Tigers open it up in extras to hand Guardians tenth straight loss
It is the first time the Tigers have swept the Guardians in Cleveland since April 10-12, 2015.
Skubal struck out 10 while allowing only three hits and no runs. In his last four starts against division opponents, he has struck out 43, allowed eight hits and one walk, and no runs.
Chase Lee (4-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up only one hit and struck out one.
Steven Kwan had three hits and drove in two runs for the Guardians, who have lost their most consecutive games since dropping 11 straight from July 27-Aug. 7, 2012. It is also the first time they have been swept in three straight series since that same period.
Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the eighth when Kwan doubled to right field to score pinch-runner Daniel Schneemann from second base.
The Tigers tied the game in the ninth when Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase threw a wild pitch that allowed Zach McKinstry to score from third base.
Cleveland had a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the inning with Angel Martinez on third base, but Schneemann's line drive was caught by Javier Baez.
Sweeney gave the Tigers a 4-1 lead with his three-run homer that scored Baez and Parker Meadows. Matt Vierling later followed with a double that scored Gleyber Torres. Greene then broke an 0-for-22 hitless streak against Cleveland with his 22nd home run of the season to bring home Vierling.
Kwan's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th scored Schneemann for the Guardians' other run.
Guardians starter Gavin Williams struck out eight and allowed one hit and no runs over six innings. Cade Smith (2-3) opened the 10th inning and allowed six runs on five hits.

He also once sued the Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers over 'medical negligence' regarding the handling of an injured knee. A family statement read: '[Norman] passed away peacefully in his sleep... surrounded by his loving wife, daughters, grandson, and great grandchildren. 'A strong advocate for civil rights and dedicated to creating opportunities for all, Mr. Norman was a respected business executive and civic leader, known widely for his accomplishments both on and off the field. 'He leaves behind a legacy of selfless leadership, advocacy on behalf of underserved people, and a deep commitment to his community.'

Colt Keith's three hits lead Tigers to win over Rays
July 8 - Colt Keith had three extra-base hits, including a solo home run, and the host Detroit Tigers opened a week-long homestand with a 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night. Keith, who scored two runs, supplied two doubles as the American League-leading Tigers won their fourth straight. They were coming off a three-game road sweep of Cleveland. All-Star Javier Baez smashed a two-run homer while Zach McKinstry supplied a solo shot. Riley Greene added an RBI single. Winning pitcher Keider Montero (4-1), elevated from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, held the Rays to one run and four hits with four strikeouts in six innings. Tyler Holton, Brenan Hanifee and Will Vest each tossed an inning of scoreless relief. Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz (8-4) gave up three runs and seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings. Jonathan Aranda had an RBI single. The Rays have lost six of their last eight contests. The Tigers stranded two runners in the first but the right-handed Baz couldn't prevent damage in the next inning. Dillon Dingler led off with a double. After Baz struck out the next two hitters, Baez clubbed his 10th homer on an 0-2 offering, a hanging curveball. The Rays made it 2-1 in the third. Taylor Walls drew a one-out walk. He moved to second on a Danny Jansen single and scored on Aranda's single. On that play, right fielder McKinstry threw out Jansen at third. Chandler Simpson had a one-out double in the top of the fifth but the right-handed Montero retired the next two batters. Keith smacked his second double of the game leading off the bottom of the inning. Baz struck out the next two batters, but Greene brought in Keith with a bloop single. Keith greeted reliever Paul Gervase in the seventh by ripping a fastball over the right field wall for his seventh homer. Two-time Stanley Cup winner Tyler Johnson announces retirement
July 8 - Tyler Johnson, who played 13 seasons in the NHL and won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Tampa Bay Lightning, announced his retirement on Monday. Johnson most recently suited up for the Boston Bruins, but the forward played only nine games in his lone season with them and contributed two assists. In 747 games with the Lightning (2012-21), Chicago Blackhawks (2021-24) and Bruins, Johnson racked up 433 points, tallying 193 goals and 240 assists. He burst onto the scene in 2013-14, his first full year in the league, when he totaled 50 points (24 goals, 26 assists) and was named to the NHL All-Rookie team. When the Lightning made a deep playoff run in 2014-15, Johnson led all NHL players with 13 goals and 23 points that postseason. He suffered a broken wrist during the Stanley Cup Final, which Tampa Bay lost to Chicago. Johnson provided some key scoring depth for the Lightning in the 2020 and 2021 playoffs.
