Verizon wins private 5G contract for UK's Thames Freeport
(Reuters) -Verizon Business has won a contract to build multiple private 5G networks at Thames Freeport, one of Britain's busiest shipping and logistics centers, the U.S. telecom giant said on Wednesday.
The deal, in partnership with Finland's Nokia, will see Verizon deploy private 5G networks across multiple industrial sites along the River Thames Estuary, including major ports and Ford's largest London manufacturing facility.
Private 5G networks provide dedicated connectivity that avoids the congestion and speed variations of public networks shared by multiple users, enabling advanced industrial applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI).
5G adoption in European ports is still at an early stage. The technology allows ports to handle larger volumes of data needed to run or track cargoes, cranes, drones and industrial sensors.
The companies did not disclose financial details of the agreement, only describing it as supporting a "multibillion-dollar operational transformation" of the region.
Thames Freeport is a 34 km-wide economic corridor established in 2021 as a designated UK "Free Trade Zone", offering a range of tax incentives and reliefs to businesses as part of efforts to revive the Thames Estuary region.
Verizon has been working with Nokia to develop private networks for manufacturing and logistics companies in international markets where it lacks its own public network infrastructure.
Nokia will serve as the sole hardware and software provider.
The networks will serve DP World London Gateway and DP World Logistics Park - Britain's largest deep-sea container port handling over 3 million units annually -, the Port of Tilbury and Ford's Dagenham plant.
Use cases will include AI-driven data analytics, predictive maintenance, process automation, autonomous vehicle control, safety monitoring and real-time logistics orchestration, Verizon said.

Gold retreats from five-week high as investors book profits
BENGALURU: Gold eased on Tuesday as investors booked profits after prices scaled a five-week high, while market participants focused on trade talks ahead of US President Donald Trump's Aug 1 deadline. Spot gold fell 0.3 per cent to US$3,386.25 per ounce by 0808 GMT. Earlier in the session, bullion hit its highest since June 17. US gold futures were down 0.2 per cent at US$3,398.40. Gold prices edged lower amid profit-taking but remained close to the five-week high due to lingering uncertainty ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline, said Jigar Trivedi, a senior commodity analyst at Reliance Securities. "Gold is likely to stay bullish. A strong resistance is seen near US$3,420. On the flip side, US$3,350 is a support," he said. The US dollar index edged up 0.1 per cent against its rivals. A stronger dollar makes greenback-priced gold more expensive for other currency holders. European Union diplomats said the bloc is exploring broader counter-measures against the United States as prospects for a trade agreement with Washington diminish. Trump has threatened 30 per cent tariffs on European imports if no deal is reached before the Aug 1 deadline. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration prioritises the quality of trade deals over timing. Focus is also on the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting scheduled for next week, where the central bank is expected to hold interest rates steady for now and potentially begin cuts in October. Gold tends to perform well in a low-interest-rate environment and during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. Spot silver fell 0.3 per cent to US$38.81 per ounce, platinum was steady at US$1,437.65 and palladium declined 0.2 per cent to US$1,261.93. Russia's Nornickel, the leading global producer of palladium, lowered its palladium output forecast, now expecting between 2.68 million and 2.73 million ounces compared with the earlier estimate of 2.70 million to 2.76 million ounces.

Argentina loosens visa requirement for Chinese citizens
Argentina said on Monday that Chinese citizens with valid U.S. entry visas would not need Argentine visas to enter the country for tourism or business, a loosening of requirements that comes amid warming ties between Beijing and Buenos Aires. Argentina is a key supplier of products including beef, soy and lithium to the Chinese market and cooperation has deepened between the two countries in recent years. The decision by President Javier Millei was made to boost tourism and 'deactivate' mechanisms which have 'impeded the free development of Argentina's economy, of which tourism is a strategic area,' according to a statement on the Argentine government's website. It comes after China in May extended its visa-free policy to citizens of Argentina as well as those of Brazil, Chile, Peru and Uruguay, putting some of Latin America's largest economies on equal footing with many European and Asian countries. In line with the exemption adopted by China, it is 'deemed appropriate to adopt equivalent measures for Chinese nationals holding ordinary passports who enter for tourism and business purposes,' the statement said. China is Argentina's second-largest trading partner after Brazil and a key investor in infrastructure, energy and mining projects in the country. China has also extended a multi-billion dollar swap line to Argentina, mollifying billions of dollars in repayments that the Latin American nation needs to pay in the coming months. Argentina is also part of China's Belt and Road Initiative, which it joined in 2022. - Reuters
