Japan's Nissan tests driverless vehicles in city streets filled with cars and people

Boston Globe10-03-2025
Waymo is going to land in Japan this year. Details haven't been disclosed, but it has a partnership with major cab company Nihon Kotsu, which will oversee and manage their all-electric Jaguar I-PACE sport-utility vehicles, first in the Tokyo area, still with a human cab driver riding along.

During Nissan's demonstration, the streets were bustling with other cars and pedestrians. The vehicle stayed within the maximum speed limit in the area of 40 kph (25 mph), its destination set with a smartphone app.

Takeshi Kimura, the Mobility and AI Laboratory engineer at Nissan, insists an automaker is more adept at integrating self-driving technology with the overall workings of a car — simply because it knows cars better.
'How the sensors must be adapted to the car's movements, or to monitor sensors and computers to ensure reliability and safety requires an understanding of the auto system overall,' he said during a recent demonstration that took reporters on a brief ride.
Nissan's technology, being tested on its Serena minivan, is still technically at the industry's Level Two because a person sits before a remote-control panel in a separate location outside the vehicle, in this case, at the automaker's headquarters, and is ready to step in if the technology fails.
Nissan also has a human sitting in the front passenger seat during the test rides, who can take over the driving, if needed. Unless there is a problem, the people in the remote control room and the passenger seat are doing nothing.

Nissan plans to have 20 such vehicles moving in the Yokohama area in the next couple of years, with the plan to reach Level Four, which means no human involvement even as backup, by 2029 or 2030.
Autonomous vehicles can serve a real need given the nation's shrinking population, including a shortage of drivers.
Other companies are working on the technology in Japan, including startups like Tier IV, which is pushing an open source collaboration on autonomous driving technology.
So far, Japan has approved the use of so-called Level Four autonomous vehicles in a rural area in Fukui Prefecture, but those look more like golf carts. A Level Four bus is scuttling around a limited area near Tokyo's Haneda airport. But its maximum speed is 12 kmph (7.5 mph). Nissan's autonomous vehicle is a real car, capable of all its mechanical workings and speed levels.
Toyota Motor Corp. recently showed its very own 'city' or living area for its workers and partnering startups, near Mount Fuji, being built especially to test various technology, including autonomous driving.
Progress has been cautious.
University of Tokyo Professor Takeo Igarashi, who specializes in computer and information technology, believes challenges remain because it's human nature to be more alarmed by accidents with driverless vehicles than regular crashes.
'In human driving, the driver takes responsibility. It's so clear. But nobody is driving so you don't know who will take responsibility,' Igarashi told The Associated Press.
'In Japan, the expectation for commercial services is very high. The customer expects perfect quality for any service — restaurants or drivers or anything. This kind of auto-driving is a service form a company, and everybody expects high quality and perfection. Even a small mistake is not acceptable.'

Nissan says its technology is safe. After all, a human can't be looking at the front, the back and all around at the same time. But the driverless car can, with all its sensors.
When a system failure happened during the recent demonstration, the car just came to a stop and all was well.
Phil Koopman, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, believes the autonomous vehicle industry is just getting started.
The main problem is what's known as 'edge cases,' those rare but dangerous situations that the machine has not yet been taught to respond to. Using autonomous fleets of a significant size for some time is needed for such edge cases to be learned, he said.
'We will see each city require special engineering efforts and the creation of a special remote support center. This will be a city-by-city deployment for many years,' said Koopman.
'There is no magic switch.'

Better EV Stock: Alphabet vs. Tesla (Hint: Robotaxis Are the Key)

Key Points The future of the auto industry lies in electric vehicles and ridesharing in autonomous vehicles. After many years in service, Waymo still can't point to a timeline of profitability. Tesla also faces challenges with its robotaxi offering, but it's well positioned, provided it can demonstrate safety and efficacy. These 10 stocks could mint the next wave of millionaires › Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG) (NASDAQ: GOOGL) isn't, strictly speaking, an electric vehicle (EV) company. However, its autonomous driving technology company, Waymo, is committed to only using EVs in its fleet. Funnily enough, it could be argued that Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) isn't really a pure EV company either. After all, most of its sky–high valuation is attributable to the potential of its robotaxis. However, the comparison of these two as EV companies is valid because the future of the auto industry is EVs, and ridesharing in autonomous vehicles will be a larger part of the industry in the future. But which company is better placed, and which is the better stock? Alphabet vs. Tesla It's entirely possible that Alphabet could decide to spin off Waymo, not least because it reportedly could be valued at more than $45 billion. Meanwhile, one of Tesla's biggest supporters, Cathie Wood's Ark Invest, ascribes 88% of Tesla's enterprise value (market cap plus net debt) to robotaxis in its investment case for the stock, producing an expected value of $2,600 for the stock in 2029. As I have previously discussed, the Ark targets should be taken with a pinch of salt, as its track record on Tesla hasn't been good. However, Ark's core argument is sound and points to Tesla being potentially a far more valuable stock than Waymo ever will be. Pathways to profitability The core argument is that Tesla's business model is scalable to profitability while Waymo's is far less so. The issue of Waymo's profitability arose in a recent CNBC interview with Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana, where she was asked whether Waymo is profitable. She replied, "We're proving out that it can be a profitable business." When asked when Waymo would be profitable, she replied, "not clear." It's also not clear if Alphabet/Waymo doesn't have an internal forecast for when it will hit profitability, or if Mawakana preferred not to divulge what the company considers an uncertain forecast. However, it's inconceivable that Alphabet is not internally crunching the numbers on this, and if it does decide to spin off Waymo, it's a question that needs to be answered. The point here is that a business that can't be profitable isn't worth anything, let alone $45 billion, so at some point, its management is going to have to set some timelines. Tesla and timelines Whereas investors need to hear more about timelines from Waymo, whose public self-driving ride-hailing service was launched in 2018, there's probably a need for fewer declared timelines from Tesla, or, rather, a need for more accurate ones. For example, in 2019, CEO Elon Musk famously told investors to expect a million self-driving vehicles on the road by mid-2020. In April 2022, he also stated that Tesla aspired to reach volume production of a dedicated robotaxi (Cybercab) in 2024 -- a timeline that has now been pushed back to 2026. These timeline estimates matter because plugging overly optimistic assumptions from them into valuation models can produce dramatically erroneous conclusions. Why Tesla is better positioned With all that said, Tesla has clear advantages over Waymo, provided it can demonstrate safety and reliability and achieve regulatory approvals. Its advantages include: Lower vehicle costs, with Musk aiming for a $30,000 price tag for a dedicated robotaxi, the Cybercab. Meanwhile, Wall Street analysts estimate Waymo's current vehicles cost more than $120,000. In addition, Tesla manufactures its own cars (Waymo does not), and existing Teslas can be converted into robotaxis using Tesla's as-yet-unreleased-to-the-public unsupervised full self-driving (FSD) software, giving Tesla a significant advantage in scaling the robotaxi business. Tesla's use of camera-centric technology is inherently less expensive than Waymo's combination of cameras, light detection and ranging (Lidar) lasers, and high-definition maps. Every Tesla car (robotaxi or not) on the road is effectively a data gatherer, with the data used to improve the AI that powers its AI models. As such, even though Waymo was first, Tesla has significantly more data than Waymo. Which is the better EV stock? Waymo may become profitable in the future, particularly if Lidar costs continue to drop. However, it's challenging to think that it will be a strong competitor to Tesla, provided Musk's company can master safe, unsupervised FSD using a camera-centric approach. That's a big "if" at this stage, but it becomes a smaller "if" as time goes by and Tesla expands its nascent robotaxi offering across new geographies. Tesla's next robotaxi launch is expected to be in Phoenix, as it plans to continue slowly building its robotaxi business. I think Tesla is the better EV stock when comparing Tesla and Alphabet. According to current forecasts, it is predicted to reach $4.31 in November, representing an 8.48% increase from its current levels. This minimal growth is attributed to continued revenue increases and expanding infrastructure in the fast-charging market, supported by government incentives for clean energy and electric vehicles. The bullish sentiment suggests that EVgo could still be a good investment opportunity, especially since the stock is trading below its predicted value. Analysts project that with the company's ongoing growth and ability to outperform market expectations, EVgo stock could gradually climb throughout the year. Potential risks could temper this growth, such as market volatility and increased competition. EVgo Stock Price Prediction for 2026 By 2026, EVgo stock is expected to be more volatile, with price predictions ranging between $2.58 and $4.17 per share. On average, the stock is forecast to trade at $3.37 during the year. The most bearish estimates suggest that EVgo could experience a major dip in late 2026, with December potentially seeing the stock down more than 25% below its current price. This volatility can be attributed to fluctuations in the broader EV market and changing consumer demand. While the fundamentals remain strong – especially with EVgo's ability to grow revenues year over year – the stock's performance in 2026 will depend on how well the company executes its expansion plans and whether it can continue securing strategic partnerships. EVgo Stock Price Prediction for 2030 Looking further ahead to 2030, EVgo stock is expected to experience substantial growth as the electric vehicle market matures. Optimistic projections suggest that EVgo could reach a stock price of $15 by 2030, driven by the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and the continued expansion of charging infrastructure nationwide. There are also more conservative estimates. In a worst-case scenario, EVgo stock could drop to below $1 in December 2030. On average, the stock is predicted to trade around $8 for the year, representing a 101% increase from today's price. Much of this growth depends on how well EVgo continues to capture market share and its ability to innovate within the fast-growing EV industry. Gran Turismo 7 Adds the Baddest R34 GT-R of Them All in July Update

If you have been following Gran Turismo 7's updates this year, you may have noticed something strange. Polyphony Digital suddenly seems to be enamored with crossovers. It's a somewhat depressing trend; over the last six months, the game has received the prior-gen Honda CR-V, Peugeot 2008, Mazda CX-30, and Toyota C-HR. As July winds to a close, it looks like the Nissan Qashqai is about to join their ranks. I can stomach it, though, because on the other end of the spectrum, we're also getting the baddest R34 Skyline GT-R of them all, in the Nismo Z-Tune. GT7's Update 1.61 will go live in the early hours of Thursday morning, and it'll bring those two additions, as well as the Honda N-One RS: a modern kei car with a six-speed manual and turbocharged three-cylinder making the maximum 63 horsepower that Japan allows for vehicles in that class. The little Honda feels like one of those cars you'd expect to discover and fall in love with in a Gran Turismo game. The Qashqai, on the other hand, is a cynical reminder that the automotive landscape that the series reflects today is quite different from the one it materialized in during the late '90s. I understand that argument that today's crossovers are the compact commuters of yesteryear, but they're not as fun to drive or tune, with their tall centers of gravity and powertrains engineered for efficiency at the cost of all else. The CR-V that joined the game this past spring had a CVT, for example, which locks it out of any meaningful upgrades. The Nissan is expected to behave similarly, as it's a hybrid. At least in GT's early days, you could take your starter used Civic and upgrade it until it was nipping at the heels of Lancer Evos and Supras, but that just isn't possible with these small SUVs. So that leaves us with the Nismo Z-Tune, which isn't a terrible consolation prize at all. This is the ultimate R34 GT-R, commemorating the 20th anniversary of Nissan's performance arm back in 2004. Here, Nismo bored and stroked the twin-turbo RB26 to produce a staggering 500 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque, and added a titanium exhaust, Sachs bolt-on dampers, and bespoke Brembo brakes, just to name a few performance-minded goodies. Only 20 Z-Tunes were built, both to represent the anniversary and because, by 2004, the R34 GT-R was already out of production. Gran Turismo has always been known for representing the Skyline GT-R lineage perhaps a little too well, but the Z-Tune has somehow never appeared in the franchise before, so this is a big moment. Elsewhere, you can expect the usual drip feed of races, a new track for the Sophy AI to compete on (High-Speed Ring), and new Scapes locales to snap photos. I say it every time I cover one of these updates, but you've got to wonder how many more of these Polyphony has stashed before it packs up GT7 and moves right onto GT8. Then again, perhaps that won't land until the PlayStation 6 does. Got tips? Send 'em to tips@
