Depleted Braves acquire pitcher Carlos Carrasco from Yankees for cash considerations
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees traded veteran pitcher Carlos Carrasco to the depleted Atlanta Braves on Monday for cash considerations.
The Braves acquired Carrasco a day after losing Grant Holmes to right elbow inflammation on Sunday. Holmes was originally placed on the 15-day injured list but moved to the 60-day IL after Erick Fedde was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals.
With the news involving Holmes, all five of Atlanta's opening day rotation are on the 60-day injured list. Atlanta lost at Texas 8-1 Sunday, has dropped five in a row and is 12 games behind in the NL wild-card race.
Carrasco was 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA in eight games for the Yankees, who started him six times before designating him for assignment on May 6.
Carrasco was in spring training on a minor league deal and could have opted out but he was re-signed after posting a 1.69 ERA in five spring training outings, including four starts. After accepting his assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre, the 38-year-old right-hander was 4-2 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) and was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA in five July starts.
Originally acquired by the Cleveland Guardians from the Phillies for Cliff Lee in July 2009, Carrasco is 112-105 with a 4.18 ERA in 332 games (283) starts for Cleveland, the New York Mets and Yankees.
He led the American League in wins in 2017 when he was 18-6 with Cleveland and also was named the 2019 AL Comeback Player of the Year following a return from leukemia.
The Yankees made their third trade since Friday after acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Rockies and Amed Rosario from the Nationals.

Yankees tie it 3 times in late innings before finally beating Rays 5-4 in 11
NEW YORK — Ryan McMahon drove in the winning run in the 11th inning with a single to deep center field, and the New York Yankees edged the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Wednesday night in a back-and-forth finish. Trent Grisham hit a tying homer in the eighth, Anthony Volpe did the same in the ninth and Cody Bellinger evened the score again for the Yankees with an RBI triple in the 10th. Moments later, New York took advantage of a critical balk by reliever Kevin Kelly (0-3) to remain four games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. Grisham's leadoff homer in the eighth and Giancarlo Stanton's run-scoring single off Bryan Baker gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Josh Lowe put Tampa Bay back in front with a two-run homer off closer Devin Williams in the ninth, but Volpe went deep against Pete Fairbanks with one out in the bottom half. Jonathan Aranda hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly against Luke Weaver in the 10th to put the Rays ahead 4-3 — but Jasson Domínguez made a terrific leaping catch at the left-field wall to prevent additional damage on the play. Bellinger tied it with his triple to right-center off Edwin Uceta in the bottom half. Kelly's balk advanced runners to second and third with nobody out in the 11th, forcing the Rays to play their outfield shallow. McMahon, acquired last week from Colorado , hit a long fly to center that landed just shy of the warning track. Tim Hill (4-3) worked a scoreless inning for the win, aided by McMahon's leaping grab at third base to snag Lowe's leadoff line drive. Brandon Lowe doubled home a third-inning run for the Rays in his return from the injured list . Austin Wells loses track of the outs in 9th inning and costs the Yankees a late opportunity
NEW YORK (AP) — Perhaps nobody was happier the Yankees won Wednesday night than catcher Austin Wells, after his embarrassing mental lapse on the bases cost New York an opportunity in the ninth inning. 'I think I just was being an idiot," he said. Anthony Volpe hit a tying homer off Tampa Bay Rays closer Pete Fairbanks with one out in the ninth, then Wells singled and advanced to second base when Trent Grisham tried to bunt for a hit. Grisham was thrown out at first for the second out and credited with a sacrifice. Wells, however, thought the inning was over and wandered off the bag. He got tagged in a rundown for the third out, sending a back-and-forth game to extra innings as fans in the Yankee Stadium crowd of 45,355 groaned. 'He thought there were three outs," New York manager Aaron Boone said. "Obviously, can't happen. With the base coaches we say the right thing. We go through with the pitcher, their time to the plate and number (of) outs. What do you say? Can't happen.' Instead of having seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt at bat with the potential winning run on second base, the Yankees were resigned to keep slugging it out with Tampa Bay in extra innings.
