Jurgen Klopp admits his true feelings on Arne Slot being successful at Liverpool
Arne Slot took on the daunting task of succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and quickly silenced any doubters, winning the Premier League title in his first campaign
Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he briefly wondered if he was actually happy watching Arne Slot take his Liverpool team and turn them into title winners. Slot, 46, has already lifted as many Premier League trophies in one season as Klopp did during his entire eight-and-a-half-year tenure, exceeding all expectations in his first 12 months at Anfield.
The Reds were far from title favourites coming into the campaign but Slot's side barely put a foot wrong in the top flight to win the league at a canter. Klopp left a squad packed full of talent and experience for the Dutchman to inherit, having arrived Feyenoord with the daunting task of succeeding one of the biggest names in world football at one of its most successful clubs.
There's still a long way to go for Slot to match Klopp's trophy haul and longevity, with the German considered one of the Reds' all-time greatest managers after leaving in May 2024. But there are already echoes of when Bob Paisley successfully took the reins from Bill Shankly, who built the foundations for Liverpool's golden era half a century ago.
But how did Klopp feel watching Slot get off to a lightning-fast start with a team who'd finished third the previous season?
"To be honest: when things started off so well under him, I briefly asked myself as a person whether I was happy that things were like this," the ex-Reds boss revealed to German newspaper Welt. "Yes, it's really good - it makes me happy."
Klopp enjoys a good relationship with those at Liverpool, recently returning for an LFC Foundation event. "We're in very good contact - with some of the players who write now and then or send the occasional photo from their holidays," the 54-year-old continued.
"The owners have become good friends. I've also written to Arne now and then; we've only seen each other once. He was pleased with my gesture back then."
"I was recently back in Liverpool in my role as ambassador for the LFC Foundation, and it was nice to see everyone again. But I'm glad I don't have to be there every day anymore. My time in Liverpool was wonderful, but it's over. A colourful bouquet of memories - and 99 percent of them are good."

Klopp now works as Red Bull 's head of global football, overseeing the development of players and coaches at their stable of clubs. The German doesn't miss being on the touchline, affirming: "Red Bull didn't bring me in as a potential coach.
"I'm supposed to pass on the experience I've gained as a head coach and manager, and I'm supposed to help younger colleagues develop.
"We want to hire coaches for the right reasons and, if necessary, part ways with them for the right reasons. And for me, it's all about sporting development and not how it's perceived by the public.

Manchester United are still thrashing out a deal with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo and hope to have him involved on their pre-season tour, a move which delight two potential future team-mates Two Manchester United players have given their seal of approval to the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, as the Red Devils continue to thrash out a deal with Brentford. United have already had two bids rejected for Mbeumo, the most recent of which totalled £62.5million. Ruben Amorim's side were prepared to pay Brentford a guaranteed £55m plus £7.5m in potential add-ons for the winger, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. United side had already seen an offer of £45m plus up to £10m in add-ons turned down earlier this month. It's been reported that Brentford would want at least £62.5m up front before approving his sale. That's the same fee amount which United paid to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves at the start of window, triggering his release clause. Mbeumo, 25, also has interest from Tottenham but he only wants to join United. The Red Devils are hopeful that a deal can be agreed in time for the Cameroon international to link up with Amorim's squad at the beginning of pre-season. United will embark on a tour of the USA this summer and want Mbeumo to be involved so that he can acclimatise himself to his new team-mates. Two members of the Red Devils' dressing room will seemingly be more than happy to welcome him. On Instagram, both Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee liked a post from journliast Fabrizio Romano which said that United will continue talks over signing Mbeumo. Cunha and Zirkzee could be the men playing alongside the 25-year-old in Amorim's front three next season. But there's still a way to go yet, with Mbeumo still firmly a Brentford player and due back there for pre-season training. The French-born star has 12 months left on his contract, although the Bees can exercise an option to extend it by a further year. Mbeumo's prolific form last term piqued the interest of Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham but his heart is set on a move to Old Trafford. Tottenham recently appointed Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new manager and it was hoped that his connection to Mbeumo would help persuade him to snub United. Ironically, Frank talked up Mbeumo's price tag at the end of the season. Before joining Tottenham, he was quoted as telling Tipsbladet: "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Mucho. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done. "There is a reason why he costs X number of million pounds, and we do not have X number of million pounds to buy for. I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don't look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer. "How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. Harvey Elliott had X-rated reaction to Germany star after England U21s Euros win
England beat Germany 3-2 after extra-time to win their second successive under-21 European Championship final and Harvey Elliott rubbed salt in their opponents' wounds Liverpool star Harvey Elliott appeared to stick two fingers up to Germany after helping England under-21s beat their old rivals to win another European Championship final. Elliott, 22, broke the deadlock after just five minutes before Ipswich's Omari Hutchinson doubled the Young Lions' lead in the first half. Germany pulled a goal back just before half-time, though, and eventually equalised on the hour mark, sending the final in Bratislava to extra-time. Lee Carsley's side quickly won back the momentum, as substitute Jonathan Rowe scored within the opeing two minutes. His goal was enough to crown England champions for the second time in three years, having also won the competition under Carsley in 2023. As the Young Lions celebrated after full-time while shaking hands with the Germany players, TV cameras zoomed in on Elliott and caught him cupping his ears and sticking two fingers up, seemingly directed at an unspecified opponent. The Liverpool midfielder had been taken off at the start of extra-time, as Arsenal wonderkid Ethan Nwaneri came on. In the 2023 final, Elliott came off the bench to help see out a victory over Spain, who England this year beat in the quarter-finals 3-1. His displays in Slovakia earned him player of the tournament, having scored a brace in the Young Lions' 2-1 semi-final win against the Netherlands on Wednesday. "Player of the tournament!" Elliott posted on Instagram. "Thank you to the team for making it happen. An absolute privilege." Elliott also told Channel 4: "It's another incredible moment. I think this one meant a lot more, especially coming off the back of winning it last time. "There's been a big expectation, big pressure but the way the lads handled it from start to finish at this tournament, I think no one deserves it more than us. "It's time to celebrate because it's been hard work; tiring with the heat, with everything that's involved. But it's party time now and we're gonna make the most of it. "It's getting me emotional. The team is one of a kind. To work with these lads each and every day for the last month or so, it's been one of the best moments of my career so far. All the lads are just top, top guys and it might be the last time I'm ever gonna play with some of them. "As you know, we're moving on now, we're too old for the competition. It's been incredible and I wish them nothing by the very best. I hope they go on to succeed at everything in life because the way they are as lads, the way they are as players, to all get to this moment and to play so well again, it's emotional but I'm so thankful for them."
