Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football
The new-look 32-team tournament started earlier this month, with the final taking place at the MetLife Stadium in New York on July 13. The Premier League resumes a month later, with Liverpool kicking off their title defence in the opening game of the season against Bournemouth on August 15. 16 teams remain. The road to #FIFACWC glory is set. 🛣️🏆 — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 27, 2025 Klopp has previously spoken about issues such as fixture congestion and in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag, he suggested the Club World Cup will not provide any 'real recovery' for those players involved. 'It's all about the game and not the surrounding events – and that's why the Club World Cup is the worst idea ever implemented in football in this regard,' Klopp said. 'People who have never had or do not have anything to do with day-to-day business any more are coming up with something. 'There is insane money for participating, but it's also not for every club. 'Last year it was the Copa (America) and the European Championship, this year it's the Club World Cup, and next year the World Cup. That means no real recovery for the players involved, neither physically nor mentally.' Klopp has expressed his concern about the Club World Cup (Martin Rickett/PA) After leaving his role as Reds boss last summer, Klopp became Red Bull's head of global soccer at the start of 2025. He added: 'I have serious fears that players will suffer injuries they've never had before next season. If not next season, then it will happen at the World Cup or afterwards. 'We constantly expect the players to go into every game as if it were their last. We tell them that 70 or 75 times a year. But it can't go on like this. 'We have to make sure they have breaks, because if they don't get them, they won't be able to deliver top performances – and if they can't achieve that any more, the entire product loses value.'

Man Utd lining up move for £6million Club World Cup keeper with Ruben Amorim keen to ship Andre Onana out on loan
MANCHESTER UNITED manager Ruben Amorim is willing to loan Andre Onana and find a new No 1. The Red Devils keeper's salary is so high it has been difficult to sell him after a poor season so the door is open to a temporary switch. 4 4 United are waiting for approaches this summer and would prefer a European club to come in rather than a Premier League rival. Ligue 1 Monaco have asked the question but even with their wealth it would still be a stretch to pay the Cameroonian's wages. Now a replacement for Onana, 29, is being worked on with Aston Villa's Emi Martinez, 32, a top target — but he would cost a big fee. The shot-stopper, who wants to stay and fight for his place, has amassed a total of 101 appearances with United since his £47million move from Inter Milan in 2023. Onana, whose deal runs until 2028, counts 24 clean sheets and has conceded 148 goals during his two-year spell in Manchester. Botafogo's John Victor is another option after catching the eye at the Fifa Club World Cup. The Red Devils were watching the Brazilian, 29, last summer but have yet to commit. However, he is open to any club in England and available at a bargain £6million. 4 Join SUN CLUB for the Man Utd Files every Thursday plus in-depth coverage and exclusives from Old Trafford Another potential recruit is 25-year-old Portugal international Diogo Costa, who has a £64million release clause in his Porto contract. Costa seems set to leave his homeland during this window and has 'dreams' of playing in the Premier League. Recent developments suggest that Porto are also on the hunt for a new goalkeeper, which boosts United's chances of securing him. Cruz Azul No 1 Kevin Mier, is on Porto 's shortlist and has been prioritised by club president and former Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas. Meanwhile, Real Betis also appear ready to receive a significant cash injection, potentially boosting their ability to afford United flop Antony. The Spanish side, who lost the Uefa Conference League final to Chelsea, are set to bag a £26m windfall with midfielder Johnny Cardoso on the brink of joining LaLiga rivals Atletico Madrid. 4
