🚨 WARNING: First of all, proceed at your own risk — because this list discusses graphic and disturbing scenes that may not be suitable for everyone. This post also contains spoilers for The White Lotus, among other shows and movies! You've been warned!
The entire internet has been talking about The White Lotus lately — most recently, because of that shocking weirdo brother storyline (you know the one) that made its way into the plot.
So naturally, my coworkers and I began talking about how disturbing it was — and we quickly realized that there are quite a few similar storylines in other TV shows and movies. Because as much as the scene in The White Lotus was shocking, it's certainly not the first (and won't be the last) to depict this hard-to-watch behaviour on screen.
So here are a few shocking and surprising portrayals that you've probably forgotten about:
I literally cannot believe I'm writing this, but here we are.

Let's chat about all things House of the Dragon
See our House of the Dragon Discussions
1. Of course, we gotta start with The White Lotus. Basically, ever since the beginning of Season 3 — which premiered Feb. 16, 2025 — the vibe has felt way too close between Saxon and Lochlan, who are brothers in the show. And a kiss between the two of them in Episode 5 confirmed fans' suspicious (as well as, uh, even more in Episode 6).
2. I literally couldn't get through the first episode of Game of Thrones (sorry, Dad). I had trouble for multiple reasons, but one of them was just how close the siblings were. There's full-blown affairs and marriages between siblings throughout the show, because it's set around 298 A.C."Keeping the bloodline pure" and all that. Still, that definitely deters me from trying the show again, and it's caused chaos online about whether it's OK to root for these couples.
3. And in the same vein, how can I not mention House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spinoff show? The Targaryens, a GOT house, are no stranger to sibling relationships as it is — but one particular scene in Season 2 left fans disturbed over the edge. Some even said the show "crossed every limit" by including the scene.
4. Now, time for a bit of a lighter one: Clueless. I know what you're thinking: Abby, that doesn't count. But something about Cher dating Josh, her ex-step-brother, feels GROSS. Sure, they're not siblings anymore, but they were once technically related. No thanks. Cher is a character known for her high standards, but I guess she just lets them go entirely when she chooses to date someone she was once related to.
I'm kinda dying to know your opinion on this one, though, so please tell me your thoughts in the comments.
5. Gossip Girl had a pretty incestuous plotline. Again, it wasn't full-on like GOT (thankfully), but it was something. Essentially, Serena and Dan — who date each other in the show — become step-siblings, since Serena's mom Lily and Dan's dad Rufus get married. At the wedding, Serena and Dan also find out that share a sibling. While Lily and Dan get divorced, Serena and Dan still do end up together at the end.
6. Perhaps the king of awko-taco sibling reveals is none other than Star Wars. In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke and Leia kiss, before finding out that they're actually brother and sister. Like, BLOOD siblings. Yikes.
Is it just me, or do people kind of gloss over this part of the story? Because the second-hand embarrassment is just too much for me.
7. Rick and Morty had so much incest in it at one point that fans literally started complaining. Morty and his sister Summer are one example, and you may remember when Beth and her clone — yes, her clone — hook up (whether that qualifies is up to your discretion). There's also an episode about Jerry getting a fortune that says he's gonna have sex with his mom.
8. Spanish romance movie Culpa Mia, translated as My Fault, is one of those movies that may cross a few lines. In the movie, the two romantic leads, Nick and Noah, are step-siblings. So it's a "forbidden romance" of sorts. I'm not sure if it's intended to be cute or not, but to me, it was just a whole lot of UNCOMFY.
9. This one is definitely on the higher end of the scale, so prepare to be disturbed if you ever watch either of the Flowers in the Attic movies. In the story, not only are siblings full-on romantic with one another, but there are characters who are products of incest in this movie (yes, I'm serious). So I guess you could say Flowers in the Attic isn't for those of us who have weak tummies.
10. Speaking of characters that are related and have a child together, we also have that in How To Get Away With Murder. This show is probably one of the wildest ones out there, and there is more than one stomach-turning storyline. But perhaps the most memorable is between Sam and Hannah, who are siblings (and are later revealed to have a child).

11. Not many people would think to add Back to the Future to this list — but that's one of the first movies that comes to my mind. As we all know, in the first movie, Marty goes back in time, and his mom falls in love with him (without realizing that, you know, THAT'S HER SON). It's gross and weird — but I do still love this movie despite that uncomfy bit.
12. More recently, in 2024, the first season of Cruel Intentions shocked us all. Since the series was based on the movie from 1999, we figured we'd get the same level of disturbing. But the romantic relationship between Caroline and Lucien, the step-siblings at the centre of the movie, felt more uncomfortable in the newer version. This was one of the shows that really started the whole conversation about why the heck incest has been all over TV recently.
13. In Sons of Anarchy, we get another instance of siblings who get too close before even knowing they're related. This time it's between half-siblings Jax and Trinity, and the storyline plays out in Season 3 of the show. The pair finds out they're related before it REALLY gets out of hand, but there are still many scenes that made us all cringe.
14. Another one you may have forgotten about — but still lives rent-free in my head — is New Girl. In Season 6, Jess dates a guy named Robby. It seems innocent at the start, but then they learn they're actually third cousins. So thankfully, they stop dating, which is a huge relief.
15. And finally, Life with Derek. How could I forget this one as a Canadian? It's possibly the biggest conversation our country faced in the 2000s. I will clarify, this was a kids' show, so nothing actually happened, but step-siblings Casey and Derek were definitely crushing on each other. And we all noticed.
This show still slapped, though.

This true-to-life comedy is how I fight off the Sunday Scaries — and you can stream it on Max

Some Sunday night HBO shows ramp up the tension — we're thinking post-apocalyptic thrillers like "The Last of Us," power-struggle satires like "Succession" and dragon-filled dramas like "Game of Thrones." But where those HBO series get your adrenaline pumping and your anxiety swelling, there's one dramedy in the network's elite Sunday night club that instead brings a sense of calm and community to your binge-watching habits: "Somebody Somewhere." Led by a hilarious and heartfelt Bridget Everett, the superb HBO comedy-drama recently capped off its third and final season in December 2024, a tender and acclaimed run that saw each season receive a perfect 100% approval rating from critics (per Rotten Tomatoes). Along the way, "Somebody Somewhere" had viewers falling for Everett's Sam Miller and her family — both chosen and otherwise — of Joel (Jeff Hiller), Tricia (Mary Catherine Garrison) and Fred Rococo (Murray Hill). Even a half hour spent with this plucky crew out in Manhattan, Kansas, singing karaoke and joking around over French toast, will have you forgetting all about the morning meeting that's to come tomorrow. Here's why you should add "Somebody Somewhere" to your Sunday Scaries watch list. "Somebody Somewhere" centers on fortysomething Sam Miller (played by an Emmy-worthy Bridget Everett), "a true Kansan on the surface, but, beneath it all, struggling to fit the hometown mold," reads the official series logline, per HBO. As she returns to small-town Manhattan, KS, Sam grapples with loss and acceptance in the wake of the death of her sister, Holly. That is, until she finds solace in singing, which opens her up to "a community of outsiders who don't fit in but don't give us, showing that finding your people, and finding your voice, is possible. Anywhere. Somewhere.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Along with Everett, the Peabody Award-winning comedy stars Jeff Hiller, Mary Catherine Garrison, Tim Bagley, Murray Hill, Jennifer Mudge, Mercedes White, Meighan Gerachis and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson. Altogether, those lovable misfits explore life's beautiful and ugly moments with excess humor, refreshing honesty and plenty of hope. The HBO comedy — which recently nabbed two Emmy nominations for Jeff Hiller's sweet, soulful supporting role as Sam's BFF Joel as well as for Everett, Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen's writing — was widely praised by critics throughout its three-season run for its tenderness, grace and warmth. (It aired on HBO from January 2022 to December 2024.) "'Somebody Somewhere' captures the bittersweet beauty of life in all its minutiae, never forgetting to laugh in the face of adversity," reads the critical consensus for the show's sophomore season, per Rotten Tomatoes. Coleman Spilde of The Daily Beast called the gorgeous drama "one of the decade's finest, thanks to its delightful ensemble cast and a knack for fleshing out life's minutiae, with gravity and irreverence in equal measure." "Somebody Somewhere" isn't like any show, anywhere — it's an engrossing and exceedingly special watch that will both reaffirm your humanity and transport viewers to somewhere a little kinder, a little funnier and a little gentler than your everyday. It's just what you need when you have a busy, stressful Monday morning looming in your near future. Watch "Somebody Somewhere" on Max

Sydney Sweeney just sent this American stock soaring

A US clothing brand has seen its share price surge in a 'memestock' frenzy after announcing an advertising campaign featuring actress Sydney Sweeney. Clothing brand American Eagle Outfitters saw its stock jump as much as 12pc in New York after it announced that the Euphoria and The White Lotus actress would star in a new advertising push. The surge added nearly $228m (£168m) to its market value. Ms Sweeney will appear in a campaign for its winter denim collection that includes a limited-edition jacket as well as 'The Sydney Jean'. While advertising campaigns can and do influence a company's performance and Ms Sweeney is one of the most recognisable actresses in the US, analysts said the scale of the share price jump was untethered from reality. The sharp upswing comes after the retailer gained attention on Reddit's WallStreetBets, a forum known for fuelling so-called extreme rallies in the share prices of so-called memestocks. Memestocks are companies where the share price is driven by social media hype and online communities, rather than the company's fundamental financial performance. The phenomenon emerged during the pandemic as people turned to trading as a way to entertain themselves during lockdowns. 'Gamblification' of stock markets The term memestock was coined after companies including GameStop and Blackberry saw their share prices surge in 2021 despite little in the way of updates about their underlying performance. The vertiginous rally triggered the collapse of a hedge fund that had bet against GameStop's stock and helped inspire the 2023 film Dumb Money starring Paul Dano. American Eagle's stock was down almost 50pc so far this year prior to this week's rally after it pulled its annual forecasts because of tariff uncertainty. The company primarily sources its products from China. Ross Mayfield, an analyst at Baird Private Wealth Management, said memestocks were a symbol of how stock markets had been 'gamblified'. He said: 'It says to me nothing about the level of interest rates or financial conditions. This is retail traders moving individual stocks that are heavily shorted. 'It reflects more the gambling culture permeating financial markets. These are not being bid up because of a good earnings report. It's because of a Sydney Sweeney ad campaign.' Ms Sweeney, who has 25.2m followers on Instagram, has fronted campaigns for the likes of Ford, Baskin-Robbins ice cream and luxury fashion brand Miu Miu. As well as being known for her screen roles, Ms Sweeney has become a prominent figure in popular culture and found herself wrapped up in North American culture wars. After her appearance hosting Saturday Night Live, in which she appeared in a sketch as a Hooters waitress, Canadian newspaper the National Post that declared the actress's breasts were the 'double-D harbingers of the death of woke', a claim that sparked a wave of commentary on both sides of the political spectrum centring on her physical appearance. Meanwhile, Ms Sweeney was criticised by commentators on the Left in 2023 after she attended a birthday party for her mother where guests were pictured wearing Maga-style caps. 30 Years Later, Clueless Fashion Is 'Still Totally' Iconic: Revisiting The Looks With Its Costume Designer

For Clueless costume designer Mona May, there's a psychology to crafting a character's wardrobe. 'I think authenticity is one of the most important things when you design costumes, to make sure these characters feel real, and not just like talking Barbies,' she tells Refinery29. 'You want the audience to leave the theater and feel like, 'There was something about that character that felt like me.'' For a film as far-fetched as the 1995 classic, starring Alicia Silverstone as a spoiled Beverly Hills high school student, grounding the characters in reality was crucial. Yes, these affluent teenagers had access to runway fashion and daddy's credit card, but May also wanted to portray girls who loved the mall and were youthful and vibrant. While May — whose book The Fashion of Clueless is coming out in October — had no idea what a cultural phenomenon the movie, which celebrates 30 years this month, would become, she knew the costumes were crucial to the storytelling. From the introductory shot — which showed a montage of glitzy high schoolers poolside, cruising in high-end cars, and shopping in their finest threads — fashion was the focus. 'It was colorful, it was California, it was high-fashion, it was teenage fun. It had to immediately grab your eye,' she says. Pulling together thousands of costumes — 63 of them belonging to Cher (Silverstone) alone — on a $200k budget was no small task, according to May: '[We had to find] every headpiece, every backpack, every pair of sunglasses, every piece of jewelry seen. I don't even know how I did it, seriously, but we just went for it.' She emphasizes that the film was made in the mid-'90s, before social media made it easy to discover and access fashion. 'It was just the beginning of computers and cell phones, so my research was different. People behaved differently. There was a certain kind of innocence to the time as well,' she says. Because of that, May felt it was important to establish sartorial social cues (ie: graphic tees for the skaters, exposed slip and stockings with runs for a scattered teacher, etc.), as well bring attention to culturally relevant designer labels (the Calvin Klein slip dress that Cher's dad refers to as 'underwear,' and 'totally important designer' Alaïa dress) to the audience not privy to Melrose Avenue. Because the cast was fairly unknown at the time, there were no giant 'PR machines' sending boxes from fashion houses to dress the actors. Still, May enlisted luxury labels for looks such as Cher's iconic yellow plaid skirt set by Jean Paul Gaultier, along with pieces from Fred Segal and Anna Sui. She also pulled pieces from secondhand stores, army surplus shops, and then-popular mall brands: Body Glove, Roxy, BCBG, Gap, American Rag, Esprit, Vertigo, and Wet Seal (RIP). By combining designer names with mall mainstays, May says she was able to bring out the multifacetedness of each character. 'Dionne [played by Stacey Dash] is a really good example of that. She wears a lot of different things, from high-end Chanel to the leopard jacket that was thrifted and the vinyl skirt that was from a rave store on Melrose,' May explains. Cher also embodied the juxtaposition, sporting preppy co-ords as much as she did cap-sleeved dresses, while also dipping into the soft grunge looks popular at the time, like her layered black sheer top and chunky jewelry. 'She's not just one kind of girl. She's good-hearted, discerning, but can also be a bit of a mean girl, too.' May believes the style holds strongly three decades later because, in many ways, the cult classic was ahead of its time. The movie was nuanced in its portrayal of teenage girls, who were fashion-obsessed and naive, but also quick-witted and opinionated. There was a complexity to them — one May felt a responsibility to translate through their clothing. 'It was hard to make that movie,' she says. '[Director] Amy [Heckerling] said that many studios passed on it because they didn't want girls to talk like this. They wanted movies about boys. It was important to introduce young girls speaking that way: being smart, being self-assured, and knowing what they want. Smart girls deserved smart clothes.' May made sure that the outfits reflected each of the characters' personalities: Dionne's bold accessories and prints spoke to her spunky personality, Cher's meticulously coordinated shoes and outfits spoke to her perfectionism. Meanwhile, Tai (Brittany Murphy) had an evolving wardrobe — which went from baggy flannels and graphic tees at the beginning of the film to Cher-approved plaids and finally a happy grunge-meets-girly medium — that spoke to her journey of losing, rediscovering, and coming into herself. With so many characters to dress, the looks had to work together as well, like Cher and Dionne's coordinated school looks. On one hand, it brought to mind a familiar scenario of phoning your friend to plan outfits the night before school and, on the other, it symbolized that the two were counterparts. 'Throughout the film, I wanted to make sure that they were equally fashionable, equally important,' says May. Given that the film was set in Southern California, May felt it was important to also portray the many subcultures, from the posh upper echelon to skaters, stoners, and the business-casual kids who took themselves too seriously. Though they were all living in this platinum credit card world, Dionne's and Murray's style, for example, was culturally relevant for Black American teenagers at the time, with the Kangol hats, leopard print, and gold jewelry. May accomplished this authenticity by working with each actor to build the character's wardrobe together. Dash, for example, was slightly older, from New York, and had a strong sense of personal style, which played a huge role in constructing her character's look. In turn, according to May, 'Murray [Donald Faison's character] had to look really good too, because she would never date a slacker.' The same care was extended to Christian Stovitz (Justin Walker), the suave transfer student from Chicago, who we later find out is gay. May wanted the clothing to lead with his personality and interests — like fashion, which resulted in him wearing hats, a blue tuxedo, and slicked-back hair — and not be a reductive version of what a gay character might 'look' like (which wasn't a given at the time for the industry). The fashion in Clueless cemented May's signature style across all her works — which later included other cult classics like Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and Never Been Kissed — and gave the movie its staying power. It's the reason why not a single Halloween goes by without a Cher and Dionne recreation, why clothing collections in 1995 and thereafter exploded with Clueless -inspired threads, and why 30 years later, we are still celebrating the film that introduced Alaïa into many of our vocabularies. 'It's just incredible that this movie has lived in so many people's hearts. It's changed them and made them feel good. I'm so proud, I'll have a pink bow on my grave.'
