Sandro Tonali Says Newcastle United's Focus Is All On Champions League
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has challenged the club to secure Champions League football this season after its Carabao Cup win.
The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 at Wembley before Tonali scored the winner in a victory by the same score in their Premier League return against Brentford on Wednesday.
Ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy already secured legendary status for this team, but Tonali insisted the focus must now shift to qualifying for Europe's biggest competition after playing in it last season.
'I'm happy for the trophy, but it was [two weeks ago],' Tonalu said.
"We need to think about the Champions League, we need to think about winning every game.
"Everybody is happy for this season, every game we push and I'm happy to play for Newcastle.
'We have two months to get back into the Champions League. All the people here deserve it.'
Tonali made his Champions League home debut for Newcastle in its 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023, after moving from AC Milan for $71m the previous summer.
He wants memories of that game to inspire the team in its last nine games, starting at Leicester City on Monday.
"It is the best tournament in Europe; last season, against Paris Saint-Germain [a match Newcastle won 4-1], the stadium was magic. This team deserves it again but we need to push every week.
'Every player wants to play in the Champions League; we can do everything with this team of fantastic players.'

Tonali has become a key player in Newcastle's midfield this season, after a 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules ended in August.
The 24-year-old paid tribute to his team-mates and supporters and wants to repay them.
'It was a difficult season and I'm happy to come back, I've come back free and as a new player. I'm happy to help the team and the players and fans, they are amazing,' Tonali added."
Tonali also said he enjoys playing in midfield with Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes and hailed top scorer Alexander Isak as 'one of the best strikers in the world.'
"I am excited to play with Bruno and Joe because we play for the team before ourselves. This is the first thing, it is important. Joe is so strong, Bruno is so intelligent.
'In football, if you're striker is happy, the team is happy. Alex is happy every week; he scores every week and he is one of the best in the world. I'm happy to play with Alex.'

Pascal Struijk: It was a tough session today
Leeds United's first-team squad are on a pre-season training camp in Germany and from the base, LUTV caught up with Pascal Struijk. The defender played 45 minutes against Manchester United at the weekend in a first run-out for the side since their return to training, and he is now looking forward to more work. 'It was a tough session today,' Pascal started, summing up day one. 'We did some top-up running, so I am a little bit leggy, but I mean, that is what pre-season is for! We work hard so that we are ready to go when the time is right.' There's some fresh faces in the team and now one of the more experienced players, who has played in the Premier League before, Struijk was asked about his new teammates. 'I'm going to say the group is really nice. Already from last year and then for new guys to join in, I think it's a pretty easy group to come in. Everybody is very welcoming and the guys as well, they are really good guys. 'I just try to treat everyone really the same. But of course, when they come over for the first time, I will try to give them a helping hand, tell them about Leeds and the city as well.' Finally, the challenge is clear for the team to get ready ahead of a big kick-off against Everton at Elland Road in August. 'I'm really excited to play again in the Premier League. I think for a lot of people, it is a childhood dream to play there. So for me, again, to play will be a big joy. 'I think the best thing we can do is go in there without any fear. You know, you see last year, it is not going to be easy. 'But I mean, with some of the experience that some of the lads have, then we can hopefully bring that onto the team.'

Anton Stach: I want to feel the atmosphere
Leeds United confirmed a sixth summer arrival for Daniel Farke's side, announcing German international Anton Stach on a four-year contract. The towering midfielder brings more top-level experience to the Whites after playing in the Bundesliga for the last five years, as well as featuring in the Europa League and at international level in that time. Giving his first thoughts after signing, Stach told of his desire to play in the Premier League. 'First of all, I am feeling really good. I am excited to join such a good team, such a good Premier League team, and I am looking forward to the next season. 'My style of play, I would say I am an aggressive player. I am good in duels. I am good at anticipating passes from the opponents and it would be good for the Premier League. Now we will see, I will try my best! 'The biggest target is to stay in the league and personally just develop, adapt to the league, to the speed of course and then get many good experiences hopefully. 'I am really excited to play at home with the fans because I think the fans are really good here and as well away. 'I want to feel the atmosphere because I heard and I saw so many videos of the fans, the promotion [parade] last year over 150,000 people in the city. 'I think that is awesome. That is crazy when the team has a connection to the city. And I think then when you have fans like this, the fans get you some points as well in the league.'
