Ivanna Baquero in "A Widow's Game."
Ivana Baquero — the star of Netflix's No. 1 movie A Widow's Game — got her showbiz break in 2006 thanks a lead role in a Guillermo del Toro classic. What else has she starred in?
Baquero stars as Maje in the A Widow's Game, which is currently the No. 1 film on the streamer's top 10 list of movies on the platform in the U.S. Netflix reported Tuesday that A Widow's Game also earned spots on Top 10 most-watched movie lists in 90 countries worldwide, amassing 15.4 million views since its debut on the streaming service on Friday, May 30.
A Widow's Game is based on the real-life case known as "The Black Widow of Patraix.' The official summary for the film reads, 'August 2017. In a parking lot in Valencia appears the body of a man, stabbed seven times. Everything points to a crime of passion.

'The Homicide Group of the city, with a veteran inspector at the head, starts an investigation against the clock that soon leads them to a suspect that no one expected: Maje, the young widow, sweet and serene, who had been married to the victim for less than a year.'
Born June 11, 1994, in Barcelona, Spain, Baquero made her screen debut in a supporting role in the 2004 Spanish-UK supernatural thriller Romasanta, which was followed by roles in two more feature films and two TV movies.
Baquero's breakthrough role, however, happened in 2006 when del Toro cast the young actor in the lead role in a film that went on to receive six Oscar nominations at the 2007 Academy Awards.
Set in 1944, Pan's Labyrinth stars Ivana Baquero as Ofelia, a 10-year-old girl who moves with her ailing, pregnant mother, Carmen (Ariadna Gil) to the Spanish countryside to live with Carmen's new husband, the brutal military dictator Captain Vidal (Sergi López).
As Ofelia befriends a mythical creature known as the Faun (Doug Jones), she learns that she is a reincarnated princess who is saddled with completely three daunting tasks before she can once again assume the throne. Jones also plays the haunting creature the Pale Man in the film.

Produced in Spain, Pan's Labyrinth was nominated for six Oscars in 2007, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Score for Javier Navarette and Best Original Screenplay for Guillermo del Toro.
Pan's Labyrinth won Oscars in the three other categories it was nominated in, including Best Makeup, Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction.
Baquero was also honored for her role as Ofelia, winning the Best New Actress honor at the Goya Awards, which is Spain's equivalent to the Oscars.
Baquero also won a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, USA and was nominated for Best Young Actress at the 2007 Critics Choice Awards.
Based on the best-selling The Sword of Shannara Trilogy of books by Terry Brooks, The Shannara Chronicles stars Ivana Baquero as Eretria opposites future Elvis and Dune: Part Two star Austin Butler.
In the series, Eretria is a human who teams with the Elven Princess Amberle (Poppy Drayton) and a half-human/half-elf, Wil (Butler) to fend off demons from taking over the environs known as the Four Lands.
Created by Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, The Shannara Chronicles ran for two seasons on MTV from 2016 to 2017. The series also starred James Remar (Dexter) and John Rhys-Davies (The Lord of the Rings/Indiana Jones series).
Alejandra Onieva and Ivanna Baquero in "High Seas."
A Netflix original Spanish series, High Seas stars Ivana Baquero as Eve Villanueva and Alejandra Onieva as her sister, Carolina, who while on a luxury cruise from Spain to Brazil in the 1940s investigate a series of mysterious murders aboard the ship.
High Seas ran for three seasons on Netflix from 2019 to 2020. The first and second seasons each featured eight episodes, while the third season concluded the series with six episodes.
Ivana Baquero stars opposite Evil Dead icon Bruce Campbell in the horror comedy Black Friday as Marnie, one of a small group of a large retail toy store who must fight off blood-thirsty shoppers infected with a parasites as the annual day-after-Thanksgiving sale gets underway.
Black Friday also stars Devon Sawa (the first movie in the Final Destination franchise) and Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight).
A Widow's Tale, starring Ivana Baquero, is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

We Finally Got a Madonna Biopic Update and...It's Complicated

For anyone still wondering whatever happened to that long-rumored Madonna biopic—yes, it's still happening. Sort of. Maybe. According to Julia Garner, the project is alive… it's just taking its sweet time. During a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, Garner confirmed that the highly anticipated film is 'supposed to still happen.' Garner has been attached to the Madonna role since 2022, hot off her run as Anna Delvey in Netflix's Inventing Anna. At the time, multiple outlets reported she was the pop icon's top pick after a competitive audition process that involved intense dance training—and performing in front of Madonna herself. 'It just came about… I knew they were making a movie about her and I went out to audition,' Garner explained of how she nabbed the role. 'I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it.' Her approach? Channel Madonna's own energy. 'I asked myself what Madonna would do—which is like, convince you she deserves to be in this room,' she said. 'And I owned it.' The biopic faced setbacks along the way. In early 2023, Variety reported that Universal had pulled back on development. Still, Madonna and Garner remained in touch. They were photographed together at Steven Klein's birthday party in May 2023, and in December of that year, Garner even joined Madonna onstage during a stop on her Brooklyn tour. Kevin Mazur/WireImage for Live Natio By July 2024, Madonna had shared that work on the script was back on, teasing a working title: Who's That Girl—a clear nod to her 1987 film and hit single of the same name. Then, in May 2025, Deadline reported that the project may have taken a new form entirely: a limited series at Netflix, now with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy attached. So, yes, the Madonna story is still coming. But whether it's a movie, a series or something else entirely… we'll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned. New on Netflix August 2-8: only four new shows and movies hit Netflix this week but one is huge

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It happens to the best of us: most weeks Netflix has such a long list of new releases that I can only cover a fraction in this weekly round-up, but now and then, there's barely enough to populate a list. Between Saturday, August 2 and Friday, August 8, only four new releases are joining Netflix's library, so my usual list is going to be a little shorter than usual. I only include brand-new Netflix Originals, not third-party titles added to the service, as these programmes are available worldwide. Sometimes the Netflix Originals I include are worthy of our lists of the best Netflix shows and best Netflix movies, and one of the new releases this week is a hugely-anticipated sequel series, so there's definitely going to be something to watch. So let's find you something worth watching on Netflix this week... Beyond the Bar Starting the week off (on a Saturday, which is rare for Netflix) is the new Korean drama series Beyond the Bar. This seems to have a strange release schedule which mirrors its Korean release: an episode every Saturday and Sunday for several weeks. Beyond the Bar is set in Korea's legal word, and it's about a young rookie lawyer who starts to work for a big law firm. He finds his strong sense of justice challenged by the intricacies and moral gray areas of the work he has to do. Premieres on Saturday, August 2 SEC Football: Any Given Saturday Netflix subscribers are no stranger to sports documentary series, with a new one landing every other week, and this time around there's SEC Football: Any Given Saturday which releases on Tuesday, August 5. This series follows college footballers in the South Eastern Conference (hence, SEC) over the course of their 2024 season. You'll get to see players on the pitch and relaxing between games behind-the-scenes, to see what it's like being a college football player. Releases on Tuesday, August 5 Wednesday season 2 The smash-hit TV show returns when Wednesday season 2 releases; the first four episodes release on Thursday, August 6 and the last four on Thursday, September 3. This Addams Family prequel follows young Wednesday Addams as she attends the Nevermore Academy and season 2 sees her attend another year of school. She also has to solve a mystery along the way. A long list of new faces join her along the way, with many recognizable celebrity actors joining the cast. Part 1 releases on Wednesday, August 6 Stolen: Heist of the Century The second Netflix documentary this year about a jewel theft, Stolen: Heist of the Century is a doc movie about a well-known noughties crime that releases on Friday, August 8. Stolen: Heist of the Century looks at a 2003 robbery in Antwerp which saw hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of diamonds stolen in a surprisingly capable heist. No-one's ever been sure how the crime was actually committed but according to Netflix, that's finally going to change with the movie revealing it for the first time. As you can imagine, not a single diamond was ever recovered from the heist. Releases on Friday, August 8 Solve the daily Crossword
