The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police probing the alleged rape of a law student on a college campus is confident of building an 'airtight' case after retrieving the cellphones of the four arrested accused and the CCTV footage of the '11th hour' — the hour preceding the crime. On Monday, the SIT sent the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) from the college's CCTV cameras for forensic examination, along with the seized mobile phones of the accused. A senior police officer told The Indian Express the student had told the investigators that the video of the crime was on key accused Monojit Mishra's phone. 'We have got the CCTV footage of the eleventh hour. The DVRs have been sent for forensic examination, and those who were there in the college on that day have been questioned,' the senior officer said. Police sources said the CCTV footage shows the woman being dragged from the college gate into the premises. 'A total of eight individuals, including the woman and the accused, were present on the campus on the evening of the alleged crime. Four have been arrested in connection with the case. The remaining three, who were in the students' union room but not implicated directly in the crime, have undergone questioning,' another officer said. Metro services disrupted in Kolkata amid heavy rain
Commuters in Kolkata faced significant disruptions to metro services this Monday, the first working day of the week, due to severe waterlogging caused by heavy rainfall. While some services are still operating, they are running at a crawling pace. Services between Mahatma Gandhi Road station and Park Street halted, with multiple metro trains stranded at various stations across the network. Metro authorities have issued assurances that the issues will be promptly resolved, but commuters are already feeling the pinch, with many attempting to exit metro stations to find alternative transportation like buses and cabs to reach their workplaces. The disruption has led to an increase in crowds at several stations, with the escalators at Maidan station reportedly closed due to overwhelming pressure from the throngs of passengers. This latest disruption follows a similar incident two days ago. On Saturday afternoon, North-South Metro services (Dakshineswar to Kabi Subhash) were interrupted for nearly an hour when the drainage channel between the tracks in the tunnel suddenly filled with water. The incident, which occurred between Jatin Das Park and Netaji Bhavan stations from 3:40 pm to 4:35 pm, was attributed to a burst water pipe. Metro sources explained that the concrete drainage channel situated between the two tracks, specifically between Jatin Das Park and Kalighat stations, became inundated. Officials highlighted the critical risk posed by a flooded drainage channel to the metro's electrified third rail, which could lead to significant damage and widespread disruption. Consequently, services were suspended on Saturday as per standard metro operating procedures. Metro workers and officials responded by disconnecting the power supply to the third line and commencing repair work. The situation was brought under control after approximately an hour of effort. Kolkata law college rape case: CCTV footage corroborates victim's account, SIT expanded to 9 members
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Kolkata law college rape case has been expanded from five to nine members to expedite the investigation, police officers confirmed Sunday. The move comes as investigators make significant progress, with collected CCTV footage reportedly corroborating the statement of the first-year student of the law college who was allegedly raped on June 25 in the security guard's room on the campus. Police sources revealed that more than seven and a half hours of CCTV footage from the college's external gate and premises have been collected and meticulously examined. 'Yes, the CCTV footage… also corroborates the victim's statement,' a senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express, specifically referring to the complainant's claim that she was prevented from leaving the college. So far, four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape: a contractual staffer and former student of the college, Monojit Mishra, 31; and two students, Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee, 20; and a security guard of the college, Pinaki Banerjee. All four arrested were visible in the CCTV footage obtained by the police from the day of the alleged rape, confirming their presence at the scene, as per the police. The SIT has already applied for the confidential statements of the survivor and her parents. Bidisha Kalita, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jadavpur Division, Kolkata, along with Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal, Assistant Commissioner of Police (South Suburbs), who leads the SIT, visited the crime scene on Sunday and began an examination. Investigators have compiled a list of all those who visited the college on June 25, based on CCTV footage and witness statements. All those on this list will be questioned, with some already summoned by the police. The survivor's parents are also expected to record their confidential statements before a magistrate. A crucial development in the investigation was the reconstruction of the crime scene on Saturday for over two hours in the presence of the survivor. US residents ‘targeted' by Kolkata-based ‘fraud call centre'; 5 arrested from Park Street
The Cyber Police Station of Kolkata Police on Thursday arrested five persons in connection with a 'fraudulent call centre' that allegedly targeted residents of the United States. The arrests were made following a raid at a premises on Park Street in the early hours of the day. Police said the accused were picked up between 2.15 am and 2.35 am from a first-floor room on Park Lane. The arrested have been identified as Ashutosh Ray (28) of Park Street, and Md Sarfaraz (22), Akeel Ahmed (22), Nawazish Hussain (23), and Md Rashed Hussain (22) — all residents of Bright Street in the Karaya area. According to police, the accused were running a fake call centre from the Park Lane address. 'They made Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) calls to residents in the United States, impersonating tech support and utility service providers such as PayPal, Norton, and McAfee. They then allegedly cheated victims by remotely accessing their computers and siphoning money,' said a police official. During the raid, police recovered several items, including 'leads' (lists of potential victims) and conversation scripts used in the fraudulent calls. Ray was allegedly identified as the owner of the call centre, while the others were 'working under him'. Police said more members of the group are absconding. Four laptops, five mobile phones, and two routers were seized along with 'incriminating documents', police said, claiming the devices contained evidence of dialers used for VoIP calls and remote access software. The accused will be produced in court on Thursday, with police seeking their custody for further investigation. A case has been registered under Sections 66, 66C, 66D, 84B, and 43 of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Sections 61(2), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 318(4) (cheating), 336(2) and 336(3) (forgery), 338 (forgery of valuable security), and 340(2) (using forged documents) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
