The original cast of Broadway's Hamilton returned to the Tonys stage for a special 10th anniversary performance, delivering a medley of the musical's most iconic songs. But some viewers felt the performance missed the mark. Here's why.
It was a reunion a decade in the making as the original company members of Hamilton performed a tribute to the musical that reinvigorated Broadway in 2015. Midway into the 78th annual awards show, the cast didn't throw away "their shot" as they gathered onstage at New York's Radio City Musical Hall for a performance that brought the audience to its feet.
Participating in this landmark performance were Carleigh Bettiol, Andrew Chappelle, Ariana DeBose, Alysha Deslorieux, Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Sydney James Harcourt, Neil Haskell, and Sasha Hutchings. Also appearing were Christopher Jackson, Thayne Jasperson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Stephanie Klemons, Morgan Marcell, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Javier Muñoz, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Phillipa Soo, Seth Stewart, Betsy Struxness, Ephraim Sykes and Voltaire Wade-Greene.
The original cast performed a medley of songs from the Broadway musical at the 2025 Tony Awards. They started with "Non-Stop" and "My Shot", then moved into "The Schuyler Sisters," "Guns and Ships," "You'll Be Back," "Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)," "The Room Where It Happens," and ended with "History Has Its Eyes on You."

However, some fans were highly critical of the blockbuster performance, taking to social media to share their thoughts. Here's what they had to say.
"Wishing it was longer but I absolutely loved it," wrote one Tonys viewer on Instagram. "I cried when it ended because it wasn't enough!. Need more!!" penned a second fan. "Also, no actual singing from Jonathan Groff? Come on!" a third claimed.
Other fans noticed the omission of one key cast member from some of the tribute's most pivotal moments. "Nice arrangement, but I would have loved to hear/see Anthony Ramos too," a viewer said. Ramos played John Laurens in the original cast. Another fan agreed, writing, "So sad that Anthony didn't have a solo but it was an amazing performance."
Hamilton debuted off Broadway at the Public Theater in 2015, transferring to the Richard Rodgers Theatre that year. At the 70th annual Tony Awards, the musical made history with a record-breaking 16 nominations and 11 wins including Best Musical.
The musical went on to receive the Grammy Award, Olivier Award, Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors. Its Original Broadway Cast Recording became the first in history to be certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Why the Coconut Grove Playhouse project is a revival, not a demolition

A recent Op-Ed in the Miami Herald by Miami resident and theatergoer Barry J. White about the Coconut Grove Playhouse renovation reflects a heartfelt concern. The Playhouse, closed since 2006, is undergoing a long-awaited transformation, including the restoration of its historic front façade and the construction of a new 300-seat theater. White argues that the current renovation is effectively a demolition of the original 1,100-seat main theater, replaced with a venue 'with just 300 seats,' which he believes 'is economically nonviable for hosting Broadway touring companies, which require at least 1,000 seats.' I appreciate White's passion. As the producing artistic director of GableStage, which is entering its 27th season and is set to become the resident theater company at the renovated Playhouse, I'd like to offer some insight on what lies ahead. Most important, I want to emphasize that what we are building at the Playhouse is much more than just a building. The project now underway is not about demolition — it is about revival. It honors the history that White rightly values while looking toward a future defined by artistic excellence, civic participation and lasting community impact. As the future operator of the Playhouse, GableStage will perform in a fully equipped, state-of-the-art regional theater. The new venue will include an orchestra pit, fly loft, and wing space — essential infrastructure for producing ambitious, fully realized work. What is being built is not a scaled-down version of something greater. It is a purpose-built space designed for world-class artistry and long-term sustainability. The revitalized Playhouse will once again become a cultural gathering place for Coconut Grove and the broader Miami community. The impact of a theater is measured not only by what takes place on its stage, but by what it makes possible beyond its walls. The mission of a regional theater is to serve as a center for imagination — a place where community and artistry meet, where ideas are exchanged, and where stories reflect the people it serves. That is the role GableStage embraces fully. Currently, GableStage produces a five-play season in its 138-seat theater located at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The company has received 72 Carbonell Awards — South Florida's most prestigious theater honor — and more than 200 nominations. We are also proud recipients of the Ruth Forman Award for major advancements in the South Florida theater scene. Founded in 1979 as Florida Shakespeare Theatre, GableStage began by performing Shakespeare's plays in repertory at the outdoor Casino Gardens at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Our work has always been rooted in place, created with intention, and offered in direct dialogue with our audiences. At the Grove, our impact will deepen. Through a transformational partnership with Florida International University, we will collaborate with both students and faculty across disciplines to build new bridges between education, the arts and civic life. Our work has never been confined to the stage. A theater company is a citizen of its community. Whether through public programs, partnerships with local organizations, or expanded outreach to underserved schools, GableStage will continue to grow the work we already do across Miami. Theater, at its best, is a civic necessity. It teaches us to listen, to empathize, to imagine. GableStage exists to inspire optimism and creative problem-solving in response to the challenges we face as a society. We will continue to play a vital role in Miami's vibrant professional theater ecosystem— one we are proud to be part of and proud to help strengthen. Our move to Coconut Grove is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in something enduring. We are not simply restoring a building; we are writing a new chapter in Miami's cultural story while honoring the legacy of the original Playhouse. We are honored to do so — and we invite Barry White and others in the community to join us. Bari Newport is the producing artistic director of GableStage, set to become the resident theater company at the renovated Coconut Grove Playhouse.

Cynthia Erivo's Fave Vocal Performances Include A Shocking Pick: Sisqó's 'Thong Song' [List]

Known for her powerhouse pipes and commanding stage presence, Cynthia Erivo has long been celebrated as one of this generation's most gifted vocalists. When Entertainment Weekly (EW) asked the Tony, Emmy, and Grammy winner to name her top seven vocal performances of all time, her list included an unexpected — yet hilarious, heartfelt and relatable— nod to early 2000s R&B. Check out her list inside. Erivo sat down with EW to share her favorite vocal performances, and we were pleased to find Sisqó's 'Thong Song' amongst the top seven. 'I'm going to get in trouble for this one,' Erivo joked in the video interview, before defending the flamboyant, falsetto-filled track. 'Why do you need to sing like this when singing about a thong? That key change? The commitment? It is a good vocal.' Her choices spanned genres and generations, reflecting her love for storytelling through song, dynamic vocal technique, and unfiltered emotion. From gospel-rooted legends to pop titans and Broadway icons, Erivo's list offers a masterclass in vocal expression — with a little levity along the way. 'At that age, with that kind of power? Unbelievable,' she marveled. 5. Amazon is shutting down Freevee this summer — but you can still stream for free on Prime Video

Amazon's free, ad-supported streaming service, Freevee, is officially coming to an end, and the shutdown date is fast approaching. After offering users access to thousands of movies and TV shows without a subscription, the Freevee app will be discontinued in August 2025. Earlier this summer, an in‑app notice began appearing for users, stating: 'Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live TV. The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025. Continue watching your favorite free originals and our library of hit movies, shows, and live TV on Prime Video for free, no subscription needed.' This move marks a major shift in Amazon's streaming strategy, as the company begins to consolidate its offerings under the Prime Video umbrella. Amazon announced it was shutting down Freevee back in November 2024, citing a plan to streamline the viewing experience and bring all of its content into one unified app. In fact, Prime Video already offers a growing selection of ad-supported content available for free without a membership, and that free tier will continue even after Freevee is gone. So while one of the best free streaming services is going away, most of its content isn't. Amazon plans to migrate the majority of its Freevee programming directly into Prime Video, meaning viewers will still be able to enjoy free movies and TV shows, just from a new home. So, here's everything you need to know about Freevee's departure and how to access the same content after the shutdown. Amazon is shutting down Freevee as part of a strategic shift to simplify its streaming offerings. The company aims to create a more streamlined viewing experience by consolidating its free and paid content into one platform: Prime Video. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. An Amazon rep told Variety: 'We have built Prime Video into a first-stop entertainment destination where customers can personalize their viewing experience by streaming exclusive Prime member entertainment produced by Amazon MGM Studios, licensed movies and series, content from other services as an add-on subscription, live sports, blockbuster movies and series to rent or buy, FAST [free, ad-supported streaming TV] channels and the complete Amazon Freevee content offering.' They also added: 'To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding. There will be no change to the content available for Prime members, and a vast offering of free streaming content will still be accessible for non-Prime members, including select originals from Amazon MGM Studios, a variety of licensed movies and series, and a broad library of FAST channels — all available on Prime Video.' Another important reason for shutting down Freevee is to reduce brand confusion and redundancy. Since there was significant overlap between the content available on Freevee and Prime Video, maintaining two separate brands became unnecessary and potentially confusing for users. But, most importantly (and what the majority of users will be concerned about), free content will remain available to both Prime members and non-Prime users through Prime Video. Prime Video offers a variety of free content that anyone can watch, even without a Prime membership. To find this content, you can start by browsing the "watch for free" or 'free with ads' section on the Prime Video website or app. This area features a curated selection of ad-supported titles that you can stream at no cost. You can browse through the available movies and shows in this section, and when you select a title, it will play with occasional ads, similar to other free streaming services. No subscription or payment is required to enjoy these titles. By using the Prime Video app's free content section, you can keep enjoying a variety of entertainment without signing up or paying, especially important now that Amazon is moving Freevee's offerings into Prime Video.
