with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller. They got another chance after Disney's $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets in 2019. Top 10 movies by domestic box office With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore: 1. 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' $118 million. 2. 'Superman,' $24.9 million. 3. 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' $13 million. 4. 'F1: The Movie,' $6.2 million. 5. 'Smurfs,' $5.4 million. 6. 'I Know What You Did Last Summer,' $5.1 million. 7. 'How to Train Your Dragon,' $2.8 million. 8. 'Eddington,' $1.7 million. 9. 'Saiyaara,' $1.3 million. 10. 'Oh, Hi!,' $1.1 million.

The 30 best films on Disney+ to watch now

With Disney+, the clue is very much in the name: there's a lot more on there than just the classic catalogue we'd usually call Disney. Following their acquisitions of Pixar (2006), Marvel (2009), Lucasfilm (2012), and – biggest of all – 20th Century Fox (2019), the service went live with all of those separate coffers jam-packed. Many families own it chiefly for animated favourites old and new, so I've devoted about half of this list to cherry-picking those. Every Star Wars sequel (plus the TV spin-offs) is available, of course; ditto every entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've only picked one favourite apiece in those canons, but franchise devotees will doubtless know their way around that content already. What's less foregrounded is some of the more adult-targeted Fox content, from a pretty broad range of genres, so this dominates the back end of my list. Yes, Avatar and its sequel are streamable, too, but there's a lot more to the studio's back catalogue than effects blockbusters. It would be a real blessing if Disney would license Fox's golden oldies – couldn't we have Laura (1944) or My Darling Clementine (1946) or All About Eve (1950)? For the time being, though, there's some splendid rummaging to be done in the past half-century. Skip to: Animation Musicals Comedy/Drama Fantasy and Sci-fi War Animation Moana (2016)

Rebel Wilson reveals she's suffered second family tragedy just months after the heartbreaking loss of her beloved grandfather

Rebel Wilson has shared a tribute to her beloved grandmother after the matriarch's death at age 95 this weekend. The 45-year-old made the heartbreaking announcement alongside an Instagram reel showing an array of images of her nan and family, including wife Ramona Agruma. 'Goodbye to my incredible Grandma Gar - the BEST grandmother ever,' the Pitch Perfect star began in a lengthy caption. 'She passed away at 95 years old. Her favourite movie was The Wizard of Oz because when she was a young girl she was banned by her father from seeing it for being "naughty". But years later, she finally got to watch it,' she continued. 'She used to keep a scrapbook of news clippings of my career because she was so proud and even last night was telling paramedics about me as she was being taken to hospital - recounting her glorious holiday on the Queen Mary that I had given her as a present when I had started making it big in Hollywood. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'When I was 11, she took me and my sister to America. It was one of the best weeks of my entire life. We took her on SPACE MOUNTAIN at Disneyland saying "it's not that scary Gar!" and she screamed the entire way down holding on for dear life.' Rebel went on: 'I'm glad her last 'big' outing was to our wedding at the Opera House. She loved watching tennis, musicals, neenish tarts, but most importantly she LOVED her family - her children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren. 'She leaves behind an incredible legacy. She had a hair salon back in the day when few women owned businesses. 'She endured so much in her life and was always so kind and sweet. To me she is a Queen and I proudly carry her royal name of Elizabeth. Love you Gar and love to all my family at this very sad time.' The loss comes just months after Rebel's grandfather died at the age of 97 in December. Sharing a photo of herself and her elderly relative on Instagram at the time, Rebel wrote, 'RIP Poppy - 97 years young. The best grandpa!' Rebel's grandma was able to see her marry wife Ramona at the couple's second wedding in Australia in December. The actress confirmed the news on her Instagram, sharing a series of photos of the couple after they legally tied the knot in her hometown. 'It meant my 94-year-old grandmother Gar could come, which was very special to us to have her included, and it just felt right to do it in my hometown at this glorious time of the year!' Rebel wrote at the time Rebel revealed her sister Liberty officiated the wedding, which was attended by their closest family and friends. 'My sister Liberty officiated our legal wedding in Sydney!' she wrote at the time. 'It meant my 94-year-old grandmother Gar could come, which was very special to us to have her included, and it just felt right to do it in my hometown at this glorious time of the year!' Rebel and Ramona first tied the knot in Sardinia, Italy, on September 28 last year, and daughter Royce was their flower girl. It was the perfect fairytale location for the couple to exchange vows as they notably holidayed in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, just days after going Instagram official with their romance in 2022. The Bridesmaids actress and her partner were reportedly supposed to get married in a 2025 beach wedding but Rebel decided to move up the date. The couple first met in 2021 and announced their engagement in February 2023.
