Gujarat tightens security across key locations; ups surveillance in coastal, border areas

Hans India07-05-2025
Gandhinagar: A high-security alert has been issued across several states with Gujarat also intensifying its preparedness measures after the Indian Armed Forces' pre-dawn airstrikes on Wednesday on nine terror hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir under "Operation Sindoor", an official said.
Security agencies in coastal and border areas, particularly in Jamnagar, have launched extensive checking and surveillance operations. The Special Operations Group (SOG), Marine Police, and Task Force commandos have been deployed for patrols along sensitive coastal zones, including Halar beach -- known for its proximity to the Pakistan border.
Meanwhile, in line with the directives issued by the Central government, a large-scale Civil Defence mock drill was conducted across Gujarat.
Chief Secretary of Gujarat, Pankaj Joshi, oversaw the exercise through a virtual monitoring session held at the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar.
The mock drill aimed to assess the preparedness of various districts in responding to potential emergency situations and to enhance inter-agency coordination.
During the virtual review, senior officials including Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue Department Dr. Jayanti Ravi, Director General of Civil Defence Manoj Agarwal, Transport Commissioner Anupam Anand, and Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey were present.
The statewide drill included simulated scenarios to test the effectiveness of disaster response mechanisms, communication networks, and civil protection infrastructure.
Authorities emphasised the importance of such exercises to ensure Gujarat remains ready to handle crises with efficiency and speed.
In response to the heightened alert, all flights to and from key cities including Jamnagar, Bhuj, Rajkot, Jodhpur, and Amritsar, have been suspended.
Jamnagar Airport has implemented strict security checks under the supervision of district police, with teams inspecting vehicles and questioning drivers. Flights between Jamnagar and Mumbai will remain suspended for the next three days.
Amid these developments, Amit Arora, Joint Administrative Manager of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam and CEO of the Statue of Unity, chaired a review meeting to assess the readiness of the security system at the Narmada Dam.
He directed officials to ensure uninterrupted power and communication lines, while keeping backup systems ready to face any emergencies.
The State Reserve Force stationed in Ekta Nagar continues its 24x7 surveillance of the dam and surrounding areas.
Mock drills are also being conducted across the state to prepare for emergency scenarios.
In Jamnagar, the Fire Department is leading coordinated drills across four city zones, involving over 100 personnel and 30 fire engines.
Chief Fire Officer K.K. Bishnoi held a detailed pre-briefing for station officers, ensuring readiness for any disaster resulting from escalated tensions.
The Jamnagar district police, led by SP Premsukh Delu, also held a comprehensive review with top law enforcement officials, focusing on maintaining law and order and coordination among various departments.
Meanwhile, the state government, in coordination with central agencies, has reinforced surveillance and readiness measures to prevent any potential threats.
Key urban centers, including Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, and Vadodara, are under increased watch, with additional deployment of police forces and paramilitary units in sensitive zones.
High-traffic public spaces like railway stations, airports, religious sites, and major stadia -- including the Narendra Modi Stadium -- are being patrolled regularly while and security checks have been intensified.

32-hr debate on Operation Sindoor kicks off from Monday

NEW DELHI: As the stand-off between Centre and the Opposition continued on the fifth day of the Monsoon session of Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday convened an all-party meeting where Opposition parties agreed to the agenda of taking up a special discussion on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor on Monday in Lok Sabha and the next day in Rajya Sabha, brightening the prospect of normalcy in both Houses. Briefing the media, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the decision to start a special discussion on the 'Terrorist attack in Pahalgam and in response to that Operation Sindoor carried out by the Indian Armed Forces' was agreed to at a meeting of leaders of different parties chaired by Speaker Om Birla. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar are expected to speak in the Lok Sabha amid indications that Prime Minister Modi may use the much-anticipated debate to turn up the heat on the Opposition, which looks to corner the government over alleged intelligence failures and US President Donald Trump's claims of mediating a 'ceasefire' between India and Pakistan.

Row over ‘link' between Shrikant Shinde, Jharkhand liquor scam accused

Mumbai: The arrest of Amit Salunkhe, whose manpower supply agency Sumeet Facilities is among three firms accused of embezzling ₹450 crore from the Jharkhand excise department, has stirred a row in political circles in Maharashtra. Shrikant Shinde (left) and Eknath Shinde (HT Photo) On Friday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged that the businessman has links with Shiv Sena MP and deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde's son Shrikant Shinde. Sumeet Facilities, which runs over 1,500 emergency ambulances in Maharashtra through the '108' number along with two other firms, had escalated the annual charge for the ambulance service by hundreds of crores and Salunkhe had, in return, donated money to Shinde's foundation, Raut alleged. 'Amit Salunkhe has close connections with Shrikant Shinde and his firm received the contract to operate '108' ambulances from the state public health department, which is with the Eknath Shinde camp,' said Raut. On March 15, 2024, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state government had issued an order approving the appointment of Sumeet Facilities as one of three firms for providing emergency ambulance services for 10 years at a yearly cost of ₹807.77 crore. On July 2, 2025, the government had issued another order, approving the monthly charge for June at ₹33.54 crore. The government also allocated 70% of the amount for immediate payment while the remaining 30% was to be paid during final settlement. 'The charge for ambulance services was escalated by hundreds of crores. In return, Salunkhe gave money to the Shrikant Shinde Medical Foundation,' alleged Raut. He said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) must probe all matters related to Salunkhe including the tender for providing emergency ambulance services in Maharashtra. NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar said the agreement for running emergency ambulances between the state government and Sumeet Facilities must be suspended. 'The government did not pay any attention to allegations about corruption in the ambulance service contract till Salunkhe was arrested (on Wednesday) by Jharkhand police,' said Pawar. The scam was worth at least ₹6,000-crore as ambulances worth ₹33 lakh were supplied for ₹86 lakh, he alleged. 'We have repeatedly raised our voice about this matter. Soon, we will expose who received how much money,' he said. Shiv Sena leader and industries minister Uday Samant said Shrikant Shinde had proved his ability by leading a delegation to several countries following Operation Sindoor. 'People of Maharashtra will not believe such baseless allegations by Sanjay Raut,' said Samant. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Deepesh Mhatre said the contract for solid waste management in 7-10 wards of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) was awarded to Sumeet Elko, also owned by Amit Salunkhe, owing to his connections with the Shinde family. 'KDMC will pay them ₹85 crore per annum and as the contract is for 10 years, they will earn ₹850 crore,' said Mhatre. When contacted, Shiv Sena spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre said Raut made baseless allegations on a daily basis without any proof. 'There is no need to respond to his baseless allegations every day,' said Mhatre. HT reached out to Shrikant Shinde for his comets but did not get a response.
