Coaches defaced, Kolkata Metro launches manhunt
On Wednesday, a video of CCTV footage went viral in which a man, clad in a blue t-shirt and jeans, is seen defacing the closed doors of a compartment of a running Metro train.
Recently, the doors of a Metro coach was defaced with black spray paint.
'As the pride of Kolkata, the Metro's image has been tarnished by this act, deeply hurting the sentiments of its users and admirers,' the Metro said in an official statement.
'We urge everyone to refrain from such damaging activities within Metro premises. With extensive CCTV surveillance installed in both rakes and stations, identifying offenders is straightforward, and legal action will be swiftly taken against anyone caught engaging in such misdeeds,' it added.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police sources said the Metro Railway authorities have approached the force to help them identify the offender.

Detention of Bangla-speaking migrants: Bhasha stir begins, Mamata to march in Birbhum today
As the Trinamool Congress on Sunday launched its Bhasha Andolan campaign over detention and deportation of Bangla-speaking migrants in several states of the country, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to lead a protest march in Birbhum town on Monday. The march will commence from the Tourist Lodge intersection and conclude at the Jambooni bus stand, followed by the chief minister's speech. On Sunday, she reiterated her charge against the BJP of unleashing a regime of 'linguistic terror' on Bengalis in the country, claiming that members of a migrant family were beaten up by the police in Delhi. Banerjee shared a video on X of a child and his mother purportedly belonging to a migrant family from West Bengal's Malda district, who were allegedly beaten up by the police in the national capital. Banerjee had last Monday accused the BJP of unleashing 'linguistic terrorism' on Bengalis, asserting that the fight for identity and language will continue until BJP is defeated. Speaking at the TMC's annual Martyrs' Day rally, she had announced that from Sunday, a movement would start in West Bengal to protest against 'attacks on Bengalis, the Bengali language and linguistic terrorism'. Marches were organised in Bhawanipore and Sealdah in Kolkata and elsewhere in Chuchura, Bankura, Birbhum, Cooch Behar by TMC workers, who held placards highlighting 'harassment and persecution' of the migrant workers in Assam, Odisha, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Maharashtra by the police in those states. TMC MLA Asim Majumdar led the rally at Khadina More in Chuchura, where he asserted that the 'double-engine governments' in those BJP-ruled states were 'deliberately harassing' Bengali-speaking migrants despite producing documents like Aadhaar cards and Voter ID cards. 'As stated by our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, we have started this 'language movement' from today, which will hit the streets every weekend till the middle of August in the run-up to Independence Day. We will not take the persecution of Bengalis lightly,' he asserted. TMC leader and North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha led another march at Dinhata in Cooch Behar, vowing to resist the 'attempt by the BJP to strike off names of legitimate voters from voter lists, and send Indian citizens from Bengal to detention camps for electoral gains'. Thousands of TMC activists took part in the rallies in Sealdah and Bhawanipore with placards displaying Bengali alphabets and slogans against 'torture on Bengali-speaking people by the BJP outside West Bengal'. The processions disrupted vehicular movement in parts of central and south Kolkata.

ED probes Anil's RHFL for writing off Rs 7k cr loans to group firms
NEW DELHI: As the ED sifts through voluminous documents and digital records seized from Anil Ambani 's Reliance group entities during searches, which began on July 24 and concluded on Sunday, the agency, in particular, is looking at alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore loans by Reliance Home Finance Ltd (RHFL) to various related entities. ED is being assisted in its task by National Financial Reporting Authority, CBI, Security and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) and National Housing Bank, since it involves misappropriation of huge public funds. At least a dozen related entities of the group are currently undergoing insolvency proceedings, which means massive haircuts for banks. Sources said 22 individuals, who are key management personnel and associates of Ambani, have come under the radar of the agency and are being investigated, besides the 60 companies that were covered during the searches lasting over 72 hours. A Sebi investigation report (shared with ED) has highlighted alleged laundering of funds by RHFL, which had written off around Rs 7,000 crore out of the Rs 12,000 crore of loans it had extended to various entities linked to the Anil Ambani group. A forensic audit, commissioned by the bank, has also concluded diversion of this amount to related companies. Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure, in identical statements, said, "The company and all its officials have fully cooperated and will continue to cooperate with the authority". On the alleged diversion of Rs 12,000 crore by RHFL to related entities, a company official said, "The account of RHFL has been fully resolved with change in management pursuant to the judgment of SC in 2023. ..Allegations of other irregularities are sub-judice and as a matter of fact, the Sebi order has been challenged before SAT (Securities Appellate Tribunal) since 2024". "Sebi vide its order dated Aug 22, 2024, has found that RHFL has engaged in a fraudulent scheme to divert funds for the benefit of Ambani and his group companies," a source aware of the probe said. ED is probing related party transactions, in which it was found that Reliance Infrastructure had received funds from Crest Logistics and Engineers Pvt Ltd, which in turn had received funds from at least four entities - RPL Star Power Pvt Ltd, RPL Solar Power Pvt Ltd, Species Trade and Commerce Pvt Ltd and Worldcom Solutions Ltd - all of them allegedly linked to the Anil Ambani group. According to the Sebi investigation report, the forensic audit of RHFL found that "loans of more than Rs 12,000 crore have been extended to various entities which are linked to the Anil Ambani group. These companies had a common registered address, email ID/domain, address and directors". The Sebi report further revealed that as on Sept 30, 2021, Rs 6,931 crore had been declared as NPA/written off by RHFL out of loans extended to linked/associated entities of the group.

Migrant worker's son and wife beaten by Delhi police; Mamata Banerjee posts video
Kolkata July 27 (UNI): A migrant worker's wife and young son, who had travelled from West Bengal to Delhi in search of work, were allegedly assaulted by the police. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee protested against the incident by posting a video on social media. Launching an attack against the BJP-led Central Government and the ruling party in Delhi, she wrote, "Even a child is not spared from linguistic terrorism." In the video shared by the Chief Minister, a young man is seen showing injury marks on his young son's body, saying, "Look what they have done to my son. The police beat him and injured his forehead." He is also heard alleging in the video that all their essential belongings were thrown away. The man's wife also appears in the video. The allegation is that Bengali-speaking workers, suspected of being Bangladeshis, are being detained in BJP-ruled states like Odisha, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh—even after showing documents like Aadhaar and voter ID cards. In such cases, only a 'Police Clearance Certificate' (PCC) seems to secure their release; otherwise, they are being detained. The harassment of Bengali migrant workers in Delhi and Odisha has already reached the Calcutta High Court. Against this backdrop, the ruling party in West Bengal, Trinamool, has launched a 'language movement' against the BJP starting Sunday.
