Former UFC champ Eddie Alvarez sees GOAT potential in Ilia Topuria after 'flawless' run
Alvarez (30-8 MMA, 4-3 UFC) knows what a top-tier fighter at his weight class looks like. The praise for newly crowned undefeated UFC champion Ilia Topuria has seemingly been endless since he knocked out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 this past month to make history, and Alvarez added to the parade.

"One thing about Topuria that he's excellent at is his positioning and his balance – it's like flawless," Alvarez told MMA Junkie. "They're not the same, but if you wanted to learn how to box you would watch Oscar De La Hoya back in the day, because he was so perfect. If you want to teach someone how to watch, it's like watch Oscar De La Hoya in his prime.
"Topuria has perfect weight distribution, keeps his head back and keeps a 60/40 split with weight distribution on his feet, stays tight and stays angled enough to where you don't have a target. It's really nice. If you want to break down fights or learn how to fight, watch a guy like that because he doesn't make a lot of mistakes."
Not only has Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) gone unbeaten in his rise to capturing belts in two UFC weight classes, but his past three fights have been the stuff of legends. He knocked out Alexander Volkanovski to capture the featherweight title, became the first to knock out Max Holloway in his first and only 145-pound defense before vacating, then came up a weight and halted future UFC Hall of Famer Oliveira inside three minutes to take 155-pound gold.
Winning against that caliber of opponent is difficult in itself, but doing it with the style Topuria is what truly grabs Alvarez's attention.

"How hard is it just to beat those three guys in a row?," Alvarez said. "Let's say he got three decisions against those guys. That would go down as, 'Damn, you beat three of the best guys in the world consecutively.' To put them away? To eliminate them? A flawless victory like that, each of them? Special.
"I feel like he still has a lot of life in him. I know he wants to be done by 30, but everyone wants to be done by 30. I think I said that, too. He's got another good five years in him. Arguably right now with this run, if he stays on the same path, we could be looking at an all-time great. We'll see how the next five go."
With multiple options on the table for Topuria's first title defense after UFC 317, Alvarez casted his vote for a matchup with Justin Gaethje over Paddy Pimblett or Arman Tsarukyan.
"Selfishly I want Justin," Alvarez said. "He's a fan-favorite of mine, just unbiased watching MMA, I want to see a Justin Gaethje fight before any other fight. Just because of the way he fights. This matchup for Justin, I'd want Justin to be a little bit more calculated and a little bit less reckless abandonment against a guy this dangerous."

Continued poor hitting has Braves fending off trade deadline questions after series loss to Angels
ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves don't want to hear they are running out of time to prove they can still compete for a playoff spot. Continued offensive woes are making a case Atlanta could be sellers instead of buyers at the trade deadline. Atlanta came within two outs of its second shutout loss in losing two of three games to the Los Angeles Angels. The Braves dodged what would have been their fourth shutout loss in their last seven games when Jurickson Profar hit a ninth-inning homer, but it was far too little to save the listless offense Thursday night in a 5-1 loss to the Angels. The Braves were shut out by the Angels 4-0 on Tuesday night in the series opener. The Braves (39-47) are fourth place in the NL East. Manager Brian Snitker hoped the return of Profar from an 80-game drug suspension would spark the struggling offense, and Profar hit homers in back-to-back games. That wasn't enough to save Atlanta from its first home series loss to the Angels since 2005. 'So hopefully that will be an added thing for us,' Snitker said of Profar's return as the starting left fielder and No. 5 hitter. 'If we get some guys going around him.' The Braves were limited to three hits, all singles, in seven innings by Angels right-hander José Soriano, who didn't allow a baserunner to reach second base. Matt Olson had one of the hits, a first-inning single to right field that extended his streak of reaching base safely to 33 games. While Olson has boosted his batting average from .234 on May 27 to .267, others continue to struggle. Michael Harris is hitting .215 and Ozzie Albies is at .224 after each was held without a hit. Those struggles add to speculation it may be time for the Braves to shake up the lineup at the trade deadline. 'Nobody wants to hear that,' Olson said. 'We're in here competing every day. We still have playoffs on our mind and I understand there's going to be some outside noise when you have a record like we do but we still feel like we've got a good unit in here. We're just not playing as well as we want to.' The Braves also are burdened by a depleted rotation. Bryce Elder (2-6) gave up four runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings for his third consecutive loss. The Braves trailed 3-0 after two innings. 'That's on me,' Elder said. 'It's tough to get the offense on a roll when you're always coming from behind.' Elder's poor outing came one day after right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach landed on the 15-day injured list with a fractured right elbow on Wednesday.
