Federal government and Petawawa invest in active transportation Français

Cision Canada19-06-2025

PETAWAWA, ON, /CNW/ - A 1.4km asphalt multi-use pathway has been constructed along Laurentian Drive after a joint investment of $435,500 from the federal government and municipal governments.
This project boosts Petawawa's existing reputation as a bicycle-friendly community and makes active transportation available to individuals using mobility and accessibility devices. As a car-free way to get around, the pathway connects the community and visitors to recreational facilities, schools, neighbourhoods, and the commercial district. It also links to the Petawawa Terrace Provincial Park, and the four-season Algonquin Trail.
Quotes
"Investing in Petawawa's active transportation infrastructure is an investment in a liveable and affordable community. This pathway links residents to work, home and school and welcomes out of town cyclists to connect with Petawawa's amenities and local businesses."
The Honourable Gregor Robertson, Minister of Housing and Infrastructure and Minister responsible for Pacific Economic Development Canada
"The Town of Petawawa is excited to collaborate with the federal government through the Active Transportation Fund to enhance and expand its network of multi-use pathways. This initiative reflects Petawawa's strong commitment to promoting active transportation and reinforcing its role as a leader in fostering bicycle-friendly communities."
Gary Serviss, Mayor, Town of Petawawa
Quick Facts
The federal government has invested $96,000 in this project through the Active Transportation Fund (ATF), and the Town of Petawawa has contributed $339,500.
Active transportation refers to the movement of people or goods powered by human activity. It includes walking, cycling and the use of human-powered or hybrid mobility aids such as wheelchairs, scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and more.
The Active Transportation Fund was launched in 2021 to provide $400 million to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable.
The new Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF) will provide an average of $3 billion a year of permanent funding to respond to local transit needs by enhancing integrated planning, improving access to public transit and active transportation, and supporting the development of more affordable, sustainable, and inclusive communities.
The CPTF supports transit and active transportation investments in three streams: Metro Region Agreements, Baseline Funding, and Targeted Funding. Visit the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada website for more information.
Investing in active transportation infrastructure provides many tangible benefits, such as creating employment opportunities, strengthening the economy, promoting healthier lifestyles, ensuring equitable access to services and opportunities, cutting air and noise pollution, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The federal government has also launched an Active Transportation Online Hub. This webpage provides resources related to active transportation, such as data and research, policies, success stories on projects across Canada, and information on the federal government's active transportation investments.
